There are seven universities in the Republic of Ireland and two in Northern Ireland.

Universities offer degrees at Bachelors, Masters and Doctorate levels andundergraduate and postgraduate diplomas over a full range of disciplines. In additionresearch is undertaken in many areas and the universities are also involved in
continuing and distance education programmes.
Teaching at undergraduate level is normally by way of a programme of lectures
supplemented by tutorials and, where appropriate, practical demonstrations andlaboratory work.
Masters degrees are usually taken by coursework, research work or a combination of
both.
Doctoral degrees are awarded on the basis of research.
Universities award their own degrees using external examiners to ensure consistency
of standards. There is also a Higher Education Authority (HEA) which oversees thework of the universities on behalf of the Department of Education and Science.
The University of Dublin (Trinity College) founded in 1592 is the oldest university inIreland.
The National University of Ireland, founded in 1908 is based on a federal model
and has four constituent universities which are the teaching and research organs ofthe National University. Individually they enjoy a large degree of autonomy. The
constituent universities are:
University College Dublin(UCD);
University College Cork(UCC);
National University of Ireland, Galway
National University of Ireland, Maynooth(NUI-Maynooth);
TheUniversity of Limerick (UL)andDublin City University(DCU) are Ireland's
newest universities, established in 1989.
The Queens University(QUB) of Belfast and the University of Ulster (UU) areboth located in Northern Ireland.
In addition to the universities, there are a number of specialist colleges which arerecognised colleges of the National University of Ireland.

Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT)Under the Dublin Institute of Technology Act, 1992, six existing third-levelcolleges were brought together to form the DIT. It is the largest third levelinstitute in Ireland and until 1997 was the only designated Institute of Technologyin Ireland. As with the universities, it has the statutory authority to award its own
degrees at all levels.
