unit and lesson planning with purpose
DESCRIPTION
In this training, participants were learning more about planning with Purpose, a dimension of our instructional framework (5 Dimensions of Teaching and Learning). In this training, we were learning to plan for Purpose including standards, a unit/learning goal, learning targets, success criteria, task alignment with the targets, and identifying evidence for meeting the learning targets.TRANSCRIPT

“Pedagogy”Science of Teaching Art of Teaching
• Involves the generalizations from the research about effective teaching
• Involves the adaptations a teacher must make to accommodate his/her specific situation and style

“Pedagogy”
• Read excerpts about the art and science of teaching.
• As a group, discuss the readings. Discussion ideas:
The Art and Science of Teaching
• Thinking about your own teaching practices and those of your peers, what habits would you consider characteristic of the “art” of teaching?
• Can you think of a specific situation where your professional practice drew from both the art of teaching and the research on teaching?
• What are the pitfalls of teaching that is all art? What are the pitfalls of teaching that is all science?

Just do it
“Teaching is not rocket science…”
Good teachers in any age have found teaching demanding. It involves not only the science of teaching but the art of building complex relationships that establish trust, engender respect and encourage young people to take risks in order to grow and to learn continually.
“It is, in fact, far more complex and demanding work than rocket science.” (Richard Elmore, Harvard Graduate School of Education)
