Which countries will be looking at in this unit?
How do you know?
If you could go anywhere in the world where would it be?
Read the passage below: I left the hotel in London just like Phileas Fogg. Phileas Fogg
was a character in a book called ‘Around the World in 80
Days’. He travelled the whole world in just 80 days and on
my journey. I hope to do the same thing! It’s a wet, musty
morning. I’ve had three and a half hours sleep and the only
thing I am jealous of is that Phileas Fogg didn’t really have to
do this, but I do!
I have tried to follow in his footsteps and pack light. I packed
six shirts, sis pairs of socks, six pairs of underpants, three t-
shirts, a towel, a pair of swimming trunks, a short sleeved
sweater, three pairs of light trousers, a change of shoes, a
jacket and a tie, a hat and one or two heavy and serious
books for when I go on long sea journeys.

Fogg’s footsteps’, 1988
What would
you pack?

f. He took a sleeping bag with him

This morning the hotel smells of old fish, empty wine glasses and beer bottles from the
night before. I can see no one eating the sort of breakfast Phileas Fogg had enjoyed the
day he left; although you could be surprised if you saw someone with a boiled fish and a
berry tart for breakfast! It was a very strange world back in the 1800’s though, wasn’t
it? Anyways, I had finished my breakfast and was ready to make my way to the train
platform.
