the theatre of drottningholm – then and nowPerformance between the 18th and 21st centuries

By Willmar Sauter and David Wiles

The Theatre of Drottningholm – Then and Now tells the story of the drottningholm court theatre, from 1766 – the year it was built – to today’s performances presented during the annual summer festivals. the court theatre was rarely used after gustav iii’s death in 1792 until it was rediscovered in 1921, luckily for us, because this has meant that not only the auditorium but also the stage machinery, painted flats and backdrops have been almost perfectly preserved. this book provides a vivid picture of the drottningholm court theatre: the architecture, the many different activities which took place here during the gustavian era, and the use made of the theatre since its rediscovery to explore the nature of Baroque performance.

the censorship of British drama 1900–1968, Volume 4the sixties

by Steve Nicholson

the 1960s was a significant decade in social and political spheres in Britain, especially in the theatre. as certainties shifted and social divisions widened, a new generation of theatre makers arrived, ready to sweep away yesterday’s conventions and challenge the establishment. focusing on plays we know, plays we have forgotten, and plays that were silenced forever, this book reveals how a powerful elite exerted pressure over these new voices in an attempt to preserve the veneer of a polite, unquestioning society.

cecil hepworth and the rise of the British film industry 1899–1911by Simon Brown

this book offers an industrial, economic and aesthetic history of the early years of the British film industry from 1899-1911, through a case study of one of the most celebrated pioneer film makers, cecil hepworth. film production went from being a cottage industry to a multi-modal complex economic national system, and this book will present a picture of daily life in his film studio, and offer an analysis of his films including their content, production and marketing. it also charts the development of the British film industry, with an emphasis on the changing nature of exhibition and distribution, which caused a major crisis in the years 1908-1911, causing Britain to lose its status as a world leader in film making.

the appreciation of filmthe Postwar film society movement and film study

by Richard MacDonald

this book gives the first account of the volunteer-led film society movement in Britain and its contribution to post-WW2 film culture. it brings to life a lost history of alternative film exhibition and challenges the general assumption that the study of film began with university courses on ‘film studies’.

Voluntary associations dedicated to the screening of commercially unavailable films for subscribing members, known as film societies, expanded remarkably in the years following WW2 as people from all over the country gathered around improvised screening areas in village halls, schools and libraries. committed to promoting film as a form of art, film societies actively encouraged the informal study of film and articulated an ambition to be a vanguard movement.

three main points are covered: the history of film education in Britain, how film societies operated and the lasting impression they have made on film today. this book also addresses tensions that existed within the organisation of voluntary societies; many people wanted the societies to maintain vanguard ideals supporting artistic experimentation, but others wanted only to encourage membership and participation.

translating apollinaireby Clive Scott

guillaume apollinaire (1880–1918) is arguably the most significant french poet of World War i and of the years immediately preceding it. this book delves into apollinaire’s poetry and poetics as a way to explore the challenges and invitations it offers to the process of translation. in addition to apollinaire, clive scott draws from deleuze, Vertov, Barthes, and a number of other international linguists and theorists, to offer his experimental approach to translation—a multimedia approach with an emphasis on photographic collage that treats translation as a record of reading experience rather than the interpretation of a text. translation, scott argues, is an activity for all readers, not just a skill for specialists.

charles UrbanPioneering the non-fiction film in Britain and america, 1897–1925

by Luke McKernan

Charles Urban examines the career and legacy of the eponymous anglo-american film producer. Urban is a well-known and crucial figure in early film history for his development of kinemacolor, the world’s first successful natural color moving picture system. But Urban’s influence was even more far-reaching, according to luke mckernan. as mckernan reveals, Urban’s deep belief in film as an educational tool led him to become an innovator of wartime propaganda. Based on material found in Urban’s own papers and a deep knowledge of early film, luke mckernan has put together an accessible, exciting, and informative biography.

acting greek tragedyby Graham Ley

Acting Greek Tragedy explores the dynamics of physical interaction and the dramaturgical construction of scenes in ancient greek tragedy. ley argues that spatial distinctions between ancient and modern theatres are not significant, as core dramatic energy can be placed successfully in either context.

guiding commentary on selected passages from aeschylus, sophocles and Euripides illuminates the problems involved with performing monologue, dialogue, scenes requiring three actors, and scenes with properties. a companion website - actinggreektragedy.com - offers recorded illustrations of scenes from the Workshops.

What the book offers is a practical approach to the preparation of greek scripts for performance. the translations used have all been tested in workshops, with those of Euripides newly composed for this book.

marking timePerformance, archaeology and the city

by Mike Pearson

Marking Time: Performance, Archaeology and the City charts a genealogy of alternative practices of theatre-making since the 1960s in one particular city – cardiff. in a series of five itineraries, it visits fifty sites where significant events occurred, setting performances within local topographical and social contexts, and in relation to a specific architecture and polity. these sites – from disused factories to scenes of crime, from auditoria to film sets – it regards as landmarks in the conception of a history of performance. Marking Time uses performance and its places as a means to reflect on the character of the city itself – its history, its fabric and make-up, its cultural ecology and its changing nature. Weaving together personal recollections, dramatic scripts, archival records and documentary photographs, it suggests a new model for studying and for making performance …for other artistic practices…for other cities.

singing simpkin and other Bawdy Jigsmusical comedy on the shakespearean stage: scripts, music and context

by Roger Clegg and Lucie Skeaping

a popular crowd-pleaser in the late 16th and mid-17th century, the dramatic jig was a short, comic, bawdy musical-drama which included elements of dance, slapstick and disguise. With a cast of ageing cuckolds and young head-strong wives, knavish clowns, roaring soldiers and country bumpkins, jigs often followed as afterpieces at london’s playhouses, and were performed at fairs, in villages and in private houses. troublesome to the authorities, they drew the crowds by offering a lively antidote to more sober theatrical fare.

this performance edition presents for the first time nine examples of English dramatic jigs from the late sixteenth century through to the restoration; the scripts are re-united as far as possible with their original tunes. it gives a comprehensive history, discusses sources, plots, instrumentation and dancing, and offers practical information on staging jigs today.

mining in cornwall and devonmines and men

by Roger Burt with Raymond Burnley, Michael Gill and Alasdair Neill

Mining in Cornwall and Devon is an economic history of mines, mineral ownership, and mine management in the south West of England.

the work brings together material from a variety of hard-to-find sources on the thousands of mines that operated in cornwall and devon from the late 1790s to the present day. it presents information on what they produced and when they produced it; who the owners and managers were and how many men, women and children were employed. for the mine owners, managers and engineers, it also offers a guide to their careers outside of the south West, in other mining districts across Britain and the world, and is an invaluable guide for family historians and those interested in biographical history.

the printed book provides a guide to the sources, their interpretation and how they illustrate the long-term development and decline of the industry. the book contains 15 illustrations. the composite mine-by-mine tables are presented on an interactive cd included free with the book.

cornish studies 21Edited by Philip Payton

the ‘coming of age’ edition of this acclaimed paperback series discusses contemporary cornish studies, as well the cornish language, medieval and early modern cornwall, the duchy of cornwall, the establishment of the cornish diocese, cornish folklore, cornish wrestling and the great Emigration, and the writers arthur Quiller-couch, daphne du maurier, and Jack clemo, together with an overview of cornish nationalism and a postscript on John Betjeman and cornwall.

‘the twenty-first issue of Cornish Studies, the last under the editorship of Philip Payton, is a testament to the directions in which he has taken the series during twenty years at the helm. this ‘coming of age’ edition brings together essays by scholars from australia, ireland and italy as well as the Uk and continues Philip Payton’s on-going concern with cornwall’s place in an international context. the contributions here speak to the genuinely interdisciplinary identity of a series which remains the definitive site for scholarship and debate about cornish history, culture, politics and identities’.

Water in the citythe aqueducts and Underground Passages of Exeter

by Mark Stoyle

the city of Exeter was one of the great provincial capitals of late medieval and early modern England, possessing a range of civic amenities fully commensurate with its size and importance. among the most impressive of these was its highly sophisticated system of public water supply, including a unique network of underground passages. most of these ancient passages still survive today.

Water in the City provides a richly illustrated history of Exeter’s famous underground passages—and of Exeter’s system of public water supply during the medieval and early modern periods. mark stoyle shows how and why the passages and aqueducts were originally built, considers the technologies that were used in their construction, explains how they were funded and maintained, and reveals the various ways in which the water fountains were used and abused by the townsfolk.
