Four Waves•Immigrants came to America in 4 waves, or phases.

•A wave is a period of time.

First Wave: 1607-1820•Less than 1 million immigrants

•Mostly English, Germans, and Africans.

Second Wave: 1820-1890• Larger number of people

immigrating.• German, Irish, Scandanavians,

Chinese.• Settle all over the U.S. (North,

Midwest, West)• As technology improves

(steamship) more immigrants.

Third Wave: 1890-1930 (what we’re studying!!!!!!!!!)• 2nd largest wave in U.S. history.

Many immigrants in a short period of time.

• Europeans: Italians, Irish, Russians, Polish, Germans, etc.

• Settle and spread all over the United States.

• Third wave has a HUGE impact on the America we know today.

Fourth wave: 1930-present• Largest wave of immigrants (became large in the 1960s)

• Latin countries (Mexico, Cuba, etc.) and Asian countries (Japan, Vietnam, etc)
