The number of donors to the university has increased from around 2000 to over 3500. Dr. Dockery is providing leadership for a major five year strategic plan called Union 2010: A Vision for Excellence. In 2004 Union successfully completed the Building a Future campaign by raising $63 million.

During his tenure the university has seen a strong increase in commitment to excellence in teaching and scholarship. The 2004-05 season looks to be one of great promise for the Lady Bulldogs of Union University. As always, the goal is the NAIA National Title and Coach Mark Campbell has added to his already strong returning class to make a run for the 2005 crown.

Union’s schedule this season is filled with numerous NAIA teams that find themselves in the NAIA National Tournament from year to year. Teams fitting that description on the 2004-05 schedule for the Lady Bulldogs include North Georgia, Univ. of Science and Arts, Vanguard, Oklahoma City, Houston Baptist, Campbellsville, and Brescia. Also included on that list are TranSouth Conference foes Freed-Hardeman and Trevecca Nazarene. Union will face many tough test from start to finish of the regular season schedule, but come national tournament time, Union will be well prepared for anyone standing in the way. One tournament to really test the Lady Bulldogs early will be the Jackson Rotary Classic on Nov. 18, 19, and 20th. Union will be facing NAIA Top 5 opponents Vanguard University (Calif.) and Oklahoma City University.

Leading this year’s team will be a group of four very talented seniors. Led by last season TranSouth Conference Player of the Year and first team NAIA All-American, Stephanie Clark (pictured right). She led the nation in field goal percentage and was second in rebounding and total double-doubles. Molly York returns as a great shooter at the forward position. Laura Mitchell (pictured below) returns after leading the Lady Bulldogs in three pointers made last season as a junior. And Monica Elliott returns to give experience and depth at the point guard position.

The junior class is made up of three players, two returning and one transfer. Jennifer Henson is returning after finished second behind Mitchell in three pointers made last season. Peggy McCain is back

to provide depth and leadership off the bench. Tiffany Fisher begins her much anticipated Union career after transferring in from MTSU. She will make immediate contributions at the guard position.

Four players make up the sophomore class for the Lady Bulldogs. Three of these players are transfers into the program while one player, Latorya Fuller, will red-shirt this season. Whitney Tate comes to Union from ETSU and Ena Daniels transfers in from Western Illinois. Both of these players will provide Union with early contributions at the guard position. Natanya Smith transfers to Union from Lee University where she was a TranSouth All-Freshman performer last season. She will complete a great one-two punch in the post with Clark.

Union boasts three super freshman on their roster. Crystal Eason, one of the top 5 scorers in Tennessee basketball history gives depth to the guard position. The 2003 and 2004 Class A Miss Basketball in Tennessee, Merideth Richardson joins Union’s dominating group of guards. Paola Ferrari comes to Union from Asuncion, Paraguay and will make immediate impact on this team with her size and strength at the point guard position.

Union is loaded and ready for that run at the NAIA National Title and to also regain something lost from last season, the TranSouth Tournament

Championship. Union has won eight of the past nine conference tournament championships, including seven of the eight TranSouth Tournament titles dating back to the 1996-97 season. Union has won nine straight conference regular season championships, including all eight TranSouth regular season titles.

NAIA - National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics

Throughout its history, the NAIA has provided strong leadership for all aspects of intercollegiate sports. Since its introduction of intercollegiate championship basketball in 1937, the NAIA has maintained the highest standards while administering first-rate athletics programs.

With its major emphasis on educational development, it was natural for the NAIA to strengthen academic eligibility requirements. All NAIA participating student-athletes must maintain a certain grade-point-average (GPA) while accumulating credit hours for a declared academic degree. Unlike other associations, NAIA student-athlete academic eligibility is monitored on a semester-by-semester basis.

The NAIA includes more than 60,000 participating student-athletes. The NAIA offers 24 separate championships in 13 sports including baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, football, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, volleyball, and wrestling. For more information on the NAIA, visit their web site at www.naia.org.

NAIA Champions of Character A Character Development Initiative

Mission StatementThe NAIA “Champions of Character” initiative will create an environment in which every NAIA student-athlete, coach, official and spectator is committed to the true spirit of competition through respect, integrity, responsibility, servant leadership, and sportsmanship.

Vision StatementWhen researching the NAIA’s place in the history of sport and higher education, several consistencies are apparent, including its dedication to academic achievement along with athletic excellence. Also apparent is the organization’s role as a trailblazer in providing equal opportunities for all student-athletes. Above all, there is an expectation of ethical behavior and a commitment to scholarship, sportsmanship and leadership.

Throughout its history, the NAIA and its members have used sport informally as a vehicle for character development. Because the athletic arena has become a microcosm of society, the time has come to bring a more formal emphasis to character development on every level and especially in sport. The NAIA “Champions of Character” initiative, through awareness, education and community involvement, will continue to develop an atmosphere of integrity in sport. Character and cooperation will grace our youth as they compete in athletics and life.

The 2003-04 season started just like every other season for the Union University Lady Bulldogs. High expectations where not in short supply. Union was returning two starters and had signed four division I transfers to complete the new roster. However, with three-time NAIA All-American and two-time TranSouth Conference Player of the Year, Jessica Henson went down with a career ending knee injury in the eighth game of the season, this team new that their leadership would have to come from someone new. That player was junior transfer Stephanie Clark. Clark led the team and conference in score and rebounding as she average a double-double (21.1 pts and 10.8 reb.) for the season. Union fed off Clark to glide through the rest of the season to finish 32-5 overall and 14-2 in the TranSouth. Union was named co-champions of the conference, however the Lady Bulldogs would lose the TranSouth Tourna-ment Championship for the first time since 1995. Their string of eight straight regular tournament championships was over.

Union entered the season as the No. 3 ranked team in the NAIA’s Preseason Polls. During the year, Union was ranked as high as No. 2 and as low at No. 6. Union finished the year ranked No. 6 in the final NAIA poll and earned one of the four No. 2 seeds in the NAIA National Tournament. Union cruised through the first three rounds of the tournament making it all the way to the Elite Eight where they would fall to the eventual national champions, South-ern Nazarene University.

During the season, Lady Bulldogs players earned numerous awards and passed career milestones. She also passed the 1,000-point mark for her career. Stephanie Clark was named the TranSouth Conference Player of the Year, a first team NAIA All-American, a UBCA Kodak All-American, and a member of the NAIA National Tournament All-Tournament team. Jennifer Henson and Christina Smith were named second team All-TranSouth performers. And Laura Davison was named an NAIA Scholar Athlete.

The strides made by young players and roles players to pick up the pieces after losing such a key player, it only improves the chances of even more success in 2004-05. They look to return to the top of the conference by them-selves in 2005.
