IntroductionWorld Over glass is being used extensively as material of construction in the Chemical, pharmaceutical food and drink and allied industry due to its * excellent corrosion resistance to very large number of chemicals, unmatched By other material. * smooth pore free surface * clear visibility.

All the glass components fabricated by UNITY GLASS INDUSTRY are from Borosilicate glass 3.3.The Main advantage of this type of glass is its almost universal corrosion Resistance and low coefficient of thermal expansion.Glass plants, pipelines and components fabricated by UNITY GLASS INDUSTRY complies with theFollowing international standards * BS EN 12585:1999- Glass Plant, Pipeline & Fittings Compatibility & Interchangeability. * BS EN 1595:1997- General rules for design, manufacturers & testing.

Properties of Borosilicate glass 3.3The Borosilicate glass 3.3 used in the fabrication by UNITY GLASS INDUSTRY complies generallyWith the following chemical composition.

The most important mechanical property of borosilicate 3.3 glass is that theCompressive strength is high and the tensile strength is low. As a result glassProcess plants are supported from the lowest point.

Chemical Resistance

Borosilicate glass 3.3 is resistant to almost all chemicals except hydrofluoricAcid, phosphoric acid, and strong caustic solutions. Hydrofluoric acid has Maximum effect on glass and presence of this acid even at ppm levels canCause corrosion.Phosphoric acid and caustic solution at cold conditions do not pose muchProblems. However at elevated temperatures these corrode glass.The Curves in fig .1 show a maximum corrosion for different acids in the Concentration range between 4 and 7 N (HCL for example at the azeotropeWith 20.2 wt % ). Above that the reaction speed decrease markedly so thatThe eroded layer amounts to only a few thousandths of millimeter after someYears. There is, therefore, justification for referring to borosilicate glass 3.3 as an Acid-resistant material.

It can be seen from the corrosion curves in fig.2 that the attack on the glassSurface initially increase as the concentration of the caustic solution increaseBut after exceeding a maximum it assumes a virtually constant value. RisingTemperatures the reaction speed is so low that reduction of the wall thicknessIs hardly detectable over a number of years.

Permissible Operating Temperature The strain point temperature, at which deformation would take place, of Borosilicate glass 3.3 is around C . The glass retains is properties till thisTemperature. However the recommended operating temperature is Considerably lower at 200 Deg..C and that too without any temperature shocks.In exceptional cases the glass components can be used beyond 200 deg. CCustomers should consult UNITY GLASS INDUSTRY for such special applications.

At sub-zero temperature borosilicate glass has better tensile strength.

These temperature mentioned above are only indicative and would vary withIndividual operating conditions, and the various components used in the system.The limiting conditions would have to based on this.

Rapid changes of temperature would result in thermal shocks resulting in Increased stress in the glass. Therefore, under normal operating conditions suchThermal shocks should be avoided. As a general guideline, sudden temperature changes of up to 120 deg. C would be acceptable.

Permissible Operating Pressure

Borosilicate glass plant & pipeline is used in both internal pressure and vacuum Application.

The maximum operating pressure for a complete system is governed by the Lowest rated component in the system.

The maximum operating pressure is reduced with increasing temperature Difference between the process and ambient.

The allowable operating pressures are dependent on the nominal bores of The components.

UNITY GLASS INDUSTRY manufactures Flat Buttress end connection, as standard for all its components.However UNITY GLASS INDUSTRY can offer either “QVF” type tapered or “SCHOTT” type of end Connections as per specific requirement of customers. In the “QVF” typed tapered flanges axial forces are exerted while tightening and this could lead to breakage of glass. In the UNITY GLASS INDUSTRY FLAT BUTTRESS END type flanges radial forces are exerted for tightening and does not break the glass while tightening.

The tolerances on length L together with dimensions L1, L2 and L3 of Components, unless otherwise specified for given components in this catalogue.

Jacketed ComponentsUNITY GLASS INDUSTRY can supply jacketed version of all components listed in the catalogue, such as pipe and fittings, column components, heat exchangers and vessels. The glass jacket is sealed on to the component either by fusing, by silicon rubber or in a combination of both. The jacketed components help in saving energy by minimizing heat loss, and to maintain the product characteristics at the desired temperatures.
