On the way to the famous Baiyang Waterfall, don’t forget to look up when you are in the tunnels. There might be bats above you. Make sure to visit Swallow Grotto and the Tunnel of Nine Turns too. UNIT 3 Hualien Road Trip
My friends Anthony and Bryan came to visit me in Taiwan. I took them to Hualien. After we arrived, we rented scooters. Then, we rode to Taroko Gorge. It’s in the second largest national park in Taiwan. One place we went to was Swallow Grotto. Swallows sleep in small holes in the cliffs. That’s how it got its name. The place had a beautiful view of the river.

My First Time in Taiwan
UNIT 3 Hualien Road Trip
A person’s first days in Taiwan can be a strange experience.
Many things in Taiwan can seem very unusual to a first-time visitor. The first thing I noticed was all the scooters. It was a little scary to walk around. Just crossing the street felt dangerous.
Name: Mike Corsini Hometown: San Rafael, California Sign: Leo Hobbies: Playing basketball, traveling, hiking, and reading
UNIT 3 Hualien Road Trip
Taiwan’s night markets were also a new experience.
Some of the food there, such as pig blood cake, stinky
tofu, and chicken hearts, might not look or smell good.
One Web site even named pig blood cake the world’s
most unusual food, but I think it tastes OK. It is made of
blood and rice, and is covered with peanut powder.
The way garbage is collected is also different. Most
Taiwanese garbage trucks play the famous Polish song
“A Maiden’s Prayer” when they stop to collect trash. In
America, only ice cream trucks play music. So when I
first heard a Taiwanese garbage truck, I remembered
buying ice cream when I was a boy.
UNIT 3 Hualien Road Trip
In addition, convenience stores in Taiwan are really convenient – they’re everywhere! The island has more than 9,000 convenience stores. It’s easier to find a convenience store in Taiwan than in any other country.
UNIT 3 Hualien Road Trip
