Two roads to raising achievement

‘Towing’ / spoon-feeding

‘Building learning power’

Both are kinds of ‘good practice’But there are different costs and benefits

Independent schools…

Get good results, say the inspectors…

‘Spoonfeeding works, but it works at theexpense of something British schools havealways been good at: turning out youngpeople able to be inventive, creative,independent-minded, even awkward’Tony Hubbard, ISI report

What Emily worries about…

‘I guess I could call myself smart. I mean Ican usually get good grades. Sometimes Iworry though that I’m not equipped toachieve what I want, that I’m just a taperecorder repeating back what I’ve heard. Iworry that once I’m out of school andpeople don’t keep handing me informationwith questions…I’ll be lost.– Emily, aged 15, GCSE student

They haven’t ‘learned how tolearn’ – but they should have…

‘For young Britons in the 21st centuryteaching needs to serve three functions: thetransmission of knowledge for a worldbuilt on information, the broadening ofhorizons in a country still scarred bydisadvantage, and learning how to learnin preparation for a lifetime of change.’– David Miliband, January 2003

The changing world

WorkRelationshipsGeographyBelongingIdentity

Complex, uncertain and demanding…

The wider picture

‘In times of change, learners will inherit the earth, while the learned will find themselves beautifullyequipped to deal with a world that no longerexists’ Eric Hoffer

‘Since we cannot know what knowledge will beneeded in the future it is senseless to try to teachit in advance. Instead our job must be to try toturn out young people who love learning so much, and who learn so well, that they will be able tolearn whatever needs to be learnt’ John Holt

So building students’ learning power issocially relevant, but does it deliver theresults?

‘For nearly 20 years it has been known that students withmore elaborated conceptions of learning perform better inpublic examinations at age 16’‘The more students are supported as autonomous learners, the higher their school performance’‘Learning about learning has more impact than studyskills’‘When teachers learn more about learning, theeffectiveness if a school improves and increasedperformance follows’Chris Watkins, National School Improvement Network

Page 9: University of Bristol - Henry Lieblingesd.escalate.ac.uk/downloads/1736.pdf · ‘In times of change, learners will inherit the earth, while the learned will find themselves beautifully

So what are good learners (as opposedto successful students) like?

What do they do?What do they enjoy? How do they feel?

Page 10: University of Bristol - Henry Lieblingesd.escalate.ac.uk/downloads/1736.pdf · ‘In times of change, learners will inherit the earth, while the learned will find themselves beautifully

What makes an effective learner?

Techniques – mind maps, study skillsConditions – knowing when and howHabits of mind – dispositionsPleasures – values and interests

These can all be cultivated, and developover different time scales…

Page 11: University of Bristol - Henry Lieblingesd.escalate.ac.uk/downloads/1736.pdf · ‘In times of change, learners will inherit the earth, while the learned will find themselves beautifully

One way of thinking about what‘learning power’ consists of

Resilience – locking on to learningResourcefulness – knowing what to dowhen you don’t know what to doReflection – strategies and self-awarenessRelationships – learning alone and withothers

Page 12: University of Bristol - Henry Lieblingesd.escalate.ac.uk/downloads/1736.pdf · ‘In times of change, learners will inherit the earth, while the learned will find themselves beautifully

For example…

Determination

Questioning

Metalearning

Collaboration

Absorption

Reverie

Revising

Empathy

Page 13: University of Bristol - Henry Lieblingesd.escalate.ac.uk/downloads/1736.pdf · ‘In times of change, learners will inherit the earth, while the learned will find themselves beautifully

Resilience: stickability andtenacity

* Tolerating confusion and frustration* Being patient – ‘negative capability’* Enjoying challenge* Being curious - asking questions* Getting rapt* Minimising distraction

Page 14: University of Bristol - Henry Lieblingesd.escalate.ac.uk/downloads/1736.pdf · ‘In times of change, learners will inherit the earth, while the learned will find themselves beautifully

Resourcefulness: learning indifferent ways

Getting informed – data, details andpatternsExperimenting – messing aboutImagination – visualisation, mentalrehearsal, metaphorIntuition – hunches, inklings, glimmeringsHard thinking – analysis, logic, criticismScavenging and capitalising

Page 15: University of Bristol - Henry Lieblingesd.escalate.ac.uk/downloads/1736.pdf · ‘In times of change, learners will inherit the earth, while the learned will find themselves beautifully

Reflection: planning andadapting

Taking stock – ‘is it working?’Planning – being methodicalOpportunismKnowing yourself as a learnerUsing the rhythms of ‘hard’ and ‘soft’– Hunch breaks– Walks– Holidays

Page 16: University of Bristol - Henry Lieblingesd.escalate.ac.uk/downloads/1736.pdf · ‘In times of change, learners will inherit the earth, while the learned will find themselves beautifully

Relationships: making the mostof other people

Standing your groundSupports and sounding boardsCollaboration – teams are more than thesum of their partsOther people’s shoes - empathyModelsCritics and commentators

Page 17: University of Bristol - Henry Lieblingesd.escalate.ac.uk/downloads/1736.pdf · ‘In times of change, learners will inherit the earth, while the learned will find themselves beautifully

Building students’ learningpower:core principles

Split screen thinking and planningStretching learning muscles all the time‘Gentle pressure relentlessly applied’– small and sustained– don’t be put off by initial resistance

Sharing some control for what, how where andwhen: you have to trustTransparency of intentions and criteriaEverything is an experiment: we are learning tooStudents as knowledge-creators about learning

Page 18: University of Bristol - Henry Lieblingesd.escalate.ac.uk/downloads/1736.pdf · ‘In times of change, learners will inherit the earth, while the learned will find themselves beautifully

The BLP climate involves morethan teaching techniques

The words and the language we use givepowerful messages…

– ‘learning’, not ‘work’ language

– ‘effort’, not ‘ability’ language

– ‘could be’, not ‘is’ language

Page 19: University of Bristol - Henry Lieblingesd.escalate.ac.uk/downloads/1736.pdf · ‘In times of change, learners will inherit the earth, while the learned will find themselves beautifully

It also involves the values wemodel…

Daring not to knowThinking aloud about teaching‘Thinking like a scientist’ etcShow your work in progressHave a learning project

Page 20: University of Bristol - Henry Lieblingesd.escalate.ac.uk/downloads/1736.pdf · ‘In times of change, learners will inherit the earth, while the learned will find themselves beautifully

And a BLP culture talks explicitly aboutlearning power all the time

Explaining –– Talk about Building Learning Power– Discuss when/how students get their ideas– Make time, during ‘meaty learning’, for

reflection on process– Learning logs– Things in the news

Page 21: University of Bristol - Henry Lieblingesd.escalate.ac.uk/downloads/1736.pdf · ‘In times of change, learners will inherit the earth, while the learned will find themselves beautifully

And what about…

Page 22: University of Bristol - Henry Lieblingesd.escalate.ac.uk/downloads/1736.pdf · ‘In times of change, learners will inherit the earth, while the learned will find themselves beautifully

This is just the beginning…

We need models of teaching as LP coaching thatare– Coherent rather than bitty– Comprehensive rather than partial– Credible rather than commercial– Cultural rather than technical– Cumulative rather than static– Community rather than classroom-only– For real-life and not just in school

Page 23: University of Bristol - Henry Lieblingesd.escalate.ac.uk/downloads/1736.pdf · ‘In times of change, learners will inherit the earth, while the learned will find themselves beautifully

And the sting in the tail…

Those enjoyable, challenging experiences…– Do they last?– Do they strengthen?– Do they spread?– Do they deepen?

– Happy campers and wishful thinking won’t do

– What makes for transfer: the $64000 question
