ABSTRACT

The effect of using Total Physical Response (TPR) on student's understanding for learning English in classroom was investigated. Pre and post- test were used to record changes in the effectiveness for learning English during a four week study period. The purpose of this research is to investigate the use of TPR in teaching reading comprehension to Year Three Intan Pupils in SK Meru Jalan Tap. The method used in this study is based on the TPR activity conducted by the researcher to a group often students, in the classroom. The main reason is to aid pupils in Year Three Intan to be able to understand the text that they read and finally answer questions orally and in written works pertaining to the text that they read. In this study, the researcher investigated how the implementation of TPR into her ten weakest students from Three Intan would impact their understanding of answering comprehension text. Answering comprehension text can be defined as the students' ability to answer the question based on the linear text orally and in written work provided by the researcher. Her motivation for focusing on TPR was twofold. First, as a teacher, the researcher have had interest in using TPR into her lesson in order to make the class have more fun. Secondly, the method recently became useful with the new KSSR curriculum that need students to be more active in the classroom. In this study her students had an opportunity to actively engage with the lesson as they explored by involving physically in the activity conducted by the researcher.

ABSTRAK

Kajian penyelidikan ini dijalankan untuk melihat keberkesanan penggunaan kaedah "Total Physical RespotT terhadap penguasaan pelajar bagi memahami kaedah menjawab soalan kefahaman Bahasa Inggeris di kalangan pelajar tahun tiga. Reka bentuk kajian ini adalah berasaskan model James Asher (1962). Kumpulan sasaran kajian adalah terdiri daripada sepuluh orang murid tahun tiga yang mempunyai pencapaian rendah dalam subjek Bahasa Inggeris. Kaedah yang digunakan dalam penyelidikan ini adalah berdasarkan kepada pra-ujian dan pos- ujian serta pemerhatian di dalam bilik darjah bagi menilai keberkesanan terhadap pemahaman murid mengenai kandungan teks pemahaman yang disediakan oleh penyelidik. Dapatan kajian ini telah membuktikan bahawa teknik ini dapat digunakan untuk mempertingkatkan pencapaian murid tahun tiga dalam memahami petikan kefahaman yang berbentuk "linear text". Kaedah ini sangat sesuai digunakan terutamanya kepada pelajar tahun tiga kerana bersesuaian dengan kehendak kurikulum semasa yang menekankan aspek pembelajaran berorientasikan murid.

Ibrahim, both of whose spirit of determination was felt throughout this process. It is further

dedicated to my siblings who allowed me incessantly to request moments of "quarrel and noisy,"

and ultimately display various levels of emotion while sacrificing weekends, holidays and other

special events. I dedicate it as well to Pn Melissa Malik, my lecturer, who guided me throughout

the process of this research until it is completed

I would also like to dedicate my thanks and gratitude to Syed Jamil Rusydi Syed Baharom and

Syarifah Adibah Syed Baharom who provided additional insights and direction, as well as listening

to the discoveries made during my final defense. The next gratitude goes to Miss Nurul Hidayu

binti Shafie, a TESL student of UiTM who diligently helped me in proofreading until the final

draft.

Next, I would like to further dedicate this to all the great educators in SK Meru Jalan Tap who

helped to mold me and have faith in me to able to pursue a higher education. Without their help,

the final outcome would not have been possible.

Finally, for all members and friends who provided a listening ear along the way, offered help and

support, and ultimately gave me an example that through hard work we would have the opportunity

to rise to greater level of accomplishment. May Allah The Almighty bless all of you
