Section 2 and 3 : Be able to prepare moving image material for editing and be able to edit moving image material.


Task 1: Rushes LogThis task will help you decide which clips will be most suitable to meet the clients brief. Rushes logs will show a full appreciation of the possibilities and limitations of shots. All paperwork will be clear and organised to a near-professional standard.

You must check each rush and offer a description of the action in each clip. In your description you MUST use camera specific terminology to describe the shot. You must then decide whether this clip could be used in the final construction and give a reason as to why you have made that decision.

Evidence will be the completed table.

scoring a try and a slight celebration afterwards. It is filmed by a hand held camera, which may have made the quality of the shot less clear. Also it is an establishing shot because it shows the place in which the action is taking place.

Yes I may use this in my promotional video if I need to include any information about the sports department.

00002.mp4 This is a point of view shot looking at a selection of cakes from the café. It is also done by a hand held camera, which means the quality is not the best it could have been.

No I wont be using this because the quality is not at the best standard and in my opinion I don’t think it will make people want to come to the college.

00007.mp4 This is a medium long shot of a teacher teaching a lesson of chemistry. The action is a little to the left of the camera and you can see the teacher teaching out to his class and not to the camera.

Yes I could use this piece of action because it shows a lesson in progress and this could interest people to the college because you can see how lessons are taught.

0008.mp4 A hand held camera captures this footage and there is a slight pan shot of the close up sign at the beginning of the action. As the camera is panning the focus is slightly lost. Then there is a zoon out to how the menus of Costa and then zooms back in to the sign.

Yes I could use part of this clip to show new students to the college of the facilities we have to offer within your free time, lunchtime and you break times.

0009.mp4 This starts off with a close up shot of the coffee beans. It then zooms out and moves the hand held camera down to show the selection screen and someone making something

No I don’t think this clip will be appropriate for my promo video because it is quite slow paced and I don’t think it is relevant to the college.

00032.mp4 This is an over the shoulder shot of a music tech student. You can’t see much of what they are doing and the back of his head seems to be one of the main focuses of the shot because there is nothing else going on.

No I won’t be using this clip because there is nothing going on and it wont show off the college to its full potential.

00033 (1).mp4 This shot shows the other side to the one above and you can see what the student is doing. The shot is quite still and it is in focus.

Yes I could use this in my promo video to show a different subject we do within the college but because there is not a lot going on it would only be a short clip of it.

00033 (2).mp4 In this video it is a medium long shot and it shows student in action working the lungs of the human body. There is a zoom in on the body an then a zoom back out to show the students again.

Yes This could be used to show new student and parents some of the things the college offers students to learn. In this case biology.

00033.mp4 This is a pan shot of the seating area upstairs. You can tell this is captured using a tripod because the action is smooth and the quality is good.

Yes I could use this in my final promo video to show people the excellent facility’s we have for students in free time, breaks and lunch ties.

00034.mp4 This is a medium close up of a students face whilst getting interviewed by a member of staff. The person doesn’t seem convincing and it is like the words have been put into his mouth.

No I wont be using this clip in my edit because if people wanted to know about the teaching staff in the college you want someone convincing and someone who looks like they really mean it.

00035.mp4 This is a medium close up of a student getting interviewed. He doesn’t look too convincing about what he is saying and he is talking too fast.

No I wont be using this in my promo video because the student was speaking too fast and to be featured on a promo video you need to be able to talk clearly and slowly. Also the student didn’t look too convincing when talking about the teaching staff.

00036.mp4 This is also a medium close up of a student being interviewed and the quality is good. However they look as if they don’t mean what they are saying and they are saying it

No I wont be using this because she also doesn’t look convincing enough to attract people to come to the college.

computers in the library. It is 10 seconds long but nothing happens. The quality of this is not the best and you can tell it is captured by using a hand-held camera because it is a little bit shaky at points.

No I will not be using this because it doesn’t show off the college to its best potential. It shows another part of the college however its not the best clip of that area.

00053.mp4 This starts by using a shallow focus with the goal post in focus and the field out of focus. It then shows a girl’s football match. You cant really see what is happening because the camera doesn’t follow the action well.

Yes I could use a small part of this as a quick cut but I won’t be using the full clip because the quality is not the best.

00071.mp4 This shows the start of a rugby match. There is not much really going on. You can see the camera is quite shaky at first but then it zooms out from seeing the boys and it pans to the left to follow what is going on, on screen.

No I don’t think I will be using this piece of action because although it shows the college offers different types of sports I think if you where to have a shot of rugby it could have been of better quality and had a little bit more going on.

00078.mp4 This has a pan shot of the gym facility the college has to offer. This is mainly the weights and machines to help you gain strength.

Yes I am going to use a section of this video because it shows some of the fantastic facilities our college has to offer to new students wanting to come to the college.

00085.mp4 This shows a student using the facilities in the gym and using a part of the equipment. It is filmed by a hand held camera

Yes I could use this as a snapshot to show people the facilities we have to offer and they are there to be used.

00087.mp4 This is an establishing shot of the front of the college building. It starts by a zoom in and then zooms back out.

Yes I could use this video on the zoom in because it shows the college building and once it is zoomed in I could cut to another shot.

00088.mp4 This starts by a close up of a training machine in the gym. The quality is not the best. It then zooms out to show more equipment however at the end of the video it goes out of focus

No I may choose to use this if I have enough time suggested by the client. I could use a quick snap of this but I won’t be using the full video.

No I wont be using this as in a promo video you want to show off parts of the college. As you cant see what the student is doing it wouldn’t be ideal to show off the college to new students and parents.

00104.mp4 This is a high angle, over the shoulder shot of the student doing the same procedure as the two above. The quality is good and you can see what the student is doing.

No I could use this because you can see exactly what the student is doing and it could attract people who are interested in the subject.

00108.mp4 This clip is very short and it is took as if you where looking along the object. The quality is good but as I said it is only 1 second long.

No I wont be using this clip because I feel like the other footage I have of this department is stronger then this clip. This doesn’t show off the college in any way so I feel it will be irrelevant.

00109.mp4 This starts by showing the student in the workshop. It then tilts down to show what the student is doing. The quality is okay but not the best.

No I could use something like this because it shows what the students have to wear when using machines like this and it shows what he is doing. Also the camera movement makes the shot more interesting to watch.

00113.mp4 This shows a close up of another piece of equipment they use in the product design department. The quality is good and the camera isn’t shaky.

No I could use this to show a different aspect of the department as this may interest new students and parents on what the college has in store for them if the want to take the subject.

00114.mp4 This starts with a close up of the piece of equipment in the product design area but the quality is not the best as the object is moving quite fast. It then zooms out to how the full extent of the laser cutter.

No I wont be using this clip as I feel like this clip is not the strongest to show of the department.

No I wont be using this clip as the quality’s not great and no one wants to see a bad


focus so the quality could have been better. The cut object then falls from the middle of the wood.

00132.mp4 This shows students working in a science lab. They are carrying out an experiment. The camera is hand-held when shooting this clip because the quality is not great as it is shaky quite a lot. You can see more of the desk then the actual experiment.

No I wont be using this clip as the quality is not great and it doesn’t show the best parts of the chemistry department.

00146.mp4 This shows a quick tilt down to show a student drilling through a piece of wood. The quality is not great.

No I wont be using this clip as the pace is too fast and the actual footage is not great.

00147.mp4 This shows an over the shoulder shot of someone drilling through the wood. The shot goes out of focus near the end

No I wont be using this clip because it goes out of focus and it wont be ideal because you can actually clearly see what is going on.

00149.mp4 This is a tilt camera movement down from the medium close up of the student’s head to show that he is drilling a piece of wood.

No I wont be including this clip because you cant really see what the student is doing because the quality at the end is not the best.

MVI_1034.MOV This clip shows a pan shot of students working on the mac computers. The quality of this action is not the best because you cant see the computers and the students clearly it is blurry.

No This clip wont be appropriate to use within my promo video because the quality is not at the best standard it could be. People watching will want to see high quality footage and this isn’t.

Art.mp4 This shows a student painting. There is a zooms in and out through out this clip. The quality of the clip is good. The clip is however long.

Yes I could use this to show some of the things the college has to use. The clip will be cut shorter to a key part of this clip as it is quite long and the shots I need to use are fast and snappy.

Awards Evening 2015.mp4

This starts with a time-lapse of people filling the seats in the theatre. It then cuts to the front of the college and shows an establishing shot of the college whilst using a pan camera movement. There is also a zoom out at the end of this clip to display the full front of the college.

Yes I could use parts of this clip because it shows different activities within the college. This could interest parents as well as students because it sows an event they could attend.

Capture4.mp4 This shows the enrolment Yes I could use this clip near the


section of the college website. It shows you how to get to the page and it scrolls through what you need to fill in.

end of the video because it shows students and parents how they can apply to the college and what steps they need to include to be able to fill in the form. It also directs them to the page, which could be helpful.

Capture5.mp4 This video shows the college website from the homepage. It also shows some of the options for parents on the website and places where they can find out more information. The quality however is not the best.

No I wont be including this clip because the quality is not the best and it doesn’t really point out important parts of the website.

Capture6.mp4 This clip shows the same as above in capture5.mp4 but the quality is better and the mouse goes over some of the important links on the website. Also the quality is better than the one above.

Yes This clip could be used in the promo video if there was enough time at the end but I don’t think it is an essential part of the video. If I include too many website viewing the audience may get bored and may not wish to come to the college in September. Also because the quality is better it would be more appropriate than the one above.

MVI_1035.MOV This shot is a pan shot of students working. However the lighting is not right and the quality is poor as well.

No This piece of footage is not going to be included within my promo video because the quality is not great and it doesn’t show off the college.

MVI_1036.MOV There I over the shoulder shot of a students work. The quality of the clip is not great and you cannot see what the student is doing. And the camera is quite unsteady at times.

No The quality of this footage is not good enough to be used in my promo video also the control on the camera is not the best it could have been.

Corporate logo.mp4 This shows words coming onto the screen and collecting in the middle. These words are things that describe the college.

No I wont be using this clip in my promo video because the clip is only 3 seconds long and it wont be on screen long enough to read what it says. Also you don’t want lots of writing on the video because it will loose people’s attention.

Costa.mp4 This is a tilt shot of the costa sign. The quality is good and the pace Is fast. At the end it shows the costa coffee.

Yes I could use this clip because it shows the college has a costa and many other colleges in the areas may

making a coffee to showing what the set up of costa looks like. However the glass has a reflection of the top of the atrium.

No I wont be using this clip because since the footage was taken the menu has changed behind and the set up is different. This will give a false view of a college asset.

MVI_1044.MOV This shows a medium close up of a student working. The quality is not great and in the background of the action a student yawns.

No I wont be using this because of the quality. Also the student is chewing which goes against a college rule and it is not setting the best example of the college.

Lecture theatre.mp4 This shows an establishing shot of the lecture theatre. It also pans across to show the size of the theatre and what an amazing facility it is.

Yes I could use this because it will show new students and parents what excellent facilities the college has to offer.

Library 5.mp4 This shows a tilt shot of the sign out of the library. The quality of this shot is not bad.

Yes This could be useful in my promo video to show new students and parents there is places to study in a quiet environment.

Library 2.mp4 This is a two shot of students looking at the books the college has to offer.

No You can really only see the back of a students head so I don’t think clip is the best one to use to show the college library.

Library 3.mp4 This shows the two students again however they are in the side of the shot and you can see that the library has many books to help you. Also you can see the students looking in the books.

Yes This could be used because it can show student and parents the resources are there to help them through there study’s here.

Library 4.mp4 This is a lower angle than the previous ones but still shows a side shot of the students looking at the books.

No I could use this because it shows students looking in the books. And it also shows the college is tidy and clean.

MVI_1045.MOV This is a two, over the shoulder shot. It zooms in and out to show the students work and the students. The quality is not the best.

No I wont be using this clip because you can see the reflection of the students in the computer which means the lighting isn’t right.

MVI_1046.MOV This is a interview with a media student. It is quite a still shot.

No I wont be using this because the student didn’t look convincing and he stumbled on some words when explaining. This wont look good on the college so I don’t think it is appropriate.

No I could use this because it could surround the logo at the beginning and the end. This may make the video a little more interesting.

No The students don’t look like they like the subject. They are following strict questions and it wont make new students feel like the subject is enjoyable.

Yes This could be a short cut to show parents and students that support is there if they need it while they are attending the college.

Student help 5.mp4 This starts with a close up of the board then zooms out to reveal the year 12 and year 13 tutorial board and what you will be helped with whilst you are here at the college.

Yes I could use this because it can show parents what the college helps there children with and it shows students what they will get support with. However it may come across as too much information in one shot.

Yes I don’t think this is one of the most important parts that will show off the college they could find this out I they came to the college.

Yes I could use this because it shows that teachers are happy to help the students and the students are happy that the teachers can help.

Student help 4.mp4 This shows a teacher sporting a student with some sort of writing. It is an over the shoulder shot meaning you can see both the staff and student.

Yes This could be used to show the support is there for the students.

No I don’t think I could use this because the students don’t look confident enough and when they do they are quite informal and I think parents may be put off by this.

Yes I will use this clip as it shows the college logo and name. also the transitions are good which shows the college’s good use of technology.

No I wont be using this because a student has his phone out on the desk, which goes against a college rule.

If I was to do this again I would have filmed a few more shots myself because the vide footage was limited.
