Ventura Sail and Power Squadron
Volume 63 January 2019 Number 1
Cdr Steve Johnston, P
Commander’s Corner
Hello everyone.
Here we are at the end of the year, and on
the cusp of a new one. I hope the holi-
days will treat you well. We start the year
filled with new ideas, goals and commit-
ments. I look forward to seeing you at the
Annual Meeting. We will be voting on a slate
of officers for our squadron, and a chance to
discuss some new ideas on what you want to
see happen in our squadron.
We are still looking for a candidate for the
Administrative Officer. All the volunteer posi-
tions are fulfilling and allow for much collabo-
ration with the membership. Please consider
getting involved at a higher level.
Don’t forget to create and bring an appetizer
to the Annual Meeting, for enjoyment and for
judging as to who makes the most bestest
one!
We got a message from National that said
we cannot put any photos of minors in our
newsletter without the parents signing multi-
ple pages of release forms. Also before we
take photos of any event we have to an-
nounce that everyone has the option to opt-
out – no reason necessary. We are following
these guidelines.

In my last article, I touched on some of the
history of Chris Craft boats and its found-
er, Christopher Columbus Smith. This
time, I’d like to talk about some of Chris
Craft’s competitors. There were several
high-quality, innovative boat designers
who entered the market – among these
was Horace Dodge, part of the Dodge Mo-
tor Car family, who
built fast, sleek
boats using expen-
sive African ma-
hogany, some of
them powered by
aircraft engines, in
the 1920’s and
1930’s.
Then there was
Garfield Wood,
daredevil racer,
one-time collaborator with Chris Smith
and the man behind the famous Gar Wood
boats powered with 300 HP V-12 engines,
as well as the Baby Gar series of boats de-
signed for the less wealthy and adven-
turous. John Hacker was another innova-
tive American designer, who refined the
forward cockpit designs popular with the-
se boats.
Howard Lyon started his involvement with
wooden speedboats in the mid-1920’s
when he marketed and sold Gar Woods,
and then Hacker-Crafts. Unlike Wood,
however, Lyon was a true marketer and
soon became impatient with Wood’s con-
servative nature, launching his own line of
Sea-Lyon boats in the late 1920’s. His
boats were highly innovative and well-
engineered. Had only his timing been as
good; his new company perished after the
stock market crash of 1929.
Bernard Lyman immigrated to America
from Prussia as a boy. He started building
small fishing boats with lapstrake hulls to
be used in the choppy water of Lake Erie.
Finally, William and James Welch started
the Century Boat Company in the mid-
1920’s but survived
the Depression by
producing race
boats. Century
boats are known
for their beautiful
inlaid wood decks,
which also worked
as hull stiffeners.
Along with the
Americans, there
were English, Dutch
and Italian boat makers, although the
boat market in the UK and Europe has al-
ways been socio-economically different
than America. It was here that wooden in-
board runabouts that could be owned by
the common man were developed and
prospered.

- LePetit Café once again
provided the venue for our annual Holiday
Party. Forty-three members attended the
seasonal feast and enjoyed the cheer the
event provided. After dinner Commander
Steve Johnston addressed the group, fol-
lowed by Rick and Pat Metheny who host-
ed the White Elephant Gift-Swap/Steal Dice
Game. This occasion always provides a
joyous evening with fellow members and
this year was no exception!
The Ventura Harbor Parade of Lights was
on December 14 and 15. Kiss did it again!
Congratulations to Jan and Debbie Lawson
(and all their helpers) for winning 1st
Place
in the Non-Profit category. The Ventura
Sail and Power Squadron thanks you for
beautifully representing our organization!
January 26 is the date to remember for
our Annual Meeting. We will once again
hold this fun and delicious meeting at the
Channel Islands Yacht Club. I say deli-
cious because we will, as always, have our
tasty appetizer contest! Bring your yum-
my appetizer and compete for a prize! In
addition to the fun, we will hold our Annual
Meeting in which we will elect our 2019
Bridge. This is an important meeting;
please support your Power Squadron by
attending.
February 2 will be the Change of Watch.
This event will be held at the Ventura
Yacht Club where a delicious menu has
been arranged. Be sure to join the fun
and festivities as we celebrate the installa-
tion of our 2019 Bridge.
