What do we understand by the term ‘industry’?

“A group of businesses that offer the same or similar products”.

Industry Sectors

Industries can be classified into three main sectors:

- Primary

- Secondary

- Tertiary

Primary Sector

Industries that are involved in obtaining raw materials/natural resources from the earth.

These may include farming,

fishing and forestry.

Primary Sector

Also include ‘extractive industries’ as they extract natural resources from the earth such as…

…coal mining, quarrying and drilling for oil.

Secondary Sector

Once raw materials have been extracted by primary sector industries, secondary industries are involved in the second stage of the production process.

Involves taking the raw materials and turning them into finished/semi-finished products.

Example: car manufacturing, oil refinery turning oil into petrol, using timber to build houses.

Tertiary Sector

Provides a service to businesses and consumers.

Often referred to as ‘Service Sector’

Examples include banking industry, hotel industry, retail industry & communications industry.

For each of the businesses , you also need to explain what the legal structure of the business is i.e. soletrader, partnership, private-limited company (LTD) and public-limited company (PLC).

For each business, explain what sector they belong to, expand on their purpose and say what legal structure is.
