Last Summer, United Way of Northwest Louisiana was named the nonprofit provider for the Financial Empowerment Center (FEC) in partnership with the City of Shreveport. The FEC offers free, high-quality one-on-one financial counseling services for low income residents.

The Cities for Financial Empowerment Fund (CFE Fund) announced plans in November 2017 to replicate the proven Financial Empowerment Center model thanks to a $7.7M investment from Bloomberg Philanthropies as part of its American Cities Initiative. Shreveport is one of 26 local governments across the country to be selected as initial grantees of the expanded program. The center will operate to meet with local residents and help them build assets, reduce debt, budget for the future, improve their credit scores and access safe and affordable banking services.

“2018 was one filled with challenges and opportunities. We elected to champion more proprietary programs that benefited our ten parish region as a whole while maximizing available resources to continue to support our partner agencies that also serve our communities. Launching and funding 211, promoting Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, operating the Bank On Northwest Louisiana initiative, and awarding grants to numerous nonprofits that take care of our neighbors were all major accomplishments in 2018. I offer my heartfelt thanks to our staff and board for their hard work and dedication to our community.”
