Student Question:

On my degree adit, it says I need 32-34 upper division bio elective units to graduate. I got two D's in upper division bio electives spring quarter (Spring 2019). On the degree audit, it also says that D's are not applicable unless petitioned. Is there any way I can petition these two D grades to receive credit for upper division electives so I can graduate sooner rather than later? Lemme know whatchu think

(shown in VAC):

Hello Connor,

Petitions requesting D grades apply toward the major are rarely approved and are only considered under extenuating circumstances (i.e. personal, medical issues, etc.) with supporting documentation. If you are experiencing an extenuating circumstance that would prevent you from taking coursework in FA19 to complete your major requirements with a C- or better, and you opt to petition to have the D grades considered for major credit, you would need to submit a completed petition form for each course, a personal statement explaining your situation, and supporting documentation (i.e. doctor's note, medical documentation, etc.) to the biology advising front desk located in 1128 Pacific Hall. Please note that petitions can take up to 5 weeks to process and they are not guaranteed.

If you have any further questions, please let us know.

Thank you-

Hi Connor,

We are following up with you for clarification about the petitions you submitted to apply 2 "D" grades (BIMM 100 and BIPN 102- WI19) toward your General Biology major requirements.

In the end of the statement you submitted, you write that "if both Molecular Biology and Human Physiology were considered passing,(you) would have

28/32 units completed and would need a mere 4 units more in Fall to complete (your) degree." Upon reviewing your Academic History and degree audit, it appears that you are currently enrolled in BICD 140 and BIMM 134 (S219) and BIEB 146, BIMM 116, and ETHN 178 (FA19). Note, if you plan to remain enrolled in one or both FA19 biology courses, you would not have to submit a petition to apply D grades toward your major. More specifically, if you complete your S219 courses (BICD 140 and BIMM 134) and one UD Biology elective FA19 (BIEB 146 or BIMM 116) with a C- or better, all requirements for the General Biology major will be satisfied.

Please provide clarification regarding the following questions:

• How are your S219 courses going? Do you feel that you will be able to complete both BICD 140 and BIMM 134 with a C- or better?

• Are you planning to enroll full-time (12 or more units) FA19? It appears that you need to remain enrolled in ETHN 178 (FA19) to satisfy the DEI requirement for the university.

• OR are you hoping to enroll part-time (10 units or less) with ETHN 178 and one UD Biology elective, so that you can satisfy remaining requirements and continue to work full-time at your job (as you noted in your statement)?

• OR Are you hoping that your petitions will be approved so that one or both D grades (BIMM 100/BIPN 102) will satisfy the rest of your Biology major requirements, then you could drop BIEB 146 and BIMM 116, and then only enroll in ETHN 178 (FA19) for graduation?

Once you provide us with the information above, we can continue with the next steps in the petition process.

If you have any questions, please let us know. We are also available for walk-in advising in Pacific Hall 1128. Our schedule can be found on the Biology website

class load as much as possible as I'm transitioning from a full time student to a full time employee at an off campus cancer research lab. In an ideal situation, both petitioned D's would count as upper division elective credit as well as passing either Immunology or Bio of Cancer leaving me with the DEI class I'm enrolled in as my only class for Fall 2019. Currently, I am in Immunology (BICD 140) and Biology of Cancer (BIMM134) over Summer II 2019. As of right now I'm most likely going to pass Immunology and withdrawal from BIMM 134 (depending on the midterm grade/if the exam scores are released before Fri 8/23). If the petitions are rejected, I would be forced to take two more upper division elective classes plus a DEl course in Fall 2019 and be a full time student (12 units) instead of a full time employee. This would cause me to loose a job opportunity as the offer is time dependent. For Fall 2019, I am hoping that the DEI course I'm currently enrolled in is the only course I have to take. I loaded up with classes all summer 2019 in hopes of having a light Fall 2019 course load so I can work full time and finish up my degree simultaneously. In order to do so, the petitioned D's would have to be approved and count as upper division elective units. Thanks for all your help. If you have any questions or concerns don't hesitate to reach out. Best, Connor Kelleher

(shown in VAC):

Hi Connor,

Thank you for following up with us about the information we requested. We will continue to process your petition with the information you provided. Please note that the Biology faculty committee that will review your petitions does not meet until Fall quarter starts. Therefore, it is highly likely that your petition and petition materials will be reviewed the first week of October (at the earliest). Because of this, we recommend that you stay enrolled in and plan to attend both BIEB 146 and BIMM 116 (FA19) in case your petitions are not reviewed or approved within the first few weeks of the quarter. If your petitions to apply 2 "D" grades (BIMM 100 and BIPN 102) toward your major are approved at the beginning of FA19, you complete BICD 140 and/or BIMM 134 (S219) with a C- or better, then you would want to drop BIEB 146 and BIMM 116 by Friday of Week 4 to avoid receiving a W on your academic record.

Please note that if you plan to drop BIMM 134 (S219), the deadline to drop the course with a W on your record is today, August 23rd. If you drop BIMM 134 and your petitions to apply 2 "D" grades toward your major are denied, you will need to complete both BIMM 116 and BIEB 146 (FA19) with a C- or better to satisfy Biology major requirements.

If you have any other questions, please let us know.

Thank you.

Student Question: how many upper division bio electives do i need to take this fall quarter in order to graduate? currently im signed up for 2 classes , but i think all i need is 1. that that correct and can i drop one of those classes to satisfy my upper division bio elective units?

(shown in VAC):

Hello Connor,

You will only need to complete one of the biology courses you are enrolled in FA19 (BIEB 146 or BIMM 116) with a letter grade of C- or better in order to satisfy General Biology major requirements. If you plan to drop one of the biology courses, you should do so as soon as possible and remember that the drop without a W deadline is Friday Week 4. If you drop one of your biology courses you will only be enrolled in 8 units so please consider if you need full time status (12+ units) for things like financial aid, on-campus housing, etc. If you do not need full time and are eligible, you should consider applying for part time status as soon as possible but before the deadline (Friday, Week 2). If FA19 will be your final quarter at UCSD, you will also need to apply to graduate.

If you have further questions regarding the major, please let us know.

Thank you-
