B Read the brochure quickly and find out where a special art collection is kept.

C Read the brochure again and answer the questions. Choose from parts A-F.

Did you know that the boots Neil Armstrong wore on the moon in 1969 were thrown away before he returned to Earth to make sure no germs could come back on them?

B Room 1The celebrity footwear section is probably the most popular in the entire museum and it makes visitors green with envy. Started in the 1950s, there is a vast selection of shoes and boots belonging to everyone from queens and prime ministers to pop stars and actors. Most visitors find this display fascinating.

Did you know that Napoleon Bonaparte’s servants had to wear his shoes to soften them before he would wear them?

C Room 2Most of our visitors are amazed by the selection of special purpose shoes on display and they even find some of the exhibits shocking. For example, there are tiny silk shoes from China which were used to bind women’s feet to prevent them from growing properly.

Did you know that women are four times more likely to have foot problems than men?

D Room 3The museum also exhibits an incredible variety of shoe-shaped objects. For example, there is a bronze lamp which

resembles a pair of sandals, and there are some perfume bottles which look like legs.

Did you know that shoes were one of the very first human inventions? Although early humans probably started covering their feet about 500,000 years ago, some scientists believe that humans started wearing shoes similar to ours around 26,000 years ago. The oldest known shoes are about 9,000 years old.

E The Footwear LibraryPeople come from all over the world to study in our comprehensive footwear library. Designers and researchers come here to look up information on anything and everything related to the subject of footwear.

Did you know that in our lifetime we will walk the equivalent of three and a half times around the Earth?

F The Footwear CaféAfter your visit to the museum, you may like to pay a visit to our Footwear Café. Although the decor is probably not what you would expect to find in a museum, we hope you will enjoy our footwear-related art collection. Finally, you must try some of our special cakes, which follow a footwear theme, of course!

A IntroductionWelcome to the Footwear Museum, which has one of the largest collections of footwear in the world. Here at the Footwear Museum you can see rare exhibits from around the globe. You can find out about shoes, boots and sandals worn by anyone from the ancient Egyptians to modern celebrities.
