Unit 3 Report Text Tell me about it

What is a report ?A report is written for a clear purpose and to a particular audience. Specific information and evidence and presented, analyzed and applied to a particular problem or issue. The information is presented in a clearly structured format making use of sections and headings so that the information is easy to locate and follow. Reports can be used in textbooks, encyclopedias, reference books, etc. A report text has its own generic structure, having two components: (1) general classification and (2) description. Reports are principally not the same as descriptive text focuses on a specific things and its specific features; a report deals with things in general.

PIRANHA FISH

Piranha fish are the fiercest animals in the world. They live in the fresh water rivers of South America, from Venezuela to Northern Argentina. This fish hunt in groups, called schools. They usually eat another fish smaller than themselves. Sometimes Piranhas will attack and eat each other.

There are about 18 kinds of Piranha fish. Only four kinds attack man. Piranhas have large head and short thick bodies. They are usually about 20 cm (9 inches) long but one kind can be as much as 60 cm (two feet). It lives in the San Francisco River from Eastern Brazil. It is one of the most dangerous fish.

The most noticeable thing about Piranha fish is the large mouth. The mouth has a lot of triangular teeth with sharp point. The point piece the skin of the prey. The razor sharp edges of the teeth chop out pieces of flesh. The teeth of the upper and lower jaws fit together like scissors. The muscles moving the jaws are big and very powerful.

On the back of Piranha fish there is a ridge called a keel. There is another keel running along its belly. The tail is slender and muscular. Its tail fins are broad. All these features help the Piranha to swim fast through the water. The Piranha fish eat a large South American rat-like animal, called a Capybara, weighing 50 kilos (100 ponds) to a skeleton in less than 60 seconds.

Read the text carefully then answer the questions based on the text.A tornado is a violently rotating column of air which is in contact with both a cumulonimbus cloud or, in rare cases, a cumulus cloud base and the surface of the earth.

Tornadoes come in many sizes but are typically in the form of a visible condensation funnel, whose narrow end touches the earth and is often encircled by a cloud of debris.

Most tornadoes have wind speeds of 110 mph (177 km/h) or less, are about 250 feet (75 m) across, and travel a few miles (several kilometers) before disappears.

Some reach wind speeds of more than 300 mph (480 km/h), stretch more than a mile (1.6 km) across, and stay on the ground for dozens of miles (more than 100 km). Although tornadoes have been observed on every continent except Antarctica, most occur in the United States. They also commonly occur in southern Canada, south central and eastern Asia, east-central South America, Southern Africa, north-western and central Europe, Italy, western and south-eastern Australia, and New Zealand.

Activity 6

Read the following text. Then find some difficult words and make sentences based on the words.

Earthquake is a sudden shaking of the earth's surface that often causes a lot of damage. It is the result of a sudden release of stored energy in the Earth's crust that creates seismic waves. Earthquakes may happen naturally or as a result of human activities. Smaller earthquakes can also be caused by volcanic activity, landslides, mine blasts, and nuclear experiments.

At the Earth's surface, earthquakes can be seen from the shaking or displacement of the ground. Sometimes, they cause tsunamis, which may lead to loss of life and damage of property. There are two types of earthquake that occurs naturally, they are tectonic and volcanic earthquakes. Tectonic earthquakes are earthquakes that are caused by tectonic plates getting stuck and putting a strain on the ground. The strain becomes so great that rocks give way by breaking and sliding along fault planes. Volcanic earthquakes are earthquakes which are caused by the movement of magma in volcanoes. In volcanic regions earthquakes may be caused both by tectonic faults and by the movement of magma in volcanoes. Such earthquakes can be an early warning of volcanic eruptions.

The size of an earthquake is usually reported using the Richter scale or a related Moment scale. Earthquakes which are 3 on the Richter scale or lower are hard to notice. Whereas, those which are 7 on the Richter scale causes serious damage over large areas.

USE 1 Repeated Actions

Use the Simple Present to express the idea that an action is repeated or usual. The action can be a habit, a hobby, a daily event, a scheduled event or something that often happens. It can also be something a person often forgets or usually does not do.

Activity 7

a. Write the correct form of the given verb. Use only the present perfect tense

Examples:

The bus does not arrive at 11 AM, it arrives at 11 PM.

When do we board the plane?

The party starts at 8 o'clock.

When does class begin tomorrow?

USE 4 Now (Non-Continuous Verbs)

She is not here now.

He needs help right now.

What is a kangaroo?

A kangaroo is an animal found only in Australia, although it has a smaller relative, called a wallaby, which lives on the Australian island of Tasmania and also in New Guinea.

Kangaroos are marsupials. A female kangaroo has an external pouch on the front of her body. A baby kangaroo is very tiny when it is born, and it crawls at once into this pouch where it spends its first five month of life.

Kangaroos eat grass and plants. They have short front legs, but very long and very strong back legs and a tail. These they use for sitting up on and for jumping. Kangaroos have been known to make forward jumps of over eight meters, and leap across fences more than three meters high. They can also run at speeds of over 45 kilometers per hours

The largest kangaroos are the Great Grey Kangaroo and the Red Kangaroo. Adults grow to a length of 1.60 meters and weight over 90 kilos.

Activity 10Work in pairs. Rearrange the jumbled paragraphs into a good and meaningful text. Then, put it into the chart.

A common windmill consists of a high steel tower on top of which revolves an air motor. The parts of the air motor are fixed onto the wind shaft and are automatically held into the wind or furled according to whether water should be pumped of if the mill needs to be protected from the wind.

An ordinary 8-foot windwheel develops less than 1/10 horsepower.

A windmill is a machine for converting wind energy into mechanical energy.

A windmill is used for grinding grain, pumping water for irrigation and in the past few years for generating electricity.

Now, Ill tell you about a computer. A computer system is made up of a number of inter-connected systems. The heart of the computer is the central processor unit called CPU. Are you following me? Okay, let me continue. The CPU perform the necessary calculations and controls the input and output units. The CPU is divided into three parts. The memory unit stores the data and programs. The control unit selects data and instructions from the memory unit, interprets them, and controls the calculations. And the third is the arithmetic unit. It performs addition, subtraction, and compares data.
