Phoniatrics is the medical specialty for communication disorders, concerned with diseases and
disorders of voice, speech, language, hearing and swallowing disorders.
The specialty is based on the anatomical, physiological, diagnostic and therapeutic principles of
medical disciplines (Otorhinolaryngology, neurology, psychiatrics, pediatrics, plastic,
maxillofacial, orthodontics) and non-medical sciences ( linguistics, phonetics, psychology,
behavior sciences, pedagogies, acoustics, communication sciences).
1- Program Aims: The aim of this program is to enable the candidate to:
1. Acquire basic knowledge in the field of communication disorders and speech sciences.
2. Understand the pathophysiology and manifestation of communication disorders (Voice, speech
and language) and swallowing problems.
3 Acquire the ability to analyze the clinical data and use appropriate diagnostic tools for
appropriate evaluation and assessment of communication disorders (Voice, speech and
language) and swallowing problems.
4 Interpret the available clinical and instrumental date for proper prevention and intervention of
different communication disorders (Voice, speech and language) and swallowing problems.
5 Recognize the ethical principles of practice and maintain abilities necessary for continuous
medical education.

1 To know the principles of basic anatomical and embryological sciences that
related to voice, speech, language and swallowing disorders in order to
apply them in the management of the clients and to carry out research work.
(1) The candidate will be able to:
1- Discuss the anatomy of the skull, the vertebral column, the face and the
neck and its triangles.
2- Describe the anatomical structure of the ear, nose and pharynx.
3- Identify the structures of the thoracic cavity and the functional anatomy
of the lungs. 4- Describe the embryology and development of these anatomical parts.

1- Describe the anatomy of the vocal tract, the detailed anatomy of the
laryngeal skeleton and muscular system, the macroscopic and
microscopic structure of the vocal folds.
2- Describe the functional anatomy of phonatory system.
3- Demonstrate the anatomical structure and the functional anatomy of
the brain (meninges, cerebral cortex, internal structure, limbic lobe,
ventricles, diencephalon, cerebellum), and brain stem (midbrain, pons,

1-Communication (levels, methods, function).
2-Respiration: mechanism, types (pectoral, abdominal), role of muscles
during phonation and speech, and measurement of respiratory capacity.
3-Larynx: functions, laryngeal sphincters, theories of phonation, vocal
parameters, registers, regulation of the parameter, self regulatory
mechanism and control of the laryngeal and respiratory movement.
4-Cortical organization for language function: cortical areas, cerebral
dominance and its evidence.
5-Hierarchy of motor organization: LMN, UMN, extrapyramidal,

1-Articulatory phonetics (speech sounds, syllable, phonemes, prosody,
phonological development and phonological processes).
2-Acoustic phonetics (sound, wave, intensity, pitch, quality, resonance of the
vocal tract, theories, formants, modification of resonance, acoustic features
of hypernasality).

The phonological development in children. Semantics (definitions,
acquisition of word meaning, theories of semantic development, and

The candidate will be able to:
1- Define psychology and its fields and categorize clinical types of

competent as to the whole of prophylaxis, diagnostics, therapeutics,
rehabilitation, medical report, teaching and research, with reference to the
disorders of voice and swallowing . The course will ensure that the candidate
will be able to work with clients of all ages, including children and adults. The candidate will be able to:
1-Acquire specific knowledge in the epidemiology, etiology, pathogenesis,
prophylaxis, clinical physiology, diagnostics, differential diagnostics,
therapeutics and rehabilitation of the voice disorders that include:
a. Congenital voice disorders.
b. Developmental voice disorders.
c. Non-organic (functional) voice disorders with and without secondary organic
lesions in the larynx, including occupational dysphonia and also singers’ voice.
d. Dysphonia caused by hormones.
e. Dysphonia as a result of organic alterations in the larynx.
f. Voice disorders due to neurological and psychiatric diseases, including vocal
fold paralysis.
g.Voice disorders after operation or trauma of the larynx.
2- Identify the developmental and aging processes as to voice, and swallowing.
3- Analyse and relate the results of all different items of the battery of
investigations in order to reach at an etiological diagnosis and possible
differential diagnosis utilizing his/her theoretical background that draws
charts for different groups of aliments in the field of phoniatrics.

prophylaxis, clinical physiology, diagnostics, differential diagnostics,
therapeutics and rehabilitation of the speech disorders that include:
a. Organic and functional articulation disorders.
b. Nasality, including cleft palate.
c. Dysfluency (stuttering and cluttering)
d. Dysartheria due to neurological (central, peripheral) and muscular diseases.
2- Analyse and relate the results of all different items of the battery of
investigations in order to reach at an etiological diagnosis and possible
differential diagnosis utilizing his/her theoretical background that draws

disorders of language . The course will ensure that the candidate will be able
to work with clients of all ages, including children and adults.
The candidate will be able to:
1-Acquire specific knowledge in the epidemiology, etiology, pathogenesis,
prophylaxis, clinical physiology, diagnostics, differential diagnostics,
therapeutics and rehabilitation of the language disorders that include:
a. Delayed language development in children due to (but not limited to) hearing
disorders (central and peripheral), mental retardation, brain damaged motor
handicapped child (cerebral palsy), autism spectral disorder(ASD), attention
deficit hyperactive disorders (ADHD), Specific language impairment (SLP).
b. Learning disability due to disorders of reading, writing and calculating
(dyslexia, dysgraphia).
c. Dysphasia, aphasia.

2-Perform auditory perceptual assessment.
3-Perform visualization and documentation of the glottis, stroboscopy,
videokymography voice recording, acoustic analysis, aerodynamic
measures, EMG, EGG, voice range profile.
4-Diagnose the swallowing disorders by dynamic and nondynamic
measures.
5-Diagnose the speech disorders such as the Velopharyngeal incompetence
by interview, auditory perceptual assessment, simple clinical tests,
endoscopies, Roentgenological methods, aerodynamic studies, formal
testing, acoustic analysis, EMG, ultrasonic studies and brain function
tests. 6-Diagnose dysarthias by preliminary diagnostic procedures,
clinical diagnostic aids, investigation of neurological disorders,
aerodynamic and acoustic studies, EMG, position sensitive detectors.
7-Diagnose Stuttering by elementary procedures, intellectual and
personality tests, spectrography, EEG, brain electrical activity mapping,
EMG, central auditory testing.
8-Diagnose language disorders such as Delayed language development, by
history taking, neurological and ENT examination, and communicative,
psychological assessment.
9-Assess aphasias by psychological testing, language testing, methods,
neurological examination, tests for apraxia and agnosia, tests for dyslexia.

Provide the candidate with the basic knowledge and skills necessary to be
competent as to the whole of prophylaxis, therapeutics, rehabilitation,
medical report, teaching and research, with reference to the diseases and
disorders of voice and swallowing disorders. The course will ensure that
the candidate will be able to work with clients of all ages, including
children and adults.
The candidate will be able to:
1-Outline the therapeutic measures in the field of diseases of voice, and

Cover the common ENT problems related to clients with communication
and swallowing disorders.
The candidate will be able to:
1-Acquire the basic knowledge for common ENT problems in the domain of
phoniatrics and for basic general surgical skills.
2-Outline the role of pharmacological therapeutic agents in treatment of
diseases of voice, speech, language and swallowing in order to be able to

3-Examine the ear, nose, pharynx and larynx as well as the nervous system

swallowing disorders outlining the methods of diagnosis (bedside,
radiological, laboratory, EEG..) and management.
The candidate will be able to:

prophylaxis, clinical physiology, diagnostics, differential diagnostics,
therapeutics and rehabilitation of the speech disorders that include:

Course Aims
The course provides basic information on principles of the genetic background of inherited
disorders and disease with genetic contribution, types of genetically determined diseases,
mechanism of transmission of genetic diseases, diagnosis of genetic disorders with emphasis on the
specific test to diagnose them, principles of gene therapy and ethical issues in medical genetics.
