SELECTED HEALTHCARE SYSTEM
4.2 COMPLEMENTARY/ALTENATIVE MEDICINE
LEARNING OUTCOME
After completing this unit, student should be able to:
1.Describe complementary/alternative medicine as a group ofdiverse medical and health care systems, practices, and products, that are not currently part of conventional medicine
Have you ever used one of these non-traditional practices?
Tai-Chi, drinking green tea/any herbal remedies, Massage Therapy, Aromatherapy, Acupuncture, Acupressure and etc
INTRODUCTION• Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is the term for medical
products and practices that are not part of standard care. Standard care is whatmedical doctors, doctors of osteopathy, and allied health professionals, such asnurses and physical therapists, practice.
• Complementary medicine is used together with standard medical care. Anexample is using acupuncture to help with side effects of cancer treatment.
• The claims that CAM treatment providers make can sound promising. However, researchers do not know how safe many CAM treatments are or howwell they work. Studies are underway to determine the safety and usefulness ofmany CAM practices.
Complementary / Alternative Medicine (CAM)
• Complementary medicine • Used together with conventional medicine
• Also called allopathy, Western, mainstream, orthodox, biomedicine
• Alternative medicine • In place of conventional medicine• Generally incorporates a holistic approach, focus on treating
whole body and mind• Changes as some CAM practices become more mainstream• Used widely throughout the world• For example; using special diet to treat cancer instead of
undergoing surgery or chemotheraphy.
ALTERNATIVE MEDICAL SYSTEMS
• Naturopathy• Restore health rather than cure disease• Diet, clinical nutrition, homeopathy, acupuncture, herbal
medicine, hydrotherapy, manipulation, light therapy, therapeutic counseling, pharmacology
- e.g Homeopathy- “Like cures like”- Herbal medicine, minerals, and chemicals in diluted forms
Example of Complimentary/Alternative
medicine- Aromatherapy- Acupuncture- Homeopathy- Flower remedy therapy

ACUPUNCTURE
ACUPUNCTURE
• (from Latin, acus (needle) and punctura (to puncture)) is a form of alternative medicine and a key component of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) involving thin needles being inserted into the body.
• Acupuncture is generally safe when done by an appropriately trained practitioner using clean needle technique and single-use needles
CLINICAL PRACTICE
• Acupuncture is a form of alternative medicine. It is commonly used for pain relief
• including low back pain, shoulder stiffness, and knee pain.• Traditional acupuncture involves needle insertion, moxibustion, and
cupping therapy
NEEDLES
• Acupuncture needles are typically made of stainless steel, making them flexible and preventing them from rusting or breaking
• Needles vary in length between 13 to 130 millimetres with shorter needles used near the face and eyes, and longer needles in areas with thicker tissues; needle diameters vary from 0.16 mm (0.006 in) to 0.46 mm (0.018 in),[49] with thicker needles used on more robust patients
RELATED PRACTICE
• Acupressure, a non-invasive form of bodywork, uses physical pressure applied to acupressure points by the hand or elbow, or with various devices.
• Acupuncture is often accompanied by moxibustion, the burning of cone-shaped preparations of moxa (made from dried mugwort) on or near the skin, often but not always near or on an acupuncture point.
• Cupping therapy is an ancient Chinese form of alternative medicine in which a local suction is created on the skin practitioners believe this mobilizes blood flow in order to promote healing.
•Acupuncture can release:
1. Pain2. Low back3. Migraine and headache4. Allergic5. Cancer related condition6. Dyspepsia (indigestion)7. Stroke
COMPLEMENTARY ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE
CHIROPRACTIC
What is Chiropractic?
¨ Chiropractic is a health care profession. Chiropractors perform adjustments (manipulations) to the spine or other parts of the body. The goal is to correct alignment problems, ease pain, and support the body's natural ability to heal itself.
¨ Manipulative and Body-Based practice of CAM interventions and therapies.
¨ Profession which focuses on dx, tx, and preventing mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system, their effects on the nervous system and general health.
History of Chiropractic
¨ Chiropractic- means “done by hand”, referring to manipulation of the spine.¤Greek words cheir (hand) and praxis (action)
¨ Chiropractic is a form of spinal manipulation, one of the oldest healing practices.¤ Spinal manipulation was described by Hippocrates
in ancient Greece.
Cervical Spine ManipulationBefore and After
Conclusions?
¨ Research studies are ongoing¤ Key area of research is the basic science of what happens in the body such
as the cells and nerves when specific treatments are given.
¨ Risk of complications from adjustments of low-back pain appear very low, but risks increase for adjustments of the neck.
HOMEOPATHY
NATUROPATHY
NO SIDE EFFECT
EXIT SLIP QUESTIONS
1. LIST 3 MODES APPLICATION OF AROMATHERAPHY?2. STATE THE EXAMPLES OF NATUROPATHY?3. WHAT IS THE CHIROPRACTIC MEDICINE?4. EXPLAIN THE PRINCIPLE OF HOMEOPATHY
PRACTICES?5. DESCRIBE ACUPUNTURE TREATMENT?
ANSWER:• 3 mode of Aromatherapy application – aerial diffusion (for environmental
fragrance / aerial disinfection), direct inhalation (for respiratory, disinfection, expectorant) , topical application (for massage, bath, therapeutics care)
• Examples of naturopathy - Diet, clinical nutrition, homeopathy, acupuncture, herbal medicine, hydrotherapy, manipulation, light therapy, therapeutic counseling, pharmacology
• Chiropractic- is a form of alternative medicine concerned with thediagnosis and treatment of mechanical disorder of the musculoskeletalsystems, especially spine. (Disorder affects general health via the nervoussystem)
• Homeopathy doctrine – “like cure like”-a claim that substance that causethe symptom of disease in healthy people would cure the similarsymptoms of sick people.
