Activity 2 Writing and Understanding FrenchChoose the correct season for each month below. Write it down in French-(If you’re not sure, look at back at Unit 5 Workbook for a list of the months!)

l’été - the summer → en été - in summerl’automne – the autumn → en automne - in autumnl’hiver - the winter → en hiver in winterle printemps - the spring → au printemps – in spring

1 janvier. C’est en …………………………..2 avril. C’est au …………………………..3 septembre. C’est en ……………………………4 juillet. C’est en …………………………….5 août. …………………………………………...6 décembre. …………………………………………...7 mars. …………………………………………...8 juin …………………………………………...9 octobre …………………………………………...10 février …………………………………………...

Now fill in your opinions about the seasons in French.J’aime...................................................Je n’aime pas .....................................

4Likes and dislikes are in Unit 4 Workbook!

6 Il y a du brouillard.

7 Il fait froid.

8 Il fait chaud.

9 Le ciel est gris.

10 Il y a du vent.

Je préfère .........................................Je déteste..........................................J’adore.................................................

Accents - Whenever you meet a new word, your French teacher will note whether or not it is written with an accent. These often tell you how to say the letter so you should spell it that way too.Make sure you always remember – é sounds [ay]è sounds [fed] Try saying - caféç sounds [ss] télé

pèreça vaje préfèredécembregarçonmétéo (weather forecast)

Numbers 70 → 100Activity 3 Understanding French.

Match up the following temperatures in numbers and figures. In Canada (where the weather is very hot in summer and very cold in winter), they use Fahrenheit for temperatures and of course, the province of Québec in Canada is French-speaking.....

soixante- dixquatre-vingtsquatre-vingt-douzequatre-vingt-dixsoixante- seizequatre-vingt-seizequatre-vingt-dix-neufsoixante-quinzesoixante et onze

Activity 4 Writing French. Copy down these numbers as words in French

Activity 5 Work with a friend/ brother /sister/grown-up. How would people tell you their age in French if they were........

Verbs Being able to use and recognise verbs in French is very important. Make sure you spend enough time on these exercises at home so that you feel confident!

Lots of verbs follow the same pattern as ‘jouer’ to play

je joue I play or I am playingtu joues you play or you are playing

il joue he plays or he is playingelle joue she plays or she is playing

nous jouons we play or we are playingvous jouez you play or you are playingils jouent they play or they are playing (male or mixed)elles jouent they play or they are playing (females)

Activity 6 Understanding French Look back ‘jouer’ and at the list of verbs at the beginning of the Workbook to help you work out what these sentences mean. Write the meaning in English.

1 Ils jouent au football...................................................................

2 Je regarde la télé dans le salon...................................................................

3 Nous tapons sur l’ordinateur...................................................................

4 Ils surfent sur Internet...................................................................

5 Je travaille dans le jardin...................................................................

6 Vous aimez la musique?..................................................................

7 Nous habitons en Ecosse...................................................................

8 Je reste à la maison...................................................................

9 Tu écoutes la radio?..................................................................

10 Marc téléphone à Daniel...................................................................

Did you notice number 10? ‘Marc’ was not on our list with ‘jouer’ above. However instead of saying ‘Marc’ we could say ‘he’ and so it takes the same verb as ‘he’.

Activity 7 Write down the missing letter or letters. Do the same as number 10 in Activity 6 but think carefully!1 Daniel téléphon......... 4 Daniel et Marc téléphon..............2 Marie jou.......... 5 Marie et Sophie jou...............3 Papa regard.......... 6 Papa et Maman regard...............

Activity 8 Writing FrenchLook back at ‘jouer’. Add on the correct endings for these verbs...

1 je jou..........2 tu regard..........3 il pens..........4 elle rentr..........

7

5 Stéphanie rentr..........6 nous rest..........7 vous travaill..........8 ils ador..........9 elles habit..........10 Maman et Papa cherch..........

Activity 9 THIS IS DIFFICULT! Concentrate hard!!!!! Use the list of verbs at the beginning of the Workbook + ‘jouer’ above to help you put these verbs into French....

Example - I stay = Je reste(NOTE ‘je’ turns into –j’- before a vowel or vowel-sound J’entre, j’habite, j’écoute...)

1 I hate Je détestE2 We stay ...........................................................3 I phone ...........................................................4 He thinks ...........................................................5 She lives ...........................................................6 We hate ...........................................................7 You (tu) like ...........................................................8 You (vous) like...........................................................9 We arrive ...........................................................10 He listens ...........................................................11 She types ...........................................................12 They (m) like ...........................................................13 They live ...........................................................14 We watch ...........................................................15 Marc works ...........................................................

IMPORTANT – The verb JOUER (TO PLAY) is followed by à la, à l’, au or aux if you are playing a sport or a game. It is followed by de la, de l’, du or des if you are playing a musical instrument.

Activity 10- WritingThink of some famous musicians and say what instrument they play. Do some research on the internet if you can’t think of anyone!

Example – Elton John joue du piano.

Activity 11 – Reading and Understanding

As you will have noticed, to talk about some sports we use the verb “jouer” to play. Generally speaking, to talk about a sport or game where you play against an opponent and try to score points or goals, use “jouer”. Have you also notice that these sports required the use of a ball?

However, for other sports and activities, use “faire”.

Faire

This is an irregular verb meaning “to do” or “to make”. We sometimes use it in French to mean that we take part in certain sporting or leisure activities.

a) b) c) d) e)

f) g) h) i)

Example: Je joue au rugby. = e = I play rugby. 1) Je joue au foot.2) Nous jouons au basket.3) Ils jouent au volley.4) Elle joue au badminton.5) Elles jouent au tennis de table.6) Tu joues au hockey.7) Tiger Woods joue au golf.8) Il joue au tennis.
