Feeling like you are reakingou, overwhelmed, homesick, down, lonely and abandoned, orsimilar, are normal eelings hayou migh experience duringyour firs weeks a UH. Thegood hing o know is ha heseeelings are all 100% normal. We all end o hink we are heonly ones eeling his way, buhaving hese eelings is acuallyvery common. Remember, youare no alone!

Tip 1: Meet new peopleand make new riendsYou may no know anyonein your Hall. Your RA will beineresed in how you are doingand will be riendly and helpul.People cope differenly wih

emoions, experiences and newsiuaions. Some people may ryoo hard. They seem loud andconfiden and may ask you loso quesions or ell you personalhings abou hemselves oosoon. Ohers cope wih shynessby hiding away rom ohers inheir room. I you wan someoneo say Hello, leave your dooropen.

Spend some ime in hecommon areas, such as hekichen and common room, andalk o ohers. Anoher goodway o do his is o invie oherso ea wih you in he diningroom, or join ohers i you areinvied.

Geting o know oher peopleon your floor is a grea way osar geting over any iniialeelings o being overwhelmedand becoming more involvedwih Hall lie will speed up youradjusmen ime.

Wha is an IndependenLearner? An independen learner isa suden who has akenresponsibiliy or his or herlearning experience. This ismuch more han jus atendinglecures. I means commitingo doing all assigned readings, seeking ou addiional supporand inormaion and being anacive paricipan in he learning

experience. And you have odo all o his wihou someoneelse elling you ha you haveo do i!

Wha does being anIndependen Learnerlook like?As an independen learner youll

do he ollowing aciviies (anda ew more as well):

    1. Have a weekly lecure andsudy plan in your diary, soyou are never lae.

    2. Ideniy assignmens andessays and heir due daesand pu hese on a wallplanner and in your diary

as soon as you can (you cannormally ge your hands onboh o hese ools ree-o-charge rom he SudenUnion a he sar o heyear).

    3. Ideniy which readings needo be done each week, dohe readings and capure a

summary o hese readingsor uure reerence.

    4. Ideniy quesions ha willhelp you o fill any gaps rom

he weeks lecures and/orreadings and ask hem auorials. You also atendLecurers office hours, i youneed o, or geting any keyconceps explained ha youaren sure abou.

    5. Form your own sudy-groupsor nework o sudy buddiesso ha you have people odiscuss lecure and readingmaerial wih, brainsormideas, and say moivaedhroughou he year.

Auckland Universiy sudensalso have he benefi o beingable o access he SudenLearning Cenre, where youcan ge inormaion, and ake

classes abou he undamenalskills required o succeed a uni.For more inormaion head owww.cad.auckland.ac.nz, [email protected] or visihem in person a Room 320,Level 3, Inormaion Commonsbuilding, 11 Symonds S.

A UH you will also have accesso workshop sessions and

programmes ha will supporyour academic success. Keepan eye ou on he noice boards, our Facebook page, and alk oyour RA or more inormaion.

    Top Ten Mistakes FirstYears Make

    1. No using appropriaesource maerialI akes a while o ge amiliarwih how o access lieraureand wha is appropriae or usein your assignmens. Here are aew poiners:

    Websies are no academic

sources and are generallyinappropriae. There is heodd excepion, or exampleo cie a saisic off anofficial websie, bu as ageneral rule o humb donuse hem.

Texbooks are a goodsaring poin bureerencing hem inyour assignmens looksamaeurish. Texbooks area secondary collecion oprimary sources, so you canusually locae he originalpublicaion reerences in heexbook and use ha.

For mos conemporarysubjecs, journal aricles areyour bes source o up-o-dae research. Learn how o

use daabases where youcan access journal ariclesonline library courses aregrea or his (and ree!)

Tip: Google Scholar is awesomeand should be knighed SirGoogle Scholar.

University Hall Residents Handbook 2012 9

    2. No paying ateniono source publicaion

daesBe aware o he publicaiondaes o your sources. Whaan appropriae age is reallydepends on your subjec. Anessay on Socraes may reero ex writen in 300 BC, bui youre wriing a paper ongeneics, hen a publicaionrom 2000 is likely o becompleely ou o dae. I youreno sure, check wih a lecureror uor.

    3. Overuse o quoingSome firs years hinkha aking someone elsesexplanaion and putingquoe marks around i is he

equivalen o explaining inyour own words. Is no. Isa missed opporuniy oryou o demonsrae yourundersanding, and i makes youlook lazy. So in general, avoidquoes. The main excepion ohis is i you are using he quoeas evidence as an example osuppor your argumen (moscommon in English papers). I

youre no sure, ask yoursel iyour argumen sill makes sensei you use your own words.

    So you might say:

Shakespeare uses many unnywords. For example, in he line

    mehinks she doh proes oomuch (appropriae reerence)we see wo unny words;

mehinks and doh. Thissuggess ha English languagein ha period was quiedifferen, and so seems unnyo us now.

Here he quoe is being usedas evidence o suppor yourargumen. There would beno sense in puting he quoeino your own words, since isShakespeares precise wordsha are your evidence.

    4. Bad reerencingPoor or incorrecly ormatedreerencing is an easy way omake your wriing look amaeur

and yes, your markers willnoice. The mos annoying hingis ha differen deparmenswill use differen syles.Thas because reerencingsyles were creaed by heacademic journals some wiha long radiion o using heiresablished syle, and is kind oa pride hing. So pay ateniono he syle you need o use

and make sure youre copyingi accuraely litle hings likepuncuaion and ialics are abig deal.

(Tip: Many sudens arenaware o his, bu Endnoe isyour bes riend when i comeso reerencing and will save youso much grie. The sofwareis a ree download rom he

Universiy websie and a reelibrary course will each youhow o use i.)

    5. Inappropriae use ocapial letersFor some weird reason, whenfirs years sar universiy heyorge everyhing hey learnedin year one o primary school!Any word ha seems Imporansuddenly sars geting aCapial Leter. Regardless oWheher is a Proper Nounor No. Words like human, economy and ar are no names,

and do no have capial leters.I i is he name o a person(Marx), a place (Anarcica), amovemen (Expressionism) ora heory (Atachmen Theory)hen capialise.

    6. Use he righ wordsAffec and Effec - learn hedifference. Generally affec is a

verb and effec is a noun (wihsome excepions).

    For example:

Alcohol srongly affecs yourpercepion o oher people. Themain effec is ha hey becamemuch beter looking.

Lose and Loose - They have wovery differen meanings. Lose

is he opposie o win and loosemeans no igh.

For example: I a hread in yourpocke is loose, you migh loseyour money.

Tip 1: For oher words youneed o learn o spell, checkou heoameal.com/comics/misspelling

  • 8/21/2019 University Hall 2012 Handbook

10 University Hall Residents Handbook 2012

Tip 2:When using Word, checkhe dicionary setings on yourspell check. Are you using he

    American or New Zealanddicionary?

    7. Thinking readingequaes o sudyingUnless you are blessed wih aphoographic memory, i you

jus read your noes, you willno remember hem. There are

many grea mehods or sudy like flash cards or mind maps(he Suden Learning Cenrecan help you here). So find amehod ha works or you earlyon in your degree i will serveyou well.

    8. No noe-akingproperlyI youre going o survive uni,you need o ake noes in yourclasses good noes. Noe-aking is a real skill and manysudens never learn his in highschool. The Suden LearningCenre, has grea noe-akingcourses definiely worhchecking ou.

    9. Thinking ha prininghe lecure noes, means

ha you can skip classDo no do i! This is a bad idea. The noes ha Lecurersprovide are only a summaryo he maerial ha will becovered, and are guide or helecure session. Atendance isvial. In addiion, Lecurers willofen give crucial inormaionin class such as opics ha will

be covered in exams, ha heywon publish elecronically.

    10. Being passive, raherhan aciveYou ge ou o uni wha you puin. The more you paricipae inues, he more you hink abouand quesion he maerial youre

reading, he more you seekurher inormaion or guidancerom your lecurers during heiropen office hours and learnrom your eedback he beterhe qualiy o your educaion. And les ace i, his is a majorinvesmen youre paying aorune or i and you may aswell ge he mos ou o everycen.
