Preface
This handbook provides information on ususal planting and harvesting dates for fresh and processingvegetables in principal producing areas. Twenty-four commercial fresh market vegetables, 3 melons, 8processing vegetables, and strawberries are included in this handbook. The information shown identifiesmajor varieties of vegetables covered in the vegetable estimating program. It updates the informationcontained in the previous edition of this handbook issued February 1977.
The Field Offices of the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service compiled the basicinformation, prepared the estimates of ususal dates, and designated the important areas of production andmajor varieties for their respective States. Growers and horticultural specialists were consulted to verifyinformation published.
Seasonal classifications are listed for the fresh market crops in each State, as in the regular programs ofvegetable reports. Classifications are determined by the season when the bulk of each crop is usuallyharvested. These seasonal groupings are as follows:
Winter: January, February, MarchSpring: April, May, JuneSummer: July, August, SeptemberFall: October, November, December
There is some overlap in the marketing seasons for individual crops because weather and economicfactors frequently disturb normal harvest schedules. Consequently, the classifications employed aregenerally less precise than the dates indicate. Data for each of the 8 principal processing crops followthe fresh market segment of the commodity. Except for spinach, estimates for processing vegetables arenot available by seasonal groups.
Harvesting dates for most vegetables refer to the period when the crop is removed from the field. Forcrops which are left in the field to cure, harvesting dates refer to the time the crop is pulled, cut, orpicked. Dates are not necessarily those of marketing or processing. For perishable crops, harvesting andmarketing or processing periods are nearly identical, but for storage crops, such as cabbage and onions, the marketing season extends beyond the end of harvest. In areas where production for processing isfrom acreage grown primarily for fresh market, harvest for processing often follows the harvest for freshmarket.
Planting dates refer to the period during which seeding or transplanting is usually done. It is recognizedthat fields may, at times, be planted before or after the normal period indicated. Dates shown do not takeinto account abnormal planting seasons caused by climatic or economic factors. The principal producingcounties are grouped by geographic areas within States. County names are listed in order of theirimportance. Where counties are of equal importance, names are listed alphabetically.
