Hello Everyone.

We are there!!! Term one is nearly at an end. Most of the students and staff I speak to feel like they have been back for a lot longer than 10 weeks.

Hopefully you have been able to attend the parent/teacher conversations in the past two days. If you have not been able to attend but would still like to speak to your student’s teachers, please contact the school to arrange an appointment at a mutually important time. It is important that you know how your student’s classes are going and what you can do to help support them through their final year/s of secondary school. We know that parent support and active encouragement plays a significant part in a student’s success so please, be involved.

I hope everyone enjoys the break. Take some time to relax but also remember, especially if you are in Year 12, that ‘holidays’ don’t really start this year until late November. Make sure you are up to date with all your subjects both in terms of work that needs to be done and the revision that should be happening all the time if you are doing VCE. And parents, please reinforce this message!

UNIVERSITY CAMPUS - PATHWAYS TO SUCCESS

We want our Students to tell us what they think! We value student voice as a means to improving student engagement, wellbeing and quality instruction and are conducting a survey to find out what your child thinks of our school. The Attitudes to School Survey is an annual student survey offered by the Department of Education and Training to assist schools in gaining an understanding of students' perceptions and experience of school. Our school will use the survey results to plan programs and activities to improve your child's schooling experience. All students from at our school will participate in the survey. Your child will complete the survey online during school hours using a purpose built secure online survey tool. It is important to note that we are not in any way “testing” your child. Your child has the right to refuse or withdraw from the survey at any point before, during, or after completion of the survey. Your child will be provided with a unique login to complete the survey. The student login is an assigned identifier that may be used to link data for statistical and research purposes only. All responses to the survey are kept anonymous in the response file. Personal identification data will not be recorded in the survey response file. This ensures that the confidentiality of your child’s responses is protected at all times.

This year the Attitudes to School survey will be conducted at our school over the period Monday 29 April to Friday 7 June. The survey only takes 20 minutes to complete and occurs

during your child's class time.

The survey results will be reported back to the school before the end of term 2. All survey data that is made available in reports are for groups of students only so that no individual student can be identified. Data suppression rules are used for schools with low student numbers per year level.

It’s Not OK to be Away

Each Campus of Kurnai College will this week be celebrating with the students whose attendance was 90% or above this term. The College is focussing on raising our attendance rates across the board so that all students are aware how important it is to be at school everyday to get the most out of their education. At Kurnai the focus of improving attendance will take many different forms from celebrating success at one end for those attending 90%+ of the time to daily phone calls home at the other end where unexplained absences are deemed to be too high.

Success at school is very closely linked to attendance. If a student is not present to hear the teacher’s explanations, not there to participate in discussions, not there to learn from those around them and not there to listen to different points of view their learning will suffer. Of course if a student is ill or there are other important family matters a student will be absent. For all these absences an explanation should be provided to the school as soon as possible after the absence.

We encourage all parents and guardians to discuss the importance of attending everyday with their student because IT’S NOT OK TO BE AWAY

Debutante Ball 2019

Parents & Carers of students planning to do the Debutante Ball in 2019 need to be aware that as the Deb Ball is an external event to the normal school curriculum, conditions are placed on student participation.

One of these conditions is that families with outstanding charges must be brought up to date before their child can begin dance lessons in preparation for the Deb Ball.

This does not include the College’s yearly school charges but only costs that should have already been paid such as outstanding balances for camps and excursions, extra curriculum music costs or charges relating to damage of school property.

Additionally, full payment for the Deb MUST be made by the 17th April.

In addition to payments made at the campus office, the College offers both Centrepay and Bpay options as a method of payment. Centrepay allows families to have fortnightly amounts automatically deducted from any Centrelink payments.

Due to the number of students expressing their interest this year, unfortunately there will be no flexibility in this matter.

If you have any concerns or wish to organise a payment plan please don’t hesitate to contact the campus office. Any payment plans must be put in place by 21st March.

Term 3 Practice Exams

At Kurnai College we want to make sure that every student achieves their full potential so they feel prepared to leave us at the end of the year ready to take on every opportunity that is provided to them. In order to help achieve this, practice examinations will take place during the Term 3 holidays to ensure that students know what to expect for their final exams at the end of the year. All students who are completing a Unit 3 and 4 subject this year are expected to attend their practice examinations during this holiday period where they will be provided with the experience of undertaking exams in similar conditions as their final ones at the end of October. Once these exams are completed students will receive detailed feedback on their results as well as areas to improve upon. This will help your child to develop a revision plan as well as provide further development of skills ready for their final exam.

A timetable for practice exams will be given out in Term 2 to allow students the opportunity to organise time for their exams as well as holiday lectures and general revision time during this holiday period.

Careers News YEAR 12 STUDENT INFORMATION SESSION Tertiary Information Service (TIS) TIS is a collective of Universities, TAFE institutes and Independent Tertiary Colleges helping students prepare for future careers through free events around Victoria. Each region in Victoria and Tasmania has a TIS event which every school in the local area is invited to. Attending your local TIS event is a great way for Year 12 students to pick up brochures and speak to recruitment staff from every university in Victoria, most TAFE’s and some independent tertiary providers. YEAR 11 VCE STUDENT EXCURSION 2019 THE AGE VCE and CAREERS EXPO 2nd May – Year 11 VCE students This is a heads up for Year 11 VCE students that on Thursday 2nd May they will be attending the VCE careers expo at the Caulfield Racecourse. This is a fantastic opportunity for students to attend VCE seminars as well as speak to various TAFE and Universities. RMIT Update An Engineering degree for everyone At RMIT’s recent Career Practitioner’s day, RMIT announced that from 2020 they will have two options for students entering their Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) degree. Students who have completed VCE Further Maths will be required to complete ‘Intro to Engineering Mathematics’ in Semester 1 and ‘Engineering Mathematics’ in Semester 2. However, students who have completed VCE Maths Methods or VCE Special Maths (or equivalent) will bypass these subjects and commence ‘Engineering Mathematics’ in Semester 1 and their chosen 3rd Elective in Semester 2.

The Australian Government Department of Jobs and Small Business have reported that Audiologists and Speech Pathologists will have a 38.3% increase in projected employment growth in the next five years. Speech Pathologists diagnose, treat and provide management services to people of all ages with communication disorders, including speech, language, voice, fluency, social communication and literacy difficulties. They also work with people who have problems with chewing or swallowing. Speech Pathologists:

Establish the exact nature and severity of each client’s communication and/or swallowing problems, which may require the use of special equipment and tests.

Plan and carry out treatment and management, taking into account age, social, educational and workplace needs and physical and intellectual duties.

Are able to deal with complex and unusual situations. To become qualified as a Speech Pathologist, you usually have to complete a degree in speech pathology at university. To get into these courses, you usually need to have completed your VCE with prerequisites (or assumed knowledge) in one or more of English, Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics. Graduates are eligible for membership of Speech Pathology Australia. Most employers require applicants for speech pathology positions to demonstrate that they are eligible for current practicing membership. For some employers, this is a mandatory requirement.

Speech Pathologists work in public hospitals, rehabilitation centres, community and mental health services, school ’s kindergartens and specialist organisations providing services for people with a disability. Speech Pathologists may also work in private practice and some are involved in teaching and research.

Below is a list of pathway, undergraduate and post graduate courses for future students in Victoria. You will note that LaTrobe University’s 4-year course includes 1.5-year Master of Speech Pathology.
