HEALTH AND ILLNESSoHealth is the state of physical and mental well-being.

oIllness is the opposite of healh.oSymptoms , like coughs, pain and fever, tell us that our body are ill.

HEALTHY HABITSo Sleep 8 or 9 hours every night .o Eat a balanced diet.o Eat five meals a day and always eat breakfast

.o Wash our hands before meals.o Breathe fresh air.

WHAT CAUSES AND ILLNESSTypes of illness:Non- infectious illnesses.Infectious illnesses: are caused by harmful

bacteria or viruses .They can be contagious or non- contagious.

BACTERIABacteria are unicellular micro-organisms.There are two types of bacteria:Beneficial bacteria .Harmful bacteria.

PATHOGENIC BACTERIABacteria meningitis :• Affected area : nervous system. Salmonellosis :• Affected area : digestive system. Bronchitis :• Affected area : bronchi in the respiratory

system.

VIRUSES A virus is not a micro-organism . It causes an

infectious illnesses . is not a living thing but it needs cells to carry

out its life processes.

PREVENTING AND TREATING INFECTIOUS ILLNESSES.Pathogenic micro-organisms can enter our

bodies in different ways:o Through the respiratory system.o Through the digestive system.o Through wounds and cuts.

HOW CAN PREVENT INFECTIOUS Disinfect wounds.Wash your hands before eating or handling

food.Wash uncooked food.Cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze.Do not share eating utensils.

VACCINESVaccines introduce into our bodies the micro-

organism or virus that is making us ill.The body reacts to the virus and produces

substances to destroy it.

HOW DO WE TREAT INFECTIONS

Infections caused by bacteria are treated with antibiotics.

Infections caused by fungi are treated with anti-fungal medicines.

Infections caused by viruses are only treated with medicines that help to reduce symptoms.
