Dear Members,

Lots of April showers have brought us May flowers and remind us of how

Bloomington got it’s name - yes, we have a blooming town!

Looking back on April, we were delighted that the University Women's

Club treated us to George Pinney's Broadway Cabaret at their Spring

Luncheon. Terry LaBolt accompanied these incredibly talented Musical

Theatre students as they sang and danced. We hope the seniors auditioning

in New York get some great contracts to perform on Broadway!

Our University Club Annual meeting featured Joy Harter, President of one

of the Rotary Clubs, who talked about all of us needing a sense of purpose

and engaging in finding meaningful connections in our lives. That can

certainly be accomplished by being an active member of the Club! We

finished the month with a Wine Tasting Dinner. What a splendid way to

dine with wines pared to the foods you are enjoying. The wines from the

Laetita and the Zaca Mesa Vineyards that we enjoyed were available for

purchase after dinner - so the memory of that dinner could linger on!

A new year for our Club is about to begin. We have shifted our leaders into

their new positions and welcome officers, Don Gading, President; Tim

Long, Vice President; Jeane Novotny,

Secretary; and Kaye Hill, Treasurer.

We'll be asking for your help to keep

programs interesting, informative, and

fun! Feel free to offer ideas and help.

Lilies are the birth flower for May. They were so revered by the ancient Greeks that they believed they sprouted from the milk of Hera, the queen of the gods. Long tied to the Virgin Mary, the white Madonna lily represents virtue, while the lily of the valley conveys sweetness and humility. In the language of flowers, this birth flower expresses purity of heart, majesty and honor.

May's birthstone the Emerald, brings happiness,

prosperity, success and goodness. The Emerald is also believed to cure ailments and legends said that emeralds had bewitching and magical properties. Emeralds signify honesty, wisdom, growth and patience.

Congratulations Mary Jo Day!

Mary Jo was the winning entry of our first “FREE LUNCH” contest. She won a free lunch at the Annual Meeting last month by finding the blue Easter Egg nestled in the tulips on the last page of the April Newsletter.

Last month we announced a new contest where you can win a free lunch (or other terrific prize) by finding a hidden word or object buried somewhere in the newsletter. This months prize is a ticket for one of our “Wacky Mystery - History - Comedy Tours!” A $25 value! Broadway Cabaret

What a Show!

The stars were out and shining brightly at the University Women’s Club Spring Luncheon at St. Marks United Methodist Church last month. George Pinney, IU Professor of Theatre and Drama, directed and choreographed a wonderful Cabaret Showcase featuring his first year and senior Musical Theatre students. The performers danced and sang their way into our hearts with a wide variety of classic show tunes that included everything from Al Jol-son to West Side Story. It was a marvelous show!

George has directed and or choreographed over 100 productions including Broadway, West End of London, regional and university theatres as well national and international tours. Nominated for 2001 Tony Award and National Broadway Theatre Award in choreog-raphy for BLAST! George received a 2001 Emmy Award for outstanding choreography for the PBS Broadcast of BLAST! Recognized as a master teacher George was awarded the prestigious Friederich Herman Lieber Award for Distinguished Teaching and was selected for membership in the honorary Faculty Colloquium on Excellence in Teaching.

The performers were accompanied on the piano by the incredible Terry LaBolt! Terry is the Musical Director, of the Theatre Program here at IU. His career as a Broadway conductor flourished in the 1980’s conducting shows such as 42nd Street, Hello, Dolly! (with Carol Channing), George M. (with Joel Grey), and Sugar Babies (with Ann Miller and Mickey Rooney). Endeavors at the keyboard include The Fantasticks (original Off-Broadway produc-tion) and tough touring shows such as The Phantom of the Opera, Evita, Aida and most cur-rently Mamma Mia. He performed the area premiere of Keith Emerson’s Piano Concerto #1 with the Kentucky Symphony Orchestra in 2001. In addition he was the music director of musical theatre for the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music for more than ten years, conducting and supervising over 30 productions there.

The University Club of Indiana University was formed in 1912 to be a central focus for interchange and understanding among faculty, staff, alumni, their spouses, IU Retirees, and members of the community. That same year, New Mexico became the 47th state; the oversea railroad first arrived in Key West; Tokyo gave 3000 cherry trees to Washington D.C. to symbolize friendship; the Carpathia arrived in New York harbor with 708 survivors from the RMS Titanic; Harriet Quimby became the first woman to fly across the English Channel; Woodrow Wilson became President; and Tarzan the Ape Man first appeared in an Ed-gar Rice Burroughs’ novel. The spirit of those early days lives on through the vitality and energy of our 642 current members. Members provide the ideas and talent that make up the quality and depth of our programs and special events. Whether your reason for being a member is making connections, utilizing the club facilities or the programming, one thing is still the same today as it was 103 years ago… Members make the differ-ence and are the driving force of our continued growth. Inclement Weather: The University Club follows MCCSC when closing due to inclement weather.

Reminder for Parking: Just visiting the IMU for some reason or any other place on campus and parking at the IMU? Don’t forget, your membership entitles you to 1/2 off the parking rates. Stop in the office between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. to have your parking ticket stamped.

For those with Food Allergies: Please let us know if you have food allergies when ordering your meals. Currently, all sauces and gravies are made with vegetable stock.

Reservations: Reservations are required for events. In many cases, a meal choice is also requested. If you make a reservation and do not cancel by the deadline date for the event and do not attend the event, we are required to invoice you for the cost for the event.

Credit Cards: The University Club does not accept credit cards.

Speaker Luncheons: Payment for a luncheon entitles you to 2 hours free parking in the IMU Lot 1 and Lot 2. As has always been the case, if you would like to hear the speakers, but cannot make the lunch, you are more than welcome to join in and sit on a comfortable chair and listen. Speakers usually start about 12:15 p.m. and go to ap-proximately 1:00 p.m. or shortly thereafter.

The Bryan’s

are Back!

The portraits of William Lowe Bryan and Charlotte Lowe Bryan have been away for repair for over a year. Now carefully restored to their original beauty, they are back home in the University Club’s Presidents’ Room. William Bryan was the 10th Presi-dent of IU from 1902 to 1937. His portrait was painted by Mrs. John Weaver in 1926. Charlotte’s portrait was commis-sioned by the class of 1918 and painted by Marie Goth. Welcome home William & Charlotte!

date. Special programs and a spring bus trip to an historic site are also planned.

Hardcover books are circulated every two weeks October to May. The final book you

receive is yours to keep. The reading list includes both fiction and non-fiction. A reasona-

ble fee is charged to cover the cost of the books. Books will be passed between members

on the 5th and 20th of each month, beginning October 20th and excepting January 5th.

BOOK DISCUSSION

If you love to read and discuss a variety of interesting books in paperback form, this

group is for you. The group meets on the third Thursday of the month from September

to May to discuss a book selected by members the previous June. Each member reads

the book ahead of time and at some point takes a turn at being a discussion leader

according to the established group guidelines. Hostess duties rotate on a voluntary

Basis. The group meets in each other's homes. Meetings begin with socializing from

9:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Discussion runs from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

You need not be an expert to have fun playing duplicate bridge. Participants

meet at Meadowood in the downstairs Card Room at 12:15 p.m. (games

begin at 12:30) on the first and third Wednesdays of each month. There is a

50-cent per person fee to cover the cost of prizes. Everyone interested in

playing bridge is welcome. You and your partner are welcome to join

anytime during the year.

PARTY BRIDGE

We meet at BOBBY’S COLORADO STEAK HOUSE on the first Monday of each

month at 11:30 a.m. We enjoy lunch and fellowship together, then play bridge until

3:30ish. Bobby’s Colorado offers a soup & salad buffet for $6.50. New members are

very welcome! Yearly dues are $5 to cover miscellaneous costs. In addition at the

beginning of each meeting, each player contributes $1 for the prize for that day.

BUNCO

BUNCO is a fast-moving, uncomplicated game of dice, luck, and prizes. If you like

plain, old fashioned fun you should seriously consider joining the BUNCO SQUAD.

We meet year round on the 3rd Monday of the month at 11:30 am at Meadowood for

lunch and play.

Players contribute $5.00 each time for the cash awards. There are 12 regular players. All others who sign up

serve on the sub list. Those who wish to be a substitute may join at any time.

The Dining Out Group is open to all University Club members, singles and couples

who desire good food, good friends and good times! Everyone is welcome! Joining

the group can be done at any time simply by contacting the chairmen. Schedule and

other information is sent by e-mail (or phone if requested). Response MUST be re-

ceived by the stated deadline. Dining out events are usually the fourth Sunday evening of each academic

month. Dinner is usually preceded by a social time in a member’s home. Seating is in groups of 6 – 8 to

promote conversation and camaraderie.

May 12 ‘Syria’s Refugee Crisis’ with Professor Kevin Martin speaking

Great Decisions is the nation's oldest, most popular program of citizen education

in world affairs. The common purpose is to help members become informed,

involved, and to understand how world events affect their daily lives.

The University Women's Club in cooperation with the Foreign Policy Association,

IU's Center for the Study of Global Change, and Meadowood offer programs for the

2014-2015 year. Meetings will be held in the Terrace Room at Meadowood at 1:15 p.m. on the 2nd Tuesday

of the month September through May. The cost of the series is $15.00 which includes a book of readings.

INTERNATIONAL FRIENDSHIP

Come be a part of this group and enjoy conversation over lunch with an interesting

international student. We share culture, customs and interests!

The luncheons [Dutch treat] are held at Bobby’s Colorado Steak House on the third Friday in the months

of: October, November, January, and February. The March luncheon will be on the fourth Friday. Yearly

registration fee is $5.

If hiking off the usual path interests you, join Eleanor Lahr and others as

they check out hikes in Alan McPherson's Nature Walks in Southern

Indiana and other interesting places. Group size is limited to ten or less,

depending on trail and transportation restrictions. The schedule is subject

SUMMER HIKE — McCORMICK'S CREEK STATE PARK Wednesday, July 15, 2015 John McCormick built a cabin near the canyon in the 1820's. Several trails were built by the C. C. C. in the 1930's. This summer, we will visit some of the hills, forests, waterfalls and geology that brought the pioneering Virginian to Indiana. After a roughly two-mile walk, we'll cool off with drinks at the Canyon Inn. Leave Time: 8:00 a.m. Carpool from March North, Kinser Pike, parking lot. Distance: 2 miles. YOGA

You need not feel intimidated by yoga! If you are interested in improving balance,

breathing, flexibility, and relaxation, this is the group for you. No previous

knowledge of yoga is necessary. Everyone works at their own level.

Our group meets throughout the year each Tuesday from 10 — 11 am at St. Thomas

Lutheran Church in Heritage Hall which promotes a relaxed and spiritual environ-

ment for practicing yoga. St. Thomas Lutheran is located at the intersection of Smith

Road and E. 3rd Street. Parking is plentiful.

Wear comfortable clothes to permit easy movement; bring a yoga mat and a stretchy band or belt. Our

instructors strive to leave you feeling stretched, relaxed and in a better place than when you came through

the door.

You may join us three times before membership in the University Club is required for participation. There is

no additional cost beyond your University Club membership, but we do ask that you give a minimum $20

annual donation to St. Thomas Lutheran Church for the use of their lovely facility.

Garden Jaunts Day Outing Wednesday, June 17, Departs 8:30 AM to Indianapolis

Garfield Park Conservatory & Sunken Gardens is one of Indiana’s most significant works of landscape architec-

ture, located in Indianapolis’ oldest park. With graceful fountains and formal floral displays, its 7,500 square foot con-

servatory houses hundreds of tropical and subtropical plants. The Medicinal Plant Garden at the Indiana Medical History

Museum was created and is maintained by Purdue Master Gardeners of Mar ion County. The garden features

over 90 different medicinal plants, including trees, shrubs, and vines as well as annuals and herbaceous species. Nearly

half of the specimens are Native American medicinal plants, while others originated in Europe, Asia, and Africa. Each

plant is accompanied by signage stating its origin, what parts had medicinal uses, and what some of those uses were. The

stunning scenery of the White River Gardens which includes the indoor Hilbert Conservatory as well as the outdoor

DeHaan Tiergarten, will transport you far away from the urban cityscape of downtown Indianapolis to a lush, natural

oasis. The Hilbert Conservatory is the shining centerpiece of White River Gardens. The 65-foot ceilings flood the space

with light, and the mezzanine level provides a bird's eye view of the glorious indoor gardens below. The variety of plants

and garden designs in the DeHaan Tiergarten changes seasonally and contains whimsical surprises hidden amongst the

many plants and flowers. If you prefer to visit the Indianapolis Zoo, that is an option. Additional stop if time allows.
