The wearable device market is expected to nearly quadruple from 118 million units in 2016 to 430 million by 2022, according to market intelligence company Tractica At UnitedHealth Group, we see a future where wearable health technologies provide real-time biometric feedback, helping people understand the connection between daily micro-behaviors and long-term health, acute and chronic-care management, and health care costs. By putting real-time data in peoples’ hands and encouraging them to become more active and engaged, we are helping people take charge of their health and pursue their fitness goals.

Clinical research reveals the key to behavioral change: Money

Source: Savvy Sherpa, October, 2013, Southwest Medical Associates Motion Challenge.

Presenter
Presentation Notes
UnitedHealthcare Motion is based on clinical research. In addition, we have researched the behavioral component. What motivates employees to longitudinal behavior change? Is it points? Gift cards? No surprise — it is money! Lots of money drives greater behavioral change. In fact, more money resulted in the greatest increase in steps. And our research findings have shown that for every 1,000 steps above 5,500, the opportunity cost impacted can be as high as 5%. (NOTE: This stat is also in the results summary.) The purpose behind UnitedHealthcare Motion is an easy-to-implement, easy-to-use walking program. UnitedHealthcare Motion provides incentives and inspiration to encourage a healthier lifestyle. If this sounds good to you, you are not alone. Nearly ¾ of employers want to raise employee awareness of health and risks.1 Source: Staying at Work- Global- 2016, Willis TowersWatson And from an employee perspective, health care consumers are asking for help to improve their health and wellness. Let’s take a closer look to see how simple this program really is for you and your employees. Soeren, M., Lui, H., et. al. (2013). Workplace Wellness Programs Study: Final Report (Rep.). How it works.

UnitedHealthcare Motion

Purchased device sent to home address. Member sets up device, begins walking and syncs weekly.

Member creates an account online and selects device or uses their own1.

Activation credit applied to purchase a device or taken as a reward if own device is used.

Participants can earn $3 or $4, which is deposited quarterly into their HSA or HRA.

All they have to do is walk.

The goal is to have 60% of your employee population participate in the UnitedHealthcare Motion program. It works.

1. Eligible employees and covered spouses create an account on unitedhealthcaremotion.com and select an activity tracker from the website or they can use a Motion-compatible activity tracker they already own.

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Participants go to unitedhealthcaremotion.com to create their account and either select an activity tracker from the website or they can use a Motion-compatible activity tracker they already own. An “activation credit” can be applied to purchased devices or taken as a reward if they use their own device. Purchased devices are delivered to the member’s home. Members receive devices, set them up and begin walking to meet daily FIT (Frequency, Intensity, Tenacity) goals. Employees and enrolled spouses wear the tracker every day and synch their data at least weekly. Note: It is important for participants to sync their device at least weekly. Every day employees can earn a $3 incentive deposited into an HSA. All they have to do is walk. Let’s take a closer look at those FIT goals.

F Frequency. 500 steps in seven minutes; six times a day, at least one hour apart.

I Intensity. 3,000 steps in 30 minutes. $1.25 $1.00

T Tenacity. 10,000+ total daily steps. $1.25 $1.00

$4/day $1,460/year

$3/day $1,095/year Employee and Spouse can each earn:

Presenter
Presentation Notes
The incentive is broken into the three FIT goals, which stands for Frequency, or the number of times they are physically active, Intensity, or periods of time of high physical activity, and Tenacity, or achieving aggressive total daily activity goals. For example, employees earn credit for taking six seven-minute walks a day (minimum of 500 steps), achieving 3,000 steps in 30 minutes and 10,000 total daily steps. Frequency is the most valuable activity from a metabolic basis. You can’t just get up and exercise in the morning and then sit around all day. Employees can track their goal progress and credits online in real time.

Increasing your deductible:

Saves your company money …

… but increases employee out- of-pocket costs.

+ –

However, when employees and eligible spouses participate in Motion, the rewards earned and deposited into their HSA or HRA may help cover higher medical expenses.

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Often employers find that increasing their medical plan deductible increases the engagement and ownership of enrolled employees and dependents, which lowers overall costs. Of course, employees would prefer the deductible to be as low as possible. With UnitedHealthcare Motion, you can have both. Let’s say your medical plan currently has a $1,000 deductible. Increasing the deductible could save your company money due to lower claim costs, but employee out-of-pocket costs will be higher. However, when employees and eligible spouses participate in UnitedHealthcare Motion, the rewards earned and deposited into their HSA or HRA may cover their higher medical expenses.

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Employers receive monthly activity reports that recap the achievements of their employees. They can pull these reports themselves or an SAE or FAM could run them. These reports protect PPI and show an aggregate snapshot of employee performance. Groups can use this data to motivate and encourage employees to reach their goals.
