GENERATIONAL GIVING

the eskridge family has shared much through the years. ed eskridge, his wife, barbara and their two children, lynn and frank, have shared the family businesses, their pride in oklahoma City and their commitment to community for as long as they can remember.

barbara eskridge, who recently turned 90, said giving to the community has always been a family tradition, so it’s hard to recall exactly when they began supporting the United Way of Central

oklahoma, but it must have been around the time Ed opened the family’s first car dealership in 1952.

ed, who passed away in 2010, developed a passion for automobiles while he was a teenager, working summers at the oklahoma hudson dealership in automobile alley on north robinson near downtown oklahoma City.

after college, he formed eskridge-Wright oldsmobile in Capitol hill and operated the

dealership for nearly 50 years. during that time, ed opened three other dealerships and eventually introduced his two children, and later his grandchildren, to the automobile business. through those years, the family’s commitment to the United Way only grew.

“We always felt like it was one of the top organizations to give to,” barbara said. “there are so many organizations, but the United Way was able to ensure that all the services they were working with were viable and beneficial.”

in the late 1970s, the eskridge family extended giving opportunities to employees at each of their dealerships, which included the oldsmobile dealership as well as Oklahoma’s first Honda dealership in oklahoma City, one of the nation’s first Lexus dealerships and a Chevrolet dealership in Guthrie, said frank eskridge, president of eskridge auto Group.

lynn eskridge fielding, eskridge auto Group’s human resources director, said the United Way does a good job of bridging gaps that can develop among community services. they always ensure critical needs are met, and the organization has

always done a good job of communicating with eskridge employees.

each year, United Way representatives come to the dealerships to talk about fundraising goals for that season’s campaign, and they talk about community needs, so everyone knows the role their financial support plays in helping neighbors.

She said they enjoy the United Way giving campaigns every year, coming up with events, activities and rewards for the company’s 225 employees. They’ve included fitness challenges, walk-a-thon competitions, jeans day on United friday and paid day off drawings.

“We’re always trying to do different things to motivate people to give,” she said.

the eskridge family’s support of United Way extends far beyond their workplace campaigns; it’s a value that has been passed down through three generations of their family. barbara, her children, lynn and frank, as well as her granddaughter kim adkins, all generously contribute to the United Way as members of the leadership Giving Society.

it’s our community. there are lots of needs, and it’s up to us all to provide the help. it’s very important.

When luke Corbett and his wife, becky, arrived in 1985, they discovered oklahoma was a lot like their home state of Georgia.

“oklahomans believe in God, country and family. they believe in helping people and they do it all the time,” Corbett said. “that’s the way they are in Georgia.”

So, setting down roots in oklahoma City was no problem for Corbett, who served many years as kerr-mcGee’s chairman and chief executive officer. At the time he arrived, he was a veteran geophysicist with 16 years in the oil industry, and he felt like he had found a home with a great company and a strong community accustomed to supporting one another.

after settling into his new job and his new home, it didn’t take long for Corbett to discover the United Way of Central oklahoma. kerr mcGee was involved in the nonprofit’s annual workplace campaign, so Corbett joined in, and he’s been a loyal contributor ever since.

but he didn’t stop there. Corbett has been a volunteer within the organization for many years, currently serving as a trustee. his past service includes a term as board chairman, and he also served as chairman of the United Way’s annual campaign in 2004.

perhaps the most tangible contributions Corbett made to the community and the United Way was through his leadership in securing the organization’s headquarters.

during his term as board chairman, Corbett focused on finding a building that could house the organization’s operations with enough room for future growth, and as a result of his work, the United Way moved into its new home near downtown in december 2008.

for his dedication to volunteering, leadership, philanthropy and service to the entire community, the United Way recognized Corbett the following year with the richard h. Clements lifetime achievement award.

the United Way is an important part of oklahoma City. the

organization touches all areas of need in the community, and you know your money is going to be used efficiently and effectively.

Corbett says he has many fond memories from serving the United Way, but the most fun he had was the year he served as campaign chair.

“you really got to know the other business leaders from across the metro, and you got to see the employees, how much they wanted to give back.”

meanwhile, at kerr mcGee, employees had a tradition of running annual campaigns with elaborate themes and stage shows. the fun always led to generous contributions from employees who gave hundreds of thousands of dollars each year.

“it was a time that employees could have fun and poke a little bit at the senior executives, who were always good natured about it,” Corbett said.

though he’s now retired, Corbett says he’s still involved with the United Way, working behind the scenes in an advisory role, ready to contribute when needed, but he has passed leadership to the next generation.

“i hope the younger generation gets involved and stays involved,” said Corbett, who is a platinum donor, recognized for contributing to the United Way for more than 20 years.

United Way’s tocqueville Society recognizes our most generous local philanthropic leaders for their commitment to addressing our community’s toughest challenges. tocqueville members are willing to truly invest in the welfare of our community, and they understand the significant role they fulfill by supporting and caring for our most vulnerable citizens. the spirit of giving and finding real-world solutions for our community is in their nature and engrained in their framework.

tocqueville members generously contribute $10,000 or more annually to United Way. these contributions make a lasting impact in the community and for those seeking the services of our 73 partner agencies throughout central oklahoma, Canadian and logan Counties. their gifts will leave an impact on central oklahomans for generations to come, and for that, we are thankful.

alexis de tocqueville, for whom the society is named, famously documented the american public’s unique willingness to work for the public welfare – a tendency to lend faithful support to neighbors and countrymen, especially in times of need.

the United Way of Central oklahoma’s Women’s leadership Society is a dedicated group of female philanthropists who advocate and promote social enhancements for the community through intergenerational opportunities. With an annual donation of $2,500 or more, this influential network of women leverage their time, talents and resources to create lasting change throughout our community.

the Women’s leadership Society offers a number of engagement opportunities to learn from community leaders, renowned speakers and researchers on current topics and events relevant to central oklahoma. in addition, the group hosts events throughout the year that help better the community through the collaboration of networking and philanthropy.

With a focus on developing new and continued leadership for the community, the Women’s leadership Society encourages intergenerational interaction through mentoring, educational opportunities and a shared vision of community and civic engagement.

the next generation of United Way leadership donors make up the Emerging Leaders affinity group. these young professionals not only contribute $500 or more annually, but also serve their community through invested involvement and enthusiastic leadership.

members participate in various community volunteer activities throughout the year, raising funds for partner agencies and providing meaningful engagement for clients ranging from children to senior adults.

emerging leaders enjoy networking with peers through events including a casino night, learning from respected community leaders at a luncheon series and connecting with United Way partner agencies during agency tours throughout the year.

through research on community issues, United Way of Central Oklahoma identifies emerging needs and challenges to better understand how to direct resources and collaborate to find solutions. in 2019, we partnered with the okC public Schools Compact on a collaborative initiative to address mental health in the oklahoma City public School System.

embraceokC is a district-wide initiative to support mental health improvements within oklahoma City public Schools to achieve maximum social and emotional wellbeing for students and their families. the initiative includes screening students for early

detection and intervention as well as training school staff in mental health first aid, psychological first aid and de-escalation techniques. together with other embraceokC partners, United Way of Central oklahoma is working to secure resources to support this vital initiative.

each year, the United Way of Central oklahoma celebrates the conclusion of our annual fundraising campaign at the Snowflake Gala. On Jan. 24, 2020, we joined together with more than 850 of our loyal supporters at the national Cowboy and Western heritage museum for the 18th annual event. We appreciate the generous support of our event sponsors, including the national Cowboy and Western heritage museum, as well as the boys & Girls Club Choir for a very special performance.

thanks to the dynamic leadership of campaign co-chairs, bill and Sherri lance, along with the campaign cabinet, board of directors and thousands of donors and volunteers, the 2019 campaign raised more than $17.5 million.
