Walk through our halls of learning

The oldest University in Sri Lanka, the Universityof Colombo is a sprawling complex located in theheart of the capital city of Colombo. In keepingwith its motto “Buddhi Sarvathra Bhrajate”,Sanskrit for “Wisdom Enlightens”, the Universityof Colombo strives to maintain academicexcellence in all areas of study. The University ofColombo has 7 Faculties with 43 AcademicDepartments, a Campus, a School, 6 Institutes andseveral Centres and Units. Many undergraduateand postgraduate study courses in the fields ofArts, Science, Medicine, Management, Finance,Law, Education, IT, Aesthetic Studies. MolecularBiology etc are conducted by the University. TheUniversity also offers several other services, suchas library services, career guidance, and servicesfor differently-­‐abled students. Today, theUniversity of Colombo with a proud history ofover 115 years continues in its endeavour to meetthe challenge of maintaining its position as the“Capital University, Modern and International inOutlook and Character”. The location of theUniversity affords the student population all theadvantages of a “metropolitan university” in easyaccess to international information/resourcecentres, libraries, theatres, sports complexes etc.

In the present knowledge era and with the rapid phase of technological advancement onecannot escape the globalization now embracing all aspects of our lives. The University ofColombo is no different to other universities worldwide. The University of Colombo with itsVision & Mission has prioritized innovation, technology & Knowledge dissemination for nationaldevelopment but not forgetting the globe. Modern technological advances in communicationhad created a virtual space for information sharing, collaboration, debate and intellectualdiscourse.

Careful use and management of all electronic communication tools can have tremendous impacton our virtual space, quality of our teaching – mode of delivery, research and our intellectualdiscourse. Having realized vast opportunities the University has, rapid changes have taken placetowards expanding further and higher education through blended mode of delivery not onlylocally but also globally. Networking of the University M-­‐based learning virtual campus is one toname.

Faculty of Medicine

The Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo, Sri Lanka, established in 1870 and consideredthe undisputed matriarch of medical education in Sri Lanka has been a leader in medicaltraining and research not only in this country but also in Asia. Our teaching faculty in Colombois comprised of some of the most accomplished, ambitious and dedicated scientists andmedical professionals in Asia. Students always strive to grow and evolve and our faculty doesprovide them an innovative learning environment that imparts the refined skills of how to becompassionate and caring.

This faculty is in the forefront of medical education and has central to its mission, a curriculumthat melds the study of basic science, pathophysiology and mechanisms of disease and theclinical practice of medicine into a cohesive programme of learning. The vibrant curricularactivities and responsibilities spread beyond those of a traditional medical school. It includesthe acquisition of proper professional communication skills and the practice of acquiredclinical skills in the community. The faculty is associated with the National Hospital, Colombo,Sri Lanka, the largest teaching hospital in the country.

Of all the marvelous aspects of the Colombo experience, none is more vital or valuable to usthan the diverse and devoted students who contribute so much to one another, to the life inthe faculty and to the future of health care in this country.

The PGIM is the only institute in Sri Lanka that is responsiblefor the specialist training of Medical doctors. It is a nationalinstitute that is attached to the University of Colombo. It isinternationally recognised and several of its trainingprogrammes have 'equivalence' recognition by the RoyalColleges of the UK.

The PGIM works in close collaboration with the Ministry of Higher Education, the Ministry ofHealth, Faculties of Medicine of the Universities and Professional Colleges. The PGIM has adistinguished panel of postgraduate trainers. The highest educational standards aremaintained for postgraduate training. Our postgraduate training is on par with the best in theworld, and we have close training links with the Royal College of Physicians, UK, the RoyalAustralasian College of Physicians, and academic colleges in many other countries.

Many overseas postgraduate trainees have followed our courses, and are postgraduates havegained distinction the world over.

Institute of Indigenous Medicine

The Faculty of Science was formed with the advent of the University College in Colombo in 1913.Presently the Faculty of Science has about 1529 undergraduate students and 371 postgraduatestudents, 102 academic staff and 104 other staff.

The Faculty consists of seven Departments of study – Chemistry, Mathematics, Nuclear Science,Physics, Plant Sciences, Statistics and Zoology, and conducts courses leading to the B.Sc. generaldegree (03 years duration) and B.Sc. special degree (04 years duration). A comprehensive rangeof subject combinations are available for the general degree while special degree programsallow students to specialize in some of those subjects. The Faculty together with the School ofComputing of the University also offers several joint special degree programs. The Faculty alsoconducts graduate programs leading to the Master of Science degree and postgraduatediplomas. The Faculty also plays a very active role in research and there are ma ny researchstudents reading for Ph.D. and M.Phil degrees. Through the research programs the Faculty andthe Departments have established strong links with both Sri Lankan and foreign researchorganizations.

The members of the Faculty also play a prominent role in national development. Severalmembers act as resource persons, consultants and board members in many government and

Institute of Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, andBiotechnologyThe IBMBB is a postgraduate training institute ofthe University of Colombo. We provide coursesaimed at focused training in current areas ofmolecular life sciences relevant to thedevelopment of Sri Lanka and also to encourageyoung graduates to proceed for further advancedstudies leading to PhD.

Institute of Agro-­‐technology and Rural Science

A shining example of true technology transfer, this Institute created a new understanding to theconcept of University-­‐Community extension systems. Located in the south of the country, theinstitute started to produce tissue cultured (TC) banana plants and distribute them among thefarmers in Hambantota and nearby by districts in 1998. At present this TC banana plants productionunit fulfills the demands of farmers not only in hambantota and nearby districts but the demands offarmers throughout country. The well-­‐organized extension programmes conducted by the institutein connection with TC banana plants production caters the essential technical know-­‐how to farmercommunity. There are two tissue culture laboratories and produce 15,000 plants per month at itsmaximum capacity. Laboratories are totally managed by local women, giving job opportunities tothem close to home.

Courses:e-diploma in Agro-technologye-degree in Agro-Technology

The Bachelor of AgroTechnology is the one and onlyonline distance learning degree programme available inSri Lanka which facilitates the farmer community toobtain higher education qualifications differing fromconventional university education system. There is alsoa Diploma course designed to introduce knowledgebased agriculture to the rural farming community.

The Institute also provides many other consultancyservices and workshops to promote agro-­‐technology.

The UCSC is the premier centre for higher learning in computertechnology.

The UCSC is fully equipped with nine student laboratories, two multimedia laboratories, two research laboratories, a campus wide fibrenetwork, with the entire UCSC building complex fully wired forInternet access. UCSC has a state of the art network-­‐operating centre.The library is well equipped with Books, Journals, CDs and providesInternet access to e-­‐journals.

The UCSC is involved in many areas of research.

The Faculty of Law of the University ofColombo, which is the only Faculty of Law inthe entire University system of this country,traces its origin to the Department of Law inthe Faculty of Arts of the then University of Ceylonestablished under the Ceylon University Ordinance No. 20of 1942. The Department of Law was established in July1947 under the Faculty of Arts. The Faculty of law hasnow three departments: commercial law, private andcomparative law, and public and international Law.

The Sri Lanka Journal ofInternational Law is a refereedjournal published annually by theFaculty of Law of the University ofColombo, Sri Lanka.

The Journal is listed in the periodicalindexes of Ulrich and Lex Opus.

The Faculty of Arts is the largest in the University of Colombo interms of student enrolment. The faculty has nine academicDepartments and several teaching Units offering courses in thefield of Social Sciences. Apart from undergraduate BA courses,several Departments offer courses for Diploma, Masters and Ph.Ddegrees. Many students who successfully complete Special BADegrees, eventually register for postgraduate degree programsoffered by the Faculty.

The Faculty of Arts has responded in variousways to the challengesand problems of higher education and employment. Theintroduction of the Course Unit System in 1998 was a major steptowards offering greater flexibility to students in termsof selectionof courses, their duration, new methods of teaching, learning andevaluation. The establishment of a Student Computer Unit andComputer TeachingUnitwithin theFacultyhasenabled students tobecome computer literate -­‐ an essential skill in the economic andacademic climate of today -­‐-­‐ within a short period of time. Manystudents specializing in subjects such as geography, economics andsociology also take computer applications as a regular course unit.

The Faculty of Education, University of Colombo performs adistinctive function in the training of graduates as professionals ineducation and in the initiation of undergraduate to the field ofEducation. The Faculty conducts diploma, graduate and postgraduate training programs which have becomethe national standard for teacher training. The Faculty has close links with the Ministry ofEducation.

Sri Palee Campus

TheWestern Campus of theUniversity of Colombo is located inthe Kalutara district atWewala, Horana. It has 2 Faculties: theFaculty of Performing Arts and the Faculty of Mass Media.Under the Faculty of Performing Arts there is only onedepartment of study which is the department of PerformingArts in which Music, Dancing, Drama and Theatre, ScreenStudies and Art and Design are taught as main subjects. Underthe faculty of Mass Media three departments were originallygazetted i.e. theDepartmentofMassMedia, theDepartmentofLanguages and the Department of Information Technology.
