2nd Grade Level II Reading Enrichment Unit 2 – Ramona Quimby, Age 8 Parent Summary Unit 1 Reading Targets I can describe characters, the plot and the setting in a story. I can describe the traits and roles of characters in a story. I can make text-self connections to the story. Level II enrichment is flexible in nature. The students who participate in level II math enrichment may change unit to unit, depending on their learning needs. Mrs. Friesen teaches Kindergarten level II reading enrichment. Last Tuesday, March 19, we finished the second unit of level II reading enrichment. The second unit was a novel study focused on a second book by Beverly Clearly, Ramona Quimby, Age 8. The main reading targets we focused on for this unit were traits of characters and the setting of a story. To better understand what physical traits and character traits are, the students created “me” bags and then shared physical and character traits of each other. The past two weeks, we transferred the understanding of character traits of each other to the characters in the book. Small groups of students worked collaboratively to describe the physical and character traits of a character in the book, Ramona Quimby, Age 8. They also found textual evidence for each character trait description. I have displayed their final small group products outside Ms. Abst’s classroom. I have included a photo of the display below. Our next unit will be a non-fiction unit. Our focus will be outer space and space exploration including rockets. Have a wonderful Spring Break!
