Key Terms

Listed below are some key terms used in the fact book. Most of the terms are based on the Glossaries of State University of New York Institutional Research (SUNY IR) and the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS). AAFTE (Annual Average Full Time Equivalent): A unit of measure used by State University of New York (SUNY) and applicable to an academic year and typically derived from student credit hours. SUNY obtains these student credit hours from the SIRIS TERM SECTION submission. Generally speaking, one AAFTE workload is equivalent to 30 student credit hours in undergraduate courses or 24 student credit hours in graduate courses. However, AAFTEs of advanced graduate students are based on headcount and calculated as follows: one AAFTE for full-time advanced graduate students, and .75 AAFTE for part-time advanced graduate students. Please note that for Fredonia, only enrollment in state-supported courses in fall and spring semesters are included in the calculation of AAFTE as courses in summer or j-term are not state-supported. ACT (American College Testing): A test that measures educational development and readiness to pursue college-level coursework in English, mathematics, natural science, and social studies and its scores are used for college admissions. Census Date (for submitting official enrollment data): For typical fall and spring semesters, the census date for the semester is the 15th class day. Cohort: A group of students tracked longitudinally to assess traditional academic outcomes. For example, an entering cohort is typically tracked to establish retention and graduation rates. Common defining characteristics of a cohort may include first-time or transfer status. Continuing student: A student who continues to be enrolled at Fredonia after being enrolled the previous semester.

Degree reporting year: The year when degree awards are reported. The report includes degrees awarded throughout Summer, Fall, J-term, and Spring. For example, for 2009 reporting year, data include degrees awarded in summer 2008, fall 2008, J-term 2009, and spring 2009. Faculty FTE: Faculty full time equivalent. Full-time faculty equal one FTE. Part-time faculty appointment fractions are accumulated to an equivalency of full-time appointments. The full-time or part-time status of faculty is generally defined by contract and for purposes here is extracted from appropriate personnel records from SUNY HR

7

system. Faculty who teach across departments are included only in their primary department as identified in SUNY HR database.

Fall-to-fall Retention rate: Also called first-year retention, a measure of the rate at which students persist in their educational program at an institution, expressed as a percentage. It is the percentage of degree-seeking undergraduates from the previous fall (e.g., the initial fall semester) who are again enrolled in the current fall (e.g., the second fall semester).

To align with national convention, the university fact book uses data on Census Day for calculating retention rate. This means that students are considered retained if they come back for the subsequent semesters and remain enrolled as of Census Day. This change is reflected in Fall 2012 and subsequent cohorts.

FTFY (First-Time-First-Year): Also called First-Time, a student who has no prior postsecondary experience attending an institution for the first time at the undergraduate level. Also includes students enrolled in the fall term who attended college for the first time in the prior summer term, and students who entered with advanced standing (college credits earned before graduation from high school).

Full-Time Student: For enrollment headcount reporting purposes, a full-time student is an undergraduate who is enrolled for 12 or more credit hours or a graduate who is enrolled for 9 or more credit hours.

Graduation rate: The percentage of students from an entering cohort who graduate within a specific time frame at the reporting institution. For example, a first-time, full-time cohort of students in a bachelor’s degree would typically be assessed at 4, 5, and 6 years out.

Lower Division Transfer: Students who transfer to Fredonia for the first time from another college/university and who are classified as a Freshman or Sophomore based on their college level credits earned.

Maximum ACT/SAT Score (MAS): The highest SAT or ACT score in SAT terms.

Minority: Individuals who identify as being in at least one of the following race/ethnicity groups: Asian, Hispanic, Black or African American, American Indian or Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander. Persons of mixed heritage (i.e. two or more races) are considered to be minorities.

SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test): An examination administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) and used to predict the facility with which an individual will progress in learning college-level academic subjects. Its scores are used for college admissions.

8

Page 9: University Fact Book Fall 2017 - fredonia.edu · degrees awarded throughout Summer, Fall, J-term, and Spring. For example, for 2009 reporting year, data include degrees awarded in

SCRH (Student Credit Hour): Also abbreviated as SCH, A measure of instructional activity that is calculated using the following formula: SCRH for a course section = (the number of course credits) times (the number of students enrolled in the section)

Student FTE: The full-time equivalent (FTE) of students is a unit of measure applicable to a semester and typically derived from students credit hours generated. It is used to measure instructional activity or student workload. The Fact Book calculates student FTE for a semester using the following formula: One FTE= Undergraduate 15 credit hours or Graduate 12 credit hours.

Student FTE for each department is derived from students credit hours generated through courses it offers.

S/F Ratio (Student/Faculty Ratio): The number of FTE students per FTE faculty.

Student Type: A student type is assigned to each enrolled student by the Banner system. A student's type may change from semester to semester (e.g., a "new" student in the fall who returns in the spring is considered a "continuing" student during the spring semester).

Upper Division Transfer: Students who transfer to Fredonia for the first time from another college/university and who are classified as a Junior or Senior based on their college credits earned.
