PublicHikes:Docent-ledinterpretivepublichikesbeganinNovemberandcontinuedthroughJune2015foratotalofsevenpublichikingdaysinthisfiscalyear.Onehikeontheschedulewascancelledduetorain.Overall,approximatelythreehundred(300)hikersparticipatedinthepublichikes.DocentActivities:Throughoutthe2014-15year,docentsparticipatedinanumberofactivitiestotaling993userdays,includingeight(8)WalkingEcologylectures,theLakeCachumaChristmasBirdCount,eight(8)docent-traininglectures,eight(8)publichikesandthree(3)privatehikeforretreatsofvariousorganizations.Additionally,docentsworkedinthenativeplantnursery,plantednativeplantsandweededaroundthefieldstation,maintainedhikingtrails,andcompletedweeklybirdcounts.TheSedgwickReservePhenologyProject,apartofthelargerCaliforniaPhenologyProject,isnowinits4thyear.Eleven(11)dedicatedSedgwickdocents/phenologistsrecordeddataalonganestablishedphenologytrail,consistingof24plantsof6differentspecies:ValleyOak,CaliforniaLiveOak,CaliforniaBuckwheat,BlueElderberry,CoyotebrushandToyon.Phenologistsuserdaystotaledover402forthefiscalyear.Inthefallof2014,five(5)docentscompletedtheCaliforniaNaturalistcertificationprogramofferedthroughtheSantaBarbaraBotanicGarden.TheirCapstoneprojectsenhancenativeplantknowledgeandrestorationeffortsatSedgwickreserve,wildflowersofthereserve,andaslideshowpresentationofthereservepond’sdenizensandcattaileradicationactivities.Thevalleyoakrestorationprojectcontinuedinthefiscalyear.DocentOakievolunteerswateredtheseedlingsinthefieldeverytwoweeksforatotalofninety-six(96)userdays.Fourteen(14)plantingsthatfailedtosurvivewerereplacedinthespringquarter.Thebirdingteamconductedweeklycountstotaling52fortheyear.STEWARDSHIPForthefourthyearinarow,therewasbelowaveragerainfallattheReserve.Theseasonalrainfalltotalwas9.25inches,recordedbytheDRIweatherstationlocatedIontheridgenorth-westoftheTiptonMeetingHouse.MeanannualrainfallfortheSantaYnezValleyis15.81inches.TheReserve’saquiferwasmeasuredbytheUSGSinOctober2014tobe31feetbelowsurfaceandinMarch2015tobe32feetbelowsurface.Bycomparison,inwetyearstheaquiferreachesthesurface,butaverages20feetbelowsurface.TheUSGShasbeensamplingtheaquifersince1950(65years).Variousprojectswerecompletedthisfiscalyear:Depredationeffortsyielded26feralpigsusingabaitedtrap(carriedoutbyreservestaffand1volunteer).BoyScouttroop#4completedtheirrequiredservicehoursatthereservebyplantingdozensofnativeplantsgrowninthereserve’snativeplantnurseryalongthenewhedgerowborderingthefarm.Farmandgrazingleaseswerediscontinueduntilthedroughtisover.Weedmanagement:Tumbleweedsinthefarmwerediskedunderwiththenewdiskingattachmentonthetractor.Nogoatgrassfoundgrowingatthereserve.Steward,ValentinNavarroremovedweedsmanuallyalongalltheroadsidesandthepond.ThereisasignificantincreaseinthenumberofBlueoaks(Quercasdouglisai)andValleyoaks(Quercaslobata)dyinginplaceandfallingoverinwindevents.InFall2014,twolargeValleyOaksfell-oneinWindmillCanyonandoneneartheDirector’sresidence.DEVELOPMENTThefundraisingyearatSedgwickbeganonahighnoteinJulywiththe5thAnnualBarnDance,afriend-raisingcelebrationthatwasbegunin2010tocommemoratethecompletionoftheBarnrestorationandthedonorwhomadeitpossible.Thisyear,red"ranch"bandanasweregiventoparticipantsandrecordnumbersofguestsweretreatedtotri-tipandsquaredancingonahotsummernight.Januarywasmarkedbytheagreementwithlong-timeSedgwickfriends,JudyandJackStapelmanntogiftasecondresidencetotheReserve,asimilarstructuretothemanager'spre-fabhousethatwasgiftedin2009.Thishousewillbesituatednexttothemanager'shouseandwillprovidearesidenceforthereservesteward.

Inanefforttomaximizedevelopmentopportunitiesandcollaborateeffectivelyamongenvironmentalandecologicalscienceunitsoncampus,SedgwickdonorsandfriendswereinvitedtoaneventinFebruaryattheBrenSchoolthathighlightedfireinaStrategicEnvironmentalResearchInitiative(SERI).TheeveningincludedanartinstallationthatwasconstructedattheCenterforEnvironmentalCommunicationandEducation(CECE)anddinnerattheBrenSchool.ThiswasthefirstinwhatishopedwillbeacontinuingefforttobuildondonorinterestsintheenvironmentthatwillbenefitthesedepartmentsandunitsincludingtheNaturalReserveSystem.SedgwickstaffparticipatedinaUCNRSsystem-wideefforttoidentifyfundingprioritiesforthenextfiveyears,inpreparationforaUCNRS$50millionfundraisingcampaignthatwillbeofficiallylaunchedin2016.KeySedgwickdonorshavebeentargetedtoparticipateincampaignleadership,butallgiftstothecampaignwillbecreditedtoindividualreservesthatdonorswishtosupport.WorkonthebuildingprojectthatencompassestherenovationoftheSedgwickReserveRanchHousebeganinMarch.ABuildingCommitteewasassembledthatincludesSedgwickandNRSmanagement,docents,facultyfamiliarwiththereserveandtheUCSBNRSdevelopmentofficer.Thelatterischargedwithkeepingthedonoruptodateonprogressrelatingtoestablishedmilestonesandanagreeduponpaymentschedule.Itisanticipatedthattherenovationwillbecompletedinthefallof2016.ReservepersonnelalsoparticipatedineventstohighlighttheecologicalandenvironmentalsciencesatUCSB(includingtheNRS).TheseeventsincludedEarthDaySantaBarbaraandUCSB'sAll-GauchoWeekend,bothheldinApril.Exhibitsfocusedonthe50thanniversaryoftheNaturalReserveSystemandeducatingnewaudiencesabouttheNRS.InMay,anevent,DarkSkiesandBrightStarsatSedgwickReserve,washeldtoinformandeducateneighborsandSYVresidentsaboutthecampaigntohavethereservedesignatedasaDarkSkiesPreserve,aworldwideinitiative.About80peoplewereenthralledtohearObservatorydonorWayneRosingtalkabouthisworkwithLasCumbresGlobalObservatoryandatSedgwick.AnannualfundraisingsolicitationwasemailedintotheConstantContactmailinglistinDecember,andhardcopysolicitationsweremailedtokeydonors.Thiseffort,alongwithvariousdonationsthroughoutFY15elicitedatotalof$409,589incontributedfunds.FACILITIESIn2014-15,facilityrentalsgenerated$8,296.19ininvoices,adecreaseof$2,724.51fromthepreviousfiscalyear.Annualmaintenanceonallreservevehicleswascompleted.Otherfacilityprojectsincluded:Finalworkonthemaintenancebarnwascompletedincludingpaintingandelectricalhook-up.Anawningwasbuiltoverthewesternwindowstoshieldthebuildingfromafternoonsunandstewardsmovedcabinetryintothespace.Thenativeplantnurserywasrelocatedinanareaadjacenttothehistoricbarn.Gateswereinstalledandrodent-prooffencesandawatertie-inwerecompleted.Theelectricalupgrade,includingrelocationofthemainelectricalpanelsandsolarinverterstoasinglesiteadjacenttotheparkingarea,wascompleted.Installationofanewwatermaintofieldstationbuildingswascompleted,andafirehydrantwasinstalledattheranchhouse.Plumbinginthestudioapartmenthadtoberedone,astheoldpipesinthebuildingcouldnotwithstandthepressureofwatercominginnewlinesfromWoodstock.InJuly,2014watertoallSedgwickfacilitiesbecamepotable.AnagreementwiththeWoodstockHomeOwnersAssociationprovidesmeteredwatertotheReservebutcannotbeusedforlandscapingorirrigation.Waterisstillbeingpumpedfromthesharedagwelltofillthefieldstationcistern,keepthepondfullandforoutdoorlandscapingwater.Roadprojectswerecompletedincludingresealingthepavedroad,gradingofmainentranceroad,additionofroadbasetoadesignatedparkingarea,gradingwestofthestudiotoimprovedrainageandimprovementoftheroadthatconnectsthebarn,maintenanceshopandresidentialaccessareas.ADMINISTRATIONInthefiscalyear,KateMcCurdyreachedher9thanniversaryasdirectorofthereserve.Assistedbytwopart-time(40%time)outreachcoordinators,thedirectormanagedmultiplereserveusersincludingresearchers(297usersand2453userdays)universitylevelclasses(351usersand559userdays);K-12groups(396usersand421userdays);anddocents,volunteers,NGOgroups,andotherpublicusers(2464usersand2891userdays).Usersin2014-15totaled3,543comparedto2013-14totalusers3,668,adecreaseof125users.
