Assignment titleConstruction methods, techniques and Safety Assessments of Substructures (1 of 2)
Purpose of this assignment
By carrying out this assignment, learners will understand the methods and techniques of the
construction of substructures including earthwork excavation work, assessing the risk and solving the
problems arising from civil engineering activities.
Scenario
Your role is a project engineer in a construction company. You responsibilities are to manage for the
creating of structures with the appropriate construction methods and techniques and also to design the
solutions for the problems arising from construction activities according to the legal framework. So you
need to understand and apply the wide range of construction methods and techniques, current health
and safety regulations (CDM Regulations 2007). The following series of tasks are set to test your
knowledge and understanding of construction methods and techniques in construction and the built
environment.
Task 1a : (LO 1: 1.1)
For the project which you are responsible, excavation work is processed by using equipment. Therefore,
you should understand the use of earth moving equipment to be able to choose the appropriate
equipment.
Explain the use of trenchers, bulldozers, wheel loaders and dump trucks.
Task 1b: (LO 1: 1.2)
The project is built with two basements and so deep excavations work will be needed. You have to
choose and decide the proper method to be safe and productive.
Discuss appropriate techniques of deep excavations which are safe and productive in
construction.
For D3, you must discuss the techniques with your convergent and lateral thinking.
Task 1c (LO 1: 1.3)
![Page 4: Unit 33-CET 2015(1 of 2)](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022072110/563db960550346aa9a9cc5bb/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
For deep excavation work of your project, you have to arrange the safety for construction workers such
as ground stability and ground water. Therefore, you have to know how to provide the safety
arrangements for these activities.
Illustrate the safety arrangements of excavation for ground stability and ground water.
For M3, your illustration must be accurate arrangements and technical language.
Task 2a (LO 2: 2.1 and 2.2)
For the purpose of basement, the project will be constructed with mat foundation according to structural
design. Bored pile are installed under mat foundation. As a project engineer, you should know the
construction methods of foundations piling system and ground stabilisation.
Describe methods of constructing complex foundations and explain techniques used in installation of piling systems and ground stabilisation activities.
For M2, you must synthesis and processed your descriptions.
Task 2b (LO2: 2.2)
There is a public drainage along the fence of building. You need to provide the culvert for the purpose of
entrance. Therefore you have to know how to construct the culvert. Moreover, construction of drainage
and utilities are also needed to be understand.
Illustrate constructions methods used in utilities, drainage and brick culverts.
Task 3a (LO 4: 4.1)
In the construction and built environment, risk assessment for each activities are useful for employer to
measure the risk level. As a project engineer, you have to understand and be able to access the safety
arrangements for construction activities.
Access the safety arrangements for construction activities such as excavation and working
in confined spaces.
For D2, you must briefly describe for safety arrangements for unexpected hazards.
Task 3b (LO 4 : 4.2 and 4.3)
Understanding the roles and responsibilities according to regulations will be helpful to reduce the risk in
construction site. You have to be proficiency with updated construction regulations.
Discuss about construction (Design and Management) Regulation 2007 and explain the role
and responsibilities of planning supervisor.
