Correctly identify and explain: • who spoke the quoted words and at least a general idea of when they spoke them; • the historical and cultural significance of the quotation; • how at least two different groups we’ve discussed would respond to the quotation; and • your reaction to the quotation. 1. “You think just because you made a little money you can get a new hairdo and some expensive clothes and turn yourself into a lady. But you can’t, because you’ll never be anything but a common frump whose father lived over a grocery store and whose mother took in washing.” 2. “Let us begin by expressing our profound sorrow for what this agency has done in the past. Just like you, when we think of these misdeeds and their tragic consequences, our hearts break and our grief is as pure and complete as yours. We desperately wish that we could change this history, but of course we cannot….And while the BIA employees of today did not commit these wrongs, we acknowledge that the institution we serve did. We accept this inheritance, this legacy of racism and inhumanity. And by accepting this legacy, we accept also the moral responsibility of putting things right.” Describe in detail the relationship between two of the following sets of seemingly opposite and disconnected key terms.
• “Pie in the Sky” and “I Didn’t Raise My Boy To Be A Soldier
• “Kill the Indian, Save the Man” and Mildred Pierce
• Ellis Island and “Ain’t No Bugs On Me”
• Carrie Nation and “If” General Questions 5. What are the three components of the Liberal Consensus? 6. What does it mean when we say film reflects the hopes and fears of society? 7. What does it mean to say that decades are a social construction? 8. What mores define modernism?
