The three readings are about Love with a capital L.

Everything in heaven and in our universe began in and with Love. The creation of the heavens, the universe, the development of the earth and the creation of the first man and woman were all acts of God’s love.

God gave to human beings the special gift of freedom. God knew he was taking a risk, that some people would misuse their freedom, turn away from loving him and go their own way. However, the thought that people would freely choose to serve him when they could have refused, filled him with delight.

Unfortunately, sin came into the world through the disobedience of the first man and woman. As a result, they were put out of the Garden of Eden into a harsh world. But God’s love did not abandon them. God promised that in time, he would send a Messiah who would save his people from their sins.

The time came when God fulfilled his promise to Adam and Eve. God the Son came down on earth as man, chose a human mother, Mary of Nazareth, and was born in a stable at Bethlehem. For many years, Jesus lived in Nazareth, a backwater village, working as a carpenter. When he was about 30, he began his public ministry and that was to spread the Good News of God’s love for the world.

The religious leaders refused to accept his message as it would have meant too great a change in their way of life. They looked on Jesus as a troublemaker and because of his miracles, they were afraid that he would attract many followers. So he had to die.

Jesus knew what they intended but remained faithful to his Father’s will and continued to spread the message of his love for the world. This finally brought him to death on Calvary. God’s love for his creatures remained unchanged. It was the misuse of human freedom that brought Jesus to his death.

In his letter to the Ephesians, Paul emphasises the message of Jesus. Salvation is a gift from a loving God. We have been saved by grace, not by anything that we have done. We do not earn our way to heaven, we do not merit it. It is God’s gift. Paul tells us that we are “God’s work of art”.

God has created us and continually offers us his graces to make us the persons he intended us to be: grace to love him more; grace to overcome and avoid sin; grace to let our love for God overflow in love for those in need; grace to be like Jesus, so that no matter what may happen to us, we will put all our trust in God, firmly believing that beyond Calvary, there is Resurrection and the hope of everlasting life.
