2. ACTIVITY CHAPTER
2.1. Official recognition on campus
On 30 August 2013 our Student Chapter was established with all benefit that SPIE provides. In the same month, our chapter was officially recognized by our university as a student organization with the purpose to divulge the science, physics and specifically the optics.
Thus, the principal of the EAFIT University, Juan Luis Mejía Arango, gave us the official t-shirt of our student chapter as an honor symbol.

(president).
2.2. Periodical Meetings
In order to plan, discuss, share ideas and evaluate activities, the Universidad EAFIT Student Chapter did periodical meetings during the academic year.
2.3. XIII National Optical Meeting (ENO)- CANCOA
The XII National Optical Meeting (ENO)-CANCOA was a meeting where the members of the Student Chapter could participate in the knowledge of the optics research in our country and where we could have the first approach with other SPIE Student Chapters of our country.
2.4. Facebook and divulgation network
With the purpose to share information about optics, photonics and calendar
activities of the chapter, in 29th November 2013 was created a Facebook page,
where are published photos of activities made along the 2014, and there is also an
invitation to interested people to participate on the informative meeting of the
chapter, pizza meetings and also share information about physical phenomena.

2.5. Welcome new undergraduate students 2014-1
In order to inform and receive the new undergraduate students of the EAFIT
University, at 16 to 18 January 2014, the EAFIT Student Chapter organized the
first activity with different optics experiments to show at the new students to
motivate them to participate in our group and to learn more about optics.
With this event, we show and explain basic phenomena in optics such as
reflection, refraction, interference and diffraction of light.
We could talk with young students of different disciplines like biology, physics
engineering, mathematical engineering, politics science and many more. We
obtained a good answer principally by the new students of programs related with
science areas. They were interested in being part of the student chapter and
motivated to research more about applications of optics in their fields of interest.
Also, in the Auditory Fundadores, with the others presidents of the sutent
organizations of the campus we could talk with all the new students of the different
careers, so we could share with around 1000 new students of the EAFIT University
about our objectives, SPIE, the benefits to be part of SPIE and motivate them to
enroll in our student Chapter.
In the microphone, the president of the Universidad EAFIT Student Chapter.
2.6. Informative meeting
With the purpose to share with the interested students on campus about our
functioning, activity program, benefit to be member of SPIE and enroll new student
at the chapter, we organize an informal talk which was conducted at 25 February
2014. 15 students assisted to the talk.
2.7. EAFIT Children University and EAFIT SPIE Student Chapter
The EAFIT Children University is a program of the EAFIT University with the
purpose to bring children and teenagers more close to the scientific knowledge in
many different areas of science, this program is developed in the University, so
they plan and develop workshops based on questions, experimentation, games
and conversation.
In this way, we started a conversation with the Children University of the EAFIT
University to build methodologies to develop activities for children and teenagers
that allow them to understand more and quesion about optics and physical
phenomena.
With this purpose, the Children University conducted one of their workshops about
the nature of light and colors, in this activity we could learn about their
methodologies.
We had a lot of fun and laughs!
2.8. Scientific Laboratory – Learning about light.
We were invited to participate in the “Scientific Laboratory” (Science Fair) by the
Santa Leoní Aviat School where we could develop a workshop related with the
nature of light, reflection and refraction. In this way, with the methodology learned
with the EAFIT Children University we conducted a workshop based on
conversation, questions, experimentation and games.
Also, with every group of students, we developed an experiment that evidenced the
concepts discussed in the workshop, so the students built kaleidoscopes and
periscopes, so they were able to learn and enjoy.
In this activity we could share the experience with 170 girls of the primary school.
Working, playing, learning and enjoying with the girls
Sharing with all school the knowledge learned on the workshop.
2.9. Pizza meetings
We took a time to share experiences, mistakes and new ideas with all members of
the Chapter while we enjoyed a delicious pizza.
This activity let us to socialize and build a familiar group of work.
2.10. Optics and Photonics SPIE
The SPIE Optics and Photonics conference in San Diego was an amazing and
unforgettable experience. This experience not only contributed the formation and
knowledge of Daniela Bolaños and all members of the Student Chapter, but also in
a meaningful way this conference contributed with the meeting of other cultures by
sharing academic works with people around the world, by meeting different
languages, different kinds of thinking, different ways of dressing, dancing and
eating. Also, the possibility of meet different companies that develop optics and the
possibility of share and know the works that other student Chapters develop
around the world. All of this contributes in the building of a scientific community, but
above all a group of person motivated for the development of optics and photonics.
In San Diego, we had the opportunity to expose and publicize the FOCUS event
that was going to perform in our Chapter joined with other Colimbian Chapters at
November.
The following pictures illustrate what Universidad EAFIT Chapter lived in the Optics
and Photonic Conference in San Diego

2.11. Recruitment 2014
With the purpose to share to the interested students on campus about our
functioning, activity program, benefit to be member of SPIE and enroll new student
at the chapter, we organized a video explaining our mission and vision, where we
also showed some activities realized at the moment.
In addition, we explain and share optical experiments to motivate the students on
campus to participate at our Chapter. We placed ourselves on one of the principal
hall of the university.
2.12. FOCUS
The FOCUS (The Federation of Optics College and University Students) was an
international event, where Lecturers and students from many countries of the world
met in an congress organized by eight Colombian chapters. The FOCUS Latin
America 2014 took place in EAFIT University, and it was made with the idea of
allowing optics researchers to discuss about their investigations in optics, building
new contact network and have the opportunity to know from best Scientifics the
latest developments on the different fields of optics and photonics. This experience
for our chapter was not only an academic experience, it was also an opportunity to
learn about organization, management and to build closer relationships with the
other Colombian Chapters and Lecturers.
The link of the FOCUS even page is the following:

The Lecturers that took part on the event and their presentations are the
following:
James Wyant [Professional Development]
Ricardo Amézquita: Professional Development “haciendo
hologramas en Colombia”
Jerome Kalifa [Bio&optics]: “Photodynamic Modulation of Fibrillation
Electrical Sources: Can We Enlight Arrhythmias?
Hans Bjelkhagen [Holography]: "Ultra-Realistic Imaging: A New
Beginning for Display Holography"
Elder De la Rosa [Nanophotonics]: "Challenges and opportunities in
nanophotonics"
Ignacio Martínez [Optical Tweezers] "Experimental stochastic
thermodynamics: From optical tweezers to thermal engines in the
mesoscale"
Juan Campos [Difractive%Optics] "Design of Stokes and Mueller
polarimeters based on liquid crystal displays"
Hernando García [Espectroscopia Ultrarrápida, Optica no lineal,
Plasmónica] "Evolutionary Dynamics as a Model for a Laser Behavior
Near threshold"
For the event we offered to our lecturers, speakers and assistants: lunch and
refreshments for the three days of the event, free coffee, tee and water, Turistic
material about Medellin, traditional Colombian bags, and prices for the best
presentations in oral and poster modality, this prices contained gifts from the SPIE
ibrary and economical part.
The sponsors of this event can be seen on the web page of the event.
