Part I: Multiple Choice

• For the multiple choice portion of the test, you will be asked questions about the texts

you have read.

• Use the Quick Checks as a way to review.

• Use the study guide on the Class Website.

Part II: Essay Questions

• ALL essay answers must be submitted to CheckMyWork before

turning in your open book assessment.

• The CheckMyWork report link, along with the answer, must be

pasted into the assessment answer box.

• Since the essay questions are provided to students ahead of

time in the unit test study guides posted on the Class Website,

all students have the opportunity to write out their responses

before opening the assessment.

Essay Questions

• Answer ALL PARTS of a multi-part question.

• Use correct grammar and punctuation.

• Write at LEAST 3-5 sentences. Only writing ONEsentence is not acceptable.

• Give specific evidence by providing examples from the text.

Essay Question

• Choose two of the following essay prompts.

• Respond to each in a paragraph.

• Answers should be written in complete sentences.

• FULLY explain your answer and give specific details for

support.

Prompt I. In both "Marriage Is a Private Affair" and "A Meeting in the Dark," young men fret that their fathers will disapprove of their potential wives. Compare these two stories by looking at how the personalities of the young men and their fathers help to shape the eventual outcomes.

• Unpack the Prompt:

• The young man frets that his father will disapprove of their potential wives.

• How do the personalities of the young man and his father shape the eventual outcome?

• "A Meeting in the Dark"

• The young man frets that his father will disapprove of their potential wives.

• How do the personalities of the young man and his father shape the eventual outcome?

• Ex: Although both fathers oppose their sons’ choice because of their Christian beliefs, their

relationships with their sons are very different.

• Okeke is a kind-hearted man who believes he must oppose his son’s choice of a wife outside the tribe on principle. However, he becomes reconciled to the marriage when he realizes how the rift in the family hurts his grandsons. John’s father is stern and unable to forgive weakness in himself or his son; John’s fear of him is one factor that drives the young man to attack his pregnant girlfriend.

Prompt II. Examine how white people and black people regard each other in"No Witchcraft for Sale," "The Moment Before the Gun Went Off," and "The Prisoner Who Wore Glasses." How do they help to both teach and support each other, and how do they fail? Think about what each group is trying to protect and when it withholds something from the other.

• Ex: Gideon and the Farquars have a friendly relationship based on affection for Teddy and shared Christian values. However, the limits of that relationship are exposed when Teddy begins to treat Gideon as a servant when Gideon refuses to share his traditional love.
