I’m not sure how to say it in English... It’s a pain.

Finn: You mean stomach-ache.Bella: Yes. Is this the right thing for a stomach-ache?Finn: Yes, it is.Bella: I also don’t understand what this means. Can

you help me?Finn: Let me see. Ah... Sunset yellow. It’s the colour

they use in the medicine.Bella: I see. Does this sign mean it is bad for you?Finn: It can be bad for some people. Are you allergic

to anything?Bella: No, I don’t think so.Finn: Then you’re probably OK.

2Ruby: Can I help you?Emma: Yes. I need some of that cream you put on your

skin. I don’t know what it’s called. It’s a special cream for keeping insects away.

Ruby: Do you mean insect repellent?Emma: I think so.Ruby: This one is very good.Emma: What does ‘light fragrance’ mean?Ruby: It means the lotion has a fragrance but it’s not

very strong. Here. (she opens it) Smell it.Emma: You called it a lotion. What’s the difference

between a lotion and a cream?Ruby: A cream is thicker than a lotion.Emma: OK. Thank you. I’ll take it.

UNIT 6 SELLING POWER

The Moving PictureBey_B1_U06_061_mov.flv

Girl 1: I get so stressed out when I go to the shops, you know, like I don’t know what to pick and then I go with my mum and she tries to try out stuff for me and pick it out and I don’t like it so I get really angry at her and then just it never ends up well when I go shopping so I absolutely hate it.

Boy 1: It’s not that bad, I mean it’s just, it’s just stressful. I just do it when I have to, you know. Just when I have to.

Girl 2: Yeah, I’m like that, like if I need something or I really want it I’ll take my mum shopping and she’ll get it for me and I’ll get really excited, but sometimes I’m just like just I need to get in and out now.

Girl 2: It’s just, it is stressed–Boy 1: Stressful.Boy 2: I just go in my free time, if I’ve got money I I’ll

go up there, I’ll, majority of my money that I get goes on clothes straight away.

Boy 1: Like I can’t do that, I can’t do that.Girl 2: Yeah, no, I spend it on clothes I just prefer to

shop online coz going into shops and–Girl 1: Yeah. Boy 1: Oh yeah, definitely.Girl 2: It is it is stressful and also if you shop online it

always has what you want.Boy 2: No, but when you shop online you have the

disadvantage of not being to know, not knowing how it feels on you, how it looks when you actually looking at it close up.

Girl 2: But then … but then when it comes you can get that and you don’t have to leave your house

Girl 2: I love like shopping in like vintage shops and like little sort of market stalls and stuff like that. I really … I don’t really like the big shops

Boy 2: No, I definitely have to go with the big places like …

Boy 1: Yeah, more variety.Boy 2: There’s there’s, yeah more variety and you get

to see different things you don’t have to keep going to loads of different shops for different things it’ll all be in the same place so …

Girl 1: It’s just you know when you think things are gonna look good and then they don’t so I have too much trouble with that all the time, so I don’t, that’s why I don’t like to go shopping coz I don’t like having to go through the process of, the process of you know buying something and it doesn’t look right and having to return it and then people you know not being very nice or helpful with you so I just try to avoid that so …

Boy 1: I can never find anything on the sales. Girl 1: No.Boy 1: l always go they don’t have my size. Boy 2: Yeah.Boy 1: I just can’t find anything.Girl 2: No … you don’t know where to look, that’s all

I’m saying.Boy 1: Thanks very much.Girl 2: Like, I go to sales and I’ll get things I’ve been

looking, I’ve been wanting for months and I’ll just be like right, it’s my size, ten pounds off, mine! Like, I know how to, I know how to do it, that’s why if you ever come shopping with me you’ll come with a good bargain.

Boy 2: Yeah but, I guess it’s easier for women women though, don’t you think?

Boy 1: Yeah, much easier.Girl 2: umm.Girl 1: No, I always, I always miss the sales. I mean,

I’m so set on not going shopping that whenever I do go out then people are always telling me you know go to the sales, and I’m like yeah, I’ve missed everything coz I’m stuck in my house you know online trying to find some stuff and …

Boy 2: Yeah.Girl 1: I go out and there’s no sales absolutely all of

them finished because I just hide away in my house coz I can’t be doing with that it’s too stressful for me.

Girl 1: It’s just a massive problem for me coz I couldn’t go with people to help me find sales because I hate that as well so either way it’s just a lose lose for me, I just, I can’t do sales.

Boy 2: I don’t see how you can hate shopping, it’s just like you can go out, buy so much stuff and then just put it all on your bed and just lay in it and think …

Boy 1: Erm, I often go shopping with my friends you know, but normally when we go shopping we go somewhere to eat as well so it’s not really just shopping, we go somewhere to eat, we just have a nice time … pick up girls, just have a nice time!

Boy 1: Yeah, I mean it gets a bit frustrating when you can’t find what you want.

Boy 2: Yeah.Girl 2: That’s that’s why I shop online a lot.Girl 1: Yeah.Girl 2: I do, like, they always have what you want, in

the size you want, in stock, delivery in 5 to 10 working days, you know … it’s a lot easier.

Girl 1: Yes, I definitely prefer online shopping to actually going out and buying it, I prefer it.

Rachel: Hello, this is Jenny and I’m Rachel. We’re editors and we work on Beyond. Today we’ve come to the design studio to meet some other people who are working hard to make Beyond look so great. Shall we go and have a look and see what they’re doing?

Sophie: Hi, I’m Sophie, one of the designers. One of the first jobs that happens in the studio is we take the manuscript, which is being written in a word process document, um, which is being sent to us by the publisher and then we import it into the page layout software that we use in the studio. We take the words and we start putting them in to character styles and we format them into pages as you can see here. It’s the very start of the process before any of the designers start designing it up.

Adam: Hi, my name’s Adam and I’m a graphic artist. I’m currently working on a spread for the Beyond series. Um, this is a piece of realia that needs to look like a magazine spread so I’m having to use my design skills to make the pages look more dynamic and interesting as possible. Um, it’s coming along quite well; I’m just about to finish this page and work on the next part of the book.

Amy: Hi, I’m Amy, I’m working on Beyond as well, and making the pages look really perfect ready to send over to Rachel, the editor and the publisher.

Jenny: Ah, great! The photographer’s here. Rachel: Excellent.Photographer: Hi, Jenny, I’ve got the contact sheets. Jenny: Fantastic! Thank you very much.Photographer: See ya.Jenny: This is great, we can have a look

through these now. Shall we go and show them to John?

Rachel: Yes, good idea.

Rachel: These are some of the photos of our drama kids, from B1, and this is John Park, who is the production manager here at the design studio, so we’re just going to be looking at these photos together to try and choose one for a particular page in the book. We’ve got quite a few actually, to select from. So what shape do we need?

John: Sort of, quite square.

Jenny: This one might be difficult to make into a square shape as they’re spread quite far apart.

Rachel: Mm-hm.John: Whereas these two are quite, quite good for

the …Rachel: The good thing about these is that you can

actually see that they’re all talking at the same time.

John: Quite nice, they’re closer up, and we, as you say, we can remove, remove this light; we’ll retouch that out.

Rachel: Brilliant. Ok, so shall we say that’s the one?Jenny: I think that’s the one. John: That’s it. Rachel: I think it’s looking absolutely great, what do

you think?Jenny: Yeah, I agree, I think the, err, they’ve

progressed really well and the design is coming along fabulously.

Rachel: Fantastic. Amy: Great.

UNIT 10 CHANGING FASHIONS

The Moving PictureBey_B1_U10_105_mov.flv

Roisin: Hi, I’m Roisin and I’m wearing a black hat that I got about a year ago and it’s really good coz you can wear it with everything and it’s so warm. I’ve got a grey, chunky-knit scarf that I layer with like, with everything and you can wrap it round loads to keep you warm, especially in this weather. I’ve just got like a really nice patterned check shirt from … I think I stole it off my mum, and it’s supposed to be worn to bed, but it’s really really warm and really comfy and I really like it. I’ve just got a cardigan on underneath because it’s really cold at the moment and a denim jacket that was about ten pounds from Brick Lane, which is really good because it’s supposed to be about eighty, and I’ve just added my own little collar tips on the end, and they screw on at the back, and I think it adds just a little something nice. I’ve just got a black skirt on with some knee-high socks and some nice trainers coz they’re comfy and you can go anywhere in them. Oh, and I’ve got just a couple of bracelets on: this one’s from Barcelona and this one’s just for a charity.

Shay: My name’s Shay, and, what I’m wearing er from the bottom is some brown boots here and they’ve lasted me like two years, which is amazing. And I’m wearing some leggings and they’re patterned and really bright and colourful, which I think goes nicely with the brown coz it’s, you know, very different, so yeah. I’m wearing er a scarf coz it’s freezing and I think it’s nice, it kinda goes with it; it’s kinda creamy, it’s nice and I’ve got a top that kinda matches with it because you know the patterns on here are kind of pink and colourful, so I think that goes nicely with it. Erm, I’ve got a big jacket that I got from the States and, er, it’s really cosy and really warm, so it’s great. And, er, I’ve got my leather bag here that I got a few weeks ago so I think that goes nicely with the outfit.

Sebastian: Hi, my name is Sebastian. I’m wearing, erm, my puffa jacket, probably one of my favourites – I like it, it keeps me nice and warm. Erm, my white shirt, I got it like two weeks ago in Oxford Street. My black jeans, probably my favourite jeans, they go with everything. Er, my canvas shoes, I bought them like a year ago, I’m thinking of getting new ones, but yeah, they’re nice. Erm, my beanie, got this like a week ago, yeah; it’s probably one of my favourites right now.

Tyler: Hi, I’m Tyler, wearing a padded jacket, really nice, like the style of it, keeps me warm during the winter. Wearing a white and blue striped t-shirt and light-wash jeans, these are my favourite coz I’m not really a dark sort of guy. Skinny and erm, blue canvas shoes. And my earring that I bought down the high road a couple weeks back.

Emma: Hi Max. You look good today! What a great T-shirt!

Max: Thanks. I got it on holiday. I chose it because it’s organic cotton.

Emma: Your hair looks nice as well. Have you had it cut?

Max: Yes I have. I’m glad you like it. You look great, too.

Emma: Thanks … So, are you going somewhere special?

Max: Erm, … You know, that dress really matches your eyes.

Emma: Max, who are you meeting? …

Leo: Thanks for helping me with this homework. You’re such a good friend.

Alice: Thanks, that’s the nicest thing I’ve heard for ages. You know I’m always happy to help.

Leo: I’m so bad at French that I’ll never be able to remember all the tenses.

Alice: But you’re good at other things. Your drawings are fantastic.

Leo: Thanks, that’s a really kind thing to say. But yes, they are pretty good!
