Unit 5 – Lesson 3
Protists
• Protists are single cell organisms• Can be producers and consumers• They are known as they “odds n ends” of life.
– Mushroom like– Plant like – Animal like
Fungilike Protists
• Slime mold– Consume once living plants– Decomposers
Plantlike Protists• Algae
– Algae provides food for many animals and animal-like protists. They are a staple of aquatic ecosystems.
• Largest producers of OXYGEN thru PHOTOSYNTHESIS
Plantlike Protists– Algae can also help remove pollution – the use pollution
as a food source and can over produce.
All About Algae
• Is algae good or bad?
• What are we using algae for in today’s society?
Oligotrophic Lake Eutrophic Lake
Animallike Protists
• Paramecium – has cilia – short hair-like projections
Animallike Protists
• Amoeba – moves with a pseudopod (foot like projection)
Protozoans• Protozoans are important members of ecosystems.
– Decompose matter in the environment– Can cause disease
• malaria
Fungi• Fungi are multicellular consumers• They consume their food through absorption of
dead organisms
Fungi
• There are four types of fungi:– sac fungi– zygote fungi– club fungi– imperfect fungi
Club Fungi
• Example: Mushrooms
Zygote Fungi
• Example: Mold on bread – grow in moist areas
Sac Fungi
• Example: Yeast Fungi, Diaper Infection Fungi
Imperfect Fungi
• Examples: fungi in Blue Cheese, Athletes foot
