The U-2 Incident Election of 1960
• On May 1, 1960 a US spy plane was shot down over the Soviet Union.
• This incident revealed that the US was spying on the Soviet Union.
• Damaged the relationship between the Soviet Union and the United States.
• Republican Richard Nixon ran against Democrat John F. Kennedy.
• Debates between the two candidates were televised.
• Kennedy looked better on TV than Nixon. Many believe Kennedy’s TV appearance helped him win the election.

Bay of Pigs Invasion
April 1961
CIA supported a Cuban led rebellion against communist leader Fidel Castro.
The rebels were defeated and Cuba strengthened their ties with the Soviet
Union.

US Space Program • In October 1957, the
Soviet Union launched a satellite known as Sputnik into space.
• US responded with creation of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in 1958
• President Kennedy announced a national goal to put a man on the moon by the end of the 1960s.
• In July 1969, America landed on the moon.

Let’s Review•The US continued to have issues with the
Soviet Union such as the U-2 Incident and the Cuban Missile Crisis.

•President Kennedy was assassinated in 1963 and Vice President Johnson became president.
