OVERVIEW
Case 30359 Sample Delivery Group (SDG) MCOEB3 from the Big John s Salvage/Hoult Roadsite consisted of six (6) soil samples analyzed for total metals by American Analytical andTesting Service (AATS) The sample set contained no field Quality Control (QC) samplesSamples were analyzed in accordance with Contract Laboratory Program (CLP) Statement ofWork (SOW) ILM04 1 through Routine Analytical Services (RAS) program
SUMMARY
All samples were successfully analyzed for all Target Analyte List (TAL) parameters Areas ofconcern with respect to data usability are listed below
Data in this case have been impacted by outliers present in laboratory blanks as well as matrixspike continuing calibration verification ICP serial dilution and Contract Required DetectionLimit (CRDL) standard analyses Details of these outliers are discussed under MinorProblems" specific samples affected are outlined in Table 1 A and qualified analytical resultsfor all samples are summarized on Data Summary Forms (DSFs)
MINOR PROBLEMS
The preparation blank had a negative result with an absolute value greater than the InstrumentDetection Limit (IDL) for antimony (Sb) Reported results less than two times (<2X) theabsolute value of the blank may be biased low The L qualifier for this outlier has beensuperseded by J on the DSFs Quantitation limits for this analyte may be biased low and havebeen qualified UL on the DSFs
AR107922
Page 2 of3
"ATContmuing Calibration (CCB) blank had a reported result greater than the IDL for selenium(Se) The reported result for this analyte in the affected sample MCOEB4 which is less than fivetimes (<5X) the blank concentration may be biased high and has been qualified "B" on the DSF
CRDL standard recoveries were high (>110%) regarding Sb, arsenic (As) beryllium (Be),cadmium (Cd), cobalt (Co), copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), Se thallium (Tl) and vanadium (V) Highrecoveries may indicate positive biases for results detected near detection limits due to anunstable baseline Reported results<2XCRDL for these analytes in affected samples may bebiased high and have been qualified "K on the DSFs unless superseded by J or "B
Matrix spike recovery was high (>125%) for lead (Pb) Reported results for this analyte may bebiased high and have been qualified K on the DSFs
The Percent Difference (%D) for the ICP serial dilution analysis was outside control limits(>10%) for zinc (Zn) Reported results regarding this analyte are estimated and have beenqualified T on DSFs
A continuing calibration verification standard recovery was high (>110%) for potassium (K)The reported result for this analyte in the affected sample, MCOEB4, may be biased high and hasbeen qualified K on the DSF
The preparation blank had a negative result with an absolute value greater than the IDL and/orthe matrix spike recovery was low while CRDL standard recoveries were high for Sb and Seproducing opposing bias effects for results detected near detection limits Reported results forthese analytes which were both less than 2X the absolute value of the blank and <2XCRDL areestimated and have been qualified J on the DSFs unless superseded by' B
NOTES
Sample MCOEB6 was reanalyzed at a ten fold (10X) dilution because the initial detectedconcentration of mercury (Hg) exceeded the instrument linear calibration range The positiveresult for this analyte in this sample was reported from the diluted analysis and annotated with a"+ symbol on the DSF by the reviewer
The laboratory duplicate result for Se was outside the contractual control limit of 20% RPD±CRDL However, the result for this analyte was within the control limit of 35% RPD±2XCRDL utilized for data validation of soil samples in Region 3 No data were qualified basedon this outlier
Data for Case 30359 SDG MCOEB3, were reviewed in accordance with National FunctionalGuidelines for Evaluating Inorganic Analyses with Modification for use within Region III
