Although traditional summer activities have been a little different this year, there is still so much to celebrate!

We are thrilled to announce that Elk Grove Village was voted “Best Town to Live In” in the Daily Herald 2020 Readers’ Choice Awards! The Village would like to thank everyone for their votes, our residents and businesses truly make Elk Grove Village the Exceptional Community. Check out page 1 for more information.

A large part of what makes Elk Grove Village the Exceptional Community is how we come together as a community during challenging times. We have seen an incredible amount of support from our residents over the past few months. We appreciate all of those who have reached out to our first responders with messages of encouragement and support. We have also seen a tremendous amount of positivity throughout our neighborhoods—whether it is a message in chalk on the sidewalk, a creative yard display or even a neighbor checking in on someone who may need an extra hand, these efforts are what make Elk Grove Village the Exceptional Community.

A recent major improvement to our community has been the completion of two bicycle/pedestrian connections into Busse Woods along Arlington Heights Road. These two new connections provide safe crossings at Oakton Street and Northwest Point Boulevard and will help create a safer and more inviting environment for bicyclists and pedestrians to access and enjoy the natural beauty of the Busse Woods Forest Preserve. Read more about these bicycle/pedestrian connections on page 5.

The summer weather calls for outdoor activities! Now that the State has moved into Phase 4, the Village is opening our Splash Pad at the Village Green! See page 8 for more information.

Throughout the past few months, we have been working to make the necessary updates and changes to events cancelled during the pandemic. Unfortunately, the decision has been made to cancel Oktoberfest and the Hometown Parade for 2020 as we continue to prioritize the health of our community. As scheduled for 2020, the Hometown Parade for 2021 will have the same “Your Favorite Things” theme and Community Character Coalition as Grand Marshall.

Another important change in schedule for Village events includes the Document Destruction & Electronics Recycling Event which was postponed to August 29. Page 6 has all the details you need to know for the upcoming event! If you have electronics ready to recycle now, consider dropping them off for free with minimal wait time at one of the recycling locations listed on page 6.

The Paint & Motor Oil Collection Event has also been postponed and is set to take place on September 12. Save the date information is on page 6. Additional event details will be posted as they become available.

Don’t forget to apply online for your mail-in-ballot! The Presidential General Election is on November 3, 2020. Apply online through the Cook County Clerk’s Office at www.cookcountyclerk.com. See page 4 for additional details.

Residents are always invited to share thoughts, concerns, or questions by clicking “Contact Us” on the Village website (www.elkgrove.org).

Prefer to share in person? Come to the next Coffee with the Board at Village Hall (901 Wellington) on Saturday, August 1. See page 5 for more details.

JULY 2020 ISSUE

Unique Sponsorship designates Elk Grove Village as “Official Dream Makers of USA Track & Field” Cont.Continued from page 1.

The Village received 12 entries from United States National Governing Bodies of the following sports: archery, artistic swimming, diving, fencing, judo, sailing, softball, track and field, triathlon, water polo, weightlifting and wrestling.

The Village worked with 4FRONT, a sports marketing consultancy, to evaluate the entries and identify the strongest contenders who could help the Village tell its economic development success story on an international stage.

4FRONT and Village officials evaluated the submissions based on the applicant’s ability to:

• Elevate awareness of Elk Grove Village and the Makers Wanted brand

• Reach business leaders and companies around the country

• Activate opportunities for community engagement in Elk Grove Village

• Offer visibility at major events

• Leverage local connections to the Elk Grove Village area

• Contend for medalist-level performances in Tokyo

This is not the first time Elk Grove Village has been a leader in developing innovative sports marketing partnerships as an economic development strategy. The Village was the title sponsor of the 2018 and 2019 Makers Wanted Bahamas Bowl games. That sponsorship established Elk Grove Village as the first non-tourism driven municipality to ever be the title sponsor of any college football bowl game. That two-year sponsorship helped the Village raise brand awareness of the Village’s industrial park and also attracted activity that will result in future jobs, economic development and tax revenue for the Village.

Elk Grove Village is home to the nation’s largest contiguous industrial park, a six-square mile expanse that is home to more than 5,600 businesses that employ 56,000 men and women and over 400 manufacturers that specialize in plastic, metal, food, tech and more

Elk Grove Youth Committee Awards College ScholarshipsSeven young citizens of Elk Grove Village were awarded with $1,000 scholarships towards their college education. The Elk Grove Youth Committee, in partnership with the Village of Elk Grove and the Elk Grove Parks Foundation, issued seven scholarship awards this year—five by the Village of Elk Grove and two by the Elk Grove Parks Foundation—to recognize High School Seniors for their outstanding leadership, community participation, and service within the community.

Elk Grove Village is able to offer three additional scholarship awards thanks to the generosity of Mikerphone Brewing, who donated proceeds from their 2018 craft beer festival to support youth scholarships in the community.

Congratulations to Robert Stanislowski and John Waity from Conant High School and David Gora, Sarah McNamara, Kaelyn Rittle, Ryan Steffens, and Thomas Youhn from Elk Grove High School. These graduating high school seniors are beginning their college studies in the Fall of 2020.

2020 Hometown Parade & Oktoberfest CancelledVillage officials announced the cancellation of the annual Hometown Parade and Oktoberfest celebration. The Hometown parade was originally scheduled for September 19, 2020 and Oktoberfest was scheduled to take place the same weekend on September 18-19. Due to ongoing concerns over large public gatherings during the coronavirus pandemic, both these events have been cancelled.

This year’s parade theme, “Your Favorite Things”, will remain the same for the Hometown Parade in 2021, with the Community Character Coalition serving as Grand Marshall.

JULY 2020 ISSUE

Village Celebrates Completion of Bicycle/Pedestrian ConnectionsOn Thursday, June 18, Elk Grove Village held a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the completion of two new bicycle/pedestrian connections into Busse Woods along Arlington Heights Road. Busse Woods is one of the most popular recreational destinations with more visitors every year than Yellowstone National Park, many of whom come through the Village of Elk Grove each year in order to access the trail. These two new connections provide safe crossings

at Oakton Street and Northwest Point Boulevard and will help create a safer and more inviting environment for bicyclists and pedestrians to access and enjoy the natural beauty of the Busse Woods Forest Preserve.

Both of these connections were identified in the Village’s Bike Plan, approved in 2015, as important to provide residents, area cyclists, and visitors with safe access to recreational paths at Busse Woods. For the past several years, the Village has worked with the Cook County Forest Preserve District on designing the best way to provide access to the existing trails with minimum disruption to the preserves.

As part of the State Capital Bill passed in 2019, State Representative Marty Moylan was able to assist the Village in securing the funding to complete these bicycle and pedestrian improvements. With assistance from Representative Moylan, the Village was able to secure a $425,000 grant from the Illinois Department of Commerce & Economic Opportunity (DCEO) in order to fund the design and construction of these new connections, for the benefit of both local residents and regional trail users.

Access to the Busse Woods trail at Northwest Point Boulevard and Arlington Heights Road was proposed by Topco Associates, as it is a popular lunchtime destination for workers in the Northwest Point Office Park. Previously, the intersection did not provide for pedestrian crossing, and individuals had to make their own way to the established path. The completed connection helps ensure that regular visitors have safe and convenient access to the trail.

Similarly, the crossing at Oakton Street breaks up what was previously a stretch of over a mile along Arlington Heights Road without a signalized crossing into Busse Woods for cyclists or pedestrians. This area is full of residential neighborhoods, who will now be able to use a safer and more convenient to access the popular Busse Woods. Additionally, this connection is part of a larger, east-west regional route that goes through Busse Woods, and will eventually connect to Busse Road and a planned bicycle/pedestrian underpass to cross I-90.

Sign Up for Construction Updates Online!Construction season is well underway in the Village. If you would like to stay up-to-date on construction projects in your neighborhood, please go to elkgrove.org/construction to sign up for weekly e-mail updates.

$100,000 grant will help the uninsured access substance abuse treatment via Elk Grove Village CaresElk Grove Village Cares has been awarded a $100,000 grant from the Illinois Criminal Justice Information Authority (ICJIA) that will allow the program to help uninsured individuals seeking substance abuse treatment get the help they need.

The bulk of the grant funds, which is officially in the amount of $101,459, will be used to support those seeking to access opioid addiction counseling and treatment, especially those whose insurance plans may not cover treatment or for individuals who have no insurance at all. Elk Grove Village Cares has been financially supporting uninsured participants since the program began in June of 2018. Grant funds have provided financial support for 44 uninsured individuals who entered into a treatment program through Elk Grove Village Cares participants into treatment.

This is the third ICJIA grant Elk Grove Village Cares has been awarded to support treatment services, for a total of $208,379 in grants through the ICJIA. The program has also been awarded two community grants totaling $5,000 from Walmart, as well as a federal grant totaling $1,540,000 to support regional education and opioid overdose prevention through Elk Grove Village Cares. In total, Elk Grove Village Cares has been awarded over $1.7 million in grant funding since the program was launched in 2018.

The grant will enable Elk Grove Village Cares to continue its partnerships with Gateway Foundation, Inc. and Leyden Family Services, Inc. to provide treatment services to anyone who comes to the Elk Grove Village Police Department seeking assistance.

Elk Grove Village Cares goals include reducing the number of opioid related deaths and overdoses in Elk Grove Village, providing more “points of entry” for people suffering from addiction and help them access the resources they need to begin the very difficult work of recovery, establishing and strengthening community-based resources for those in recovery and their family members and educating residents about the disease of addiction.

Under the initiative, anyone seeking treatment for their opioid addiction can seek it through the Elk Grove Village Police Department. Those seeking help will not face arrest. Rather, police officers and counselors will connect individuals to nearby treatment programs.

Elk Grove Village Police Department Public Notice- Accreditation Assessment Team Invites Public Comment

The Elk Grove Village Police Department is scheduled for a virtual site-based assessment as part of a voluntary program administered by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA) to achieve re-accreditation and to comply with state-of-the-art standards in four primary areas: policy and procedures, administration, operations, and support services.

As part of the assessment, agency employees and members of the community are invited to offer comments during a Public Information Forum that will be held sometime between August 10 - 13, 2020 to allow interested persons to speak directly with the CALEA assessors. Individuals can also provide comments to the assessment team by telephone, which is limited to 10 minutes, and must address the agency’s ability to comply with CALEA standards. The exact date, time, and location will be provided in the near future through multiple media outlets.

Individuals wishing to offer written comments about the Police Department’s ability to meet the standards for accreditation are requested to write: The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. 13575 Heathcote Blvd. Suite 320, Gainesville, Virginia, 20155-2215 or email [email protected]. Elk Grove Village Goes High Tech on Water System, Brings Robust New Technology to Support its MissionThe Village has launched a strategic partnership with Aquify, an Exelon company, to implement a modern, high tech solution for the Village’s water distribution system. Aquify has specifically designed a robust and responsive analytics and monitoring system for the Village’s water distribution system, which will include the installation of flow and pressure sensors into miles of underground water mains. These sensors will be used to identify and address maintenance needs and emerging issues. Currently, when a water main starts leaking, no one knows until it rises to the surface or escalates into a more serious problem. Leaking water seeps into the ground, while pressure gradually builds up in and around the pipe until it breaks. At that point, it’s disruptive and costly to repair.

The new system will be able to identify where and when an event occurs, so issues can be fixed or addressed proactively before they become a costly problem. Additionally, Aquify will monitor the Village’s water system and provide analytical expertise 24/7. In addition to identifying leaks and preventing main breaks, this high-tech solution will reduce costs, enhance sustainability, improve efficiency, advance security, and provide previously unavailable insight into the operational effectiveness of the Village’s drinking water distribution network. This new system is expected to be installed and operational in August 2020.

There’s still time to self-respond to the 2020 Census to avoid in-person follow up!In-person follow-ups for households that have not responded to the 2020 census are scheduled to begin early August. If a census taker visits your household, check to make sure they have a valid ID badge with their photograph, a U.S. Department of Commerce watermark, and an expiration date. They may also carry bags and other equipment with the Census Bureau logo. Based on the United States’ current self-response rate of 61.9%, approximately 56 million

addresses will get a visit from a census taker.

The best way to prevent a census taker from coming to your door is to respond on your own:

• Online at www.My2020Census.gov

• Phone at 844-330-2020

• Paper questionnaire (if received)

The Shop Elk Grove website (shop.elkgrove.org) also encourages residents to shop local and support businesses that are still open, albeit with limited hours, operations or product offerings. The Village aims to provide a resource for residents so they can shop and access services safely and conveniently.

The newest feature to the website is an interactive map that displays business locations, hours of operation, outdoor dining availability, and services (including delivery or curb-side pick-up) found throughout Elk Grove Village. Introducing Virtual Business Ambassador VisitsAs the Elk Grove business community works to recover and prepare for a post-coronavirus future, Village officials and staff are ready to answer questions, offer resources, and make helpful connections.

One new way we’re doing that is by going virtual with our popular Business Ambassador Program, which gives local business owners focused time to connect with Village officials and staff. Typically the Business Ambassador team visits business sites in person; but in keeping with social distancing, you can schedule a video call instead.

Introducing Virtual Business Ambassador Visits Cont.Continued from page 9.

Nick Radcliffe, the Village’s Senior Management Analyst for Economic Development, says the objective of a virtual visit is the same as an in-person one. Call participants include Village Trustees and Nick, along with Josh Grodzin, Elk Grove Village Director of Business Development and Marketing.

“We’re here to listen and learn. We want to meet the faces behind Elk Grove businesses,” Radcliffe says. “We really want to hear what they do and how things are going, especially after these past months. Once we know more, we can offer resources for workforce development, training, or business leadership, plus the permit process and incentives for expansion and renovation.”

Peter Jackson, Managing Partner at Miller Industrial, had a productive visit with the Business Ambassador team last year. “They made me feel welcome and proud that I’m leading a business based in Elk Grove Village,” Jackson says. “I gave them a tour of our facility with my three direct reports and led them through a strategy session, based on a presentation I prepared.”

During the visit, the Business Ambassador team encouraged Jackson to apply to Next Level Northwest, a not-for-profit business accelerator program founded by several Chicagoland municipalities - including Elk Grove Village.

“I was able to secure a spot in NLNW,” Jackson says. “I recently graduated from NLNW and had a super positive experience working with Coach Jeff Williams, who helped me put together a market research plan.”

The same helpful feedback and networking is possible with a virtual Business Ambassador visit. It’s easy to set up a call, and you don’t have to be new in town to participate. Here’s what you can expect:

• A 45-minute video call with Village Trustees and staff (up to five people total).

• A confidential discussion about your business — what you do, who your customers are, any goals and challenges, and what you currently do to grow your customer base.

• Questions to help identify the kinds of vendors, suppliers, service providers, and potential customers might be right within the Elk Grove industrial park.

• An overview of Village resources and partner organizations that may be especially helpful to your business.

Longtime Village Trustee Sam Lissner has participated in Business Ambassador Visits since June 2016. “Josh and Nick do an outstanding job reaching out to our businesses and as Elected Officials, we want to be part of that process,” he says. “The main reason I enjoy visiting our businesses is it provides an opportunity to express gratitude for their investment in Elk Grove. Companies have a choice where they can locate. We want to show them they made the right choice by choosing Elk Grove.”
