President and CEOLETTER FROM OUR

OKLAHOMANS ARE A RESILIENT PEOPLE WHO HAVE BRAVED AND RECOVERED from some of the worst storms and disasters in our Nation’s history. The recent Oklahoma state budget disaster that has hit our state extremely hard and the cuts will have the greatest negative impact on those who are living in poverty. Last year, the Oklahoma Policy Institute reported that one in six Oklahomans lived in poverty in 2014. With the recent revenue failure, the predictions for families living in poverty are dismal. In our State’s economic crisis, it will not simply be those who are unemployed or underemployed who find it difficult to survive. People living in poverty or on the edge will feel the change quickly and will bear the negative consequences of the budget failure.

Ninety-seven percent of Urban League clients have an annual income of less than $39,000 for a family of four, which is below the federal poverty line. Nearly eighty percent of Urban League clients have an annual income of less than $20,000 a year. Many clients often come to the Urban League in search of employment but also seek housing, social services, transportation and education.

African American families and communities of color experience the economic downturns much earlier than Main Street. According to The Washington Post, the poverty that poor African Americans experience is often different from the poverty of poor whites. It’s more isolating and concentrated. Poverty extends out the door of a family’s home and occupies the entire neighborhood around it, touching the streets, the schools, and the grocery stores. A poor black family is much more likely to live in a neighborhood where many other families are poor creating what sociologists call the “double burden” of poverty. The hidden impacts of

poverty- the necessities of life - often go unaddressed.

In this difficult time for our State, the Urban League remains committed to breaking the poverty cycle for every child and family in Oklahoma City. I encourage you to get involved with the Urban League, and give a contribution today that will help lift a child or family out of poverty.
