Welcome! The Office of Multicultural Student Affairs would like to welcome our new readers to the Unity newsletter. The Unity Newsletter is a publication by the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs, which provides the latest information about events going on campus, scholarship and ways of getting involved. MSA has several resources to help you throughout your time at UM. Our Urban Access Guide is a resource handbook on UM and the Miami community. We will be distributing copies throughout the semester at our programs or feel free to stop by the office and pick one up. Black Awareness MonthThis February, United Black Students, partnered with the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs, presents Footsteps: Walk This Way To Learn About Diversity. During Black Awareness Month 2011 is bringing back the annual events that University of Miami students know and love. Black Awareness Month, commonly referred to as BAM by students, is the University’s version of Black History Month, which was created as “Negro History Week” in 1926. The creator, Carter G. Woodson, chose February to coincide with the birthdays of Frederick Douglas and Abraham Lincoln, two crucial contributors in the progression of Black people in America. Gilman Scholarship Information Session5pm, February 2, Allen Hall Room 101

Get more information on the Gilman scholarship, a study abroad scholarship aimed at diversifying study abroad. Designed for Pell grant recipients, this scholarship offers up to $5000 for semester programs and $3000 for summer program. The information session will feature a video, student panelists, and a Q&A session.

Heartsaver CPRDeadline: January 31

Heart Saver CPR course teaches CPR and relief of choking in adults, children, and infants, as well as use of barrier devices for all ages. Optional: infant CPR and choking; adult, child, and infant CPR with mask. The class is February 1 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The cost is $15 for student members, $25 for non-student members and $35 for non-members. Book Loan ProgramAs a student, sometimes resources are scarce and you need a little assistance to get your semester off to a great start. The Office of Multicultural Student Affairs provides short term book loans to African, Hispanic, Asian and Native American undergraduate students to assist with purchasing books at the beginning of each semester. The book loan program is funded by private donors who are interested in supporting the academic goals of students of color at the University of Miami. Seniors cannot apply for a Book Loan. In order to receive a book loan, you must meet the following criteria. Lewis Book Loan criteria: 1. Cumulative G.P.A. of 2.0 or better. 2. Must be a freshman or first semester transfer student. 3. Read, complete form and sign agreement. 4. Objective evidence of financial need as indicated by a copy of the students FAFSA. 5. Ability to repay the loan within sixty (60) days. 6. Good academic standing (not on any university probation). 7. You can find the application here Citizen’s Board / William “Billy” Appelrouth Book Loan: 1. Cumulative G.P.A. of 2.0 or better. 2. IIEP Conversation ProgramAre you interested in learning about new cultures? Are you interested in meeting people from different countries? Would you like to help an international student practice English? If you answered yes to any of these questions, the Conversation Program is for you! The Conversation Program matches University of Miami students with UM’s Intensive English Program (IEP) students. IEP students come from over 30 different countries and are excited to perfect their English skills and learn the American culture. Most IEP students attend University in the United States upon completion of the IEP program. This program is designed to benefit everyone! The native English speaker can learn about new cultures and positively impact an international student’s transition to American life. The non native English speaker can improve their language skills and immerse themselves into American culture. Talking Tuesdays are offered once a week in Allen Hall 101 from 3:00-4:30. Games and conversation ideas are provided and of course coffee and cookies too! The IEP also organizes one monthly group activity. How can I join? Special Interest Housing Group Applications AvailableGroup Applications due Feb. 9 by 5 PM

Office of Academic Enhancement, Pearson Residential College, Suite #144The Office of Academic Enhancement and the Department of Housing and Residential Life invite groups of students to submit applications to create Special Interest Housing (SIH) communities for 2011-12. SIH provides an opportunity for students united by a common interest, activity, or cause to live together in a themed living-learning environment. In addition to living together, groups will receive specialized funding for programs, advising and training to assist in the programming and management of the floor. Groups interested in creating a SIH Community for 2011-12 should visit www.miami.edu/sih to download and submit a group application by February 9, 2011. Approved SIH communities will be announced on February 18, 2011 and will receive community space in Mahoney, Pearson, or Eaton Residential Colleges. BLS for Health Care ProvidersDeadline: February 10

The Basic Life Support for healthcare providers covers core material such as adult and infant CPR (including two-rescuers scenario and use of the bag mask), foreign-body airway obstruction and automated external defibrillation (AED). This course is for healthcare providers such as EMS personnel, physician assistants, doctors, dentists, nurses, and respiratory therapists who must have a card documenting successful completion of a CPR course. The class is Friday, February 11, from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The cost is $45 for student members, $55 for non-student members and $65 for non-members. Flag Football Mini SeasonDeadline: February 2

Football season is over but that doesn’t mean you have to stop playing the game. Registration is now taking place for intramural flag football leagues. The deadline to register is February 2 and the captain’s meeting will take place on February 3 at 5:30 p.m. A $20 refundable entry fee is due at the time of registration. Don’t have a team? No problem! Just sign up as a free agent on the roster. To sign up, go to room 210 of the Herbert Wellness Center. Paid Intern Exchange in Berlin for Journalism & Communication Students

Application Deadline: January 31, 2010

Freie Universität Berlin and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) are pleased to announce the fourth year of an intensive scholarship-supported summer seminar/internship program in Berlin for American journalism and communications students. The program is targeted primarily at currently enrolled undergraduate students, but a limited number of graduating Seniors, recent graduates and Master’s students may be accepted as well. Thomas R. Pickering Undergraduate Foreign Affairs Fellowship Deadline: February 9, 2011

The Thomas R. Pickering Undergraduate Foreign Affairs Fellowship program provides funding to participants as they are prepared academically and professionally to enter the United States Department of State Foreign Service. The Pickering Undergraduate Foreign Affairs Fellowship seeks to recruit talented students in academic programs relevant to international affairs, political and economic analysis, administration, management, and science policy. The goal is to attract outstanding students from all ethnic, racial, and social backgrounds who have an interest in pursuing a Foreign Service career in the U.S. Department of State. The Program develops a source of trained men and women from academic disciplines representing the skill needs of the Department, who are dedicated to representing America’s interests abroad.

Thomas R. Pickering Graduate Foreign Affairs Fellowships Deadline: February 7, 2011

The Thomas R. Pickering Graduate Foreign Affairs Fellowship program provides funding to participants as they are prepared academically and professionally to enter the United States Department of State Foreign Service. The goal of the fellowship program is to attract outstanding students who enroll in two-year master’s degree programs in public policy, international affairs, public administration, or academic fields such as business, economics, political science, sociology, or foreign languages, who represent all ethnic, racial and social backgrounds and who have an interest in pursuing a Foreign Service career in the U.S. Department of State. The program develops a source of trained men and women who will represent the skill needs of the Department and who are dedicated to representing America’s interests abroad.

The Village Voice Digital Media Fellowship for Minority

StudentsDeadline: Feb. 8, 2011.

The Village Voice family of companies, in conjunction with the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University, is offering an intensive, 10-week, fellowship for minority students concentrating on web and digital media. Digital fellows will be immersed in blogging, photography, video, audio and social media and will produce original, reported material for Village Voice online publications. Program instructors will include top Cronkite faculty as well as the nation’s leading news, music and food writers from the Village Voice family of websites and newspapers. Fellows will be paid $500 per week. Housing will be provided. The program is open to students who are within one year of graduation, graduate students or post grads. The course runs from June 1 to Aug. 6, 2011, at Cronkite’s state-of-the-art journalism school in the heart of downtown Phoenix. The Minority Students in Health Careers Motivation Program Deadline: March 8th

The Minority Students in Health Careers Motivation Program (MSHCMP) aims to build diversity in the health and allied health pro¬fessions, especially medicine, by providing students from underrepre¬sented backgrounds an opportunity to develop the skills necessary to successfully compete for admission to schools in these fieldsDesigned to be a mini first-semester medical education experience, this full-time, seven-week residential program exposes participants to classroom instruction in select basic science courses in the medical education curriculum and offers physician-shadowing opportunities. Great attention is placed on identifying and removing any barriers that may prevent a participant from being a competitive medical school applicant. Workshops develop skills for preparing strong admissions and financial aid applications. Each participant leaves the program with a realistic appraisal of his or her readiness for medical school. ELIGIBILITYThe program is open to college juniors or seniors, as well as recent college graduates, who aspire to apply to health profession schools, especially medicine. Applicants must have had organic chemistry in order to handle the course material. The admission committee chooses the top 25 students who demonstrate that they will benefit from participation and are likely to be competitive applicants for medical school. Other criteria include: Citizen or permanent resident of the United States Must be one of the following: – African American/Black – Hispanic/Latino – Multi-ethnic Must also be one of the following: – Matriculating student who has completed at least two years of undergraduate science or premed training – Recent science or premed graduate (post-baccalaureate) – Matriculating unclassified graduate student in science or in pre-health profession education Minimum science and cumulative GPA of 2.8 on a 4.0 systemApplicants should request an application from the Office of Academic Enhancement. AFSCME/UNCF/Harvard Union Scholars ProgramDeadline: February 28th

Since 2003, the American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), has partnered with the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) and the Harvard Labor and Worklife program on a scholarship program for students of color who are sophomores or juniors and interested in fighting for social justice.
