NUTRITIONFor those who need a dialysis treatment it is important to have a healthy and

balanced diet with an adequate quantity of selected nutrients.

The basic principle is to control the ingestion of liquids. It is important to take into

account that all food has water, such has soup, tea, barley coffee, fruit… so all should

be taken into account. You should drink in smaller sized cups or glasses or simply just

drink half a cup.

There is some specific special nutrition

care, some food that should be avoided

due to their high content of certain

substances such as potassium,

phosphorus or sodium (salt). Salty and

processed food should be avoided

(crisps, sauces, concentrated stock,

instant soups and processed meat such

as bacon or chorizo). The key is to cook

with little salt and use aromatic herbs

to season. In regards to potassium, food

that is rich in this mineral should be

avoided. Items like dry fruits and

oleaginous plants (raisins, dry figs,

cashew nuts, pistachio, peanuts…),

legumes (beans, chick peas, and lentils), chestnuts, persimmons, bananas. You should

know which food items are the “most dangerous” and with high potassium levels.

It is also important to use techniques to lower the potassium levels on vegetables

and potatoes (leave in water overnight and cook in two different takes of water).

As for phosphorous, you ought to avoid dairy products (especially cheese) entrails of

meet (liver, gizzard), dry fruits and legumes.

It is essential to have a protein based diet in which proteins of high biological value

are recommended (meat, fish), hence these are important for a good nutritional

balance. Egg whites are also a good source of protein with low phosphorous.

To increase your protein ingestion it is advised to eat up to 2 egg whites a day: boiled,

poached in soufflés or soups in salads or even in desserts like flan or meringue. Little

note, if you are diabetic, these desserts should be made with sweetener.

These nutritional habits should be a daily care, especially during the weekend when

the intervals between sessions of haemodialysis is bigger.

HUMANITARIAN AID

One of UNIEFRO’s code of conducts is performing humanitarian aid. In 2014, human aid

was directed to Africa through the NGO Filhas de Maria Auxiliadora – Salesianas.

This NGO was funded by St. John Bosco and provides support to disadvantaged

communities.

John Bosco was born in Becchi, a village in

Piedmont, northern Italy, on 16 August

1815. Early in his life he became an orphan

of his dad, his mom educated him and gave

him advice. They were very poor their early

life. After a dream aged nine, he realized

that his life was to be all dedicated to the

young people as a priest. He had to work in

various manual labours as a youngster, to

pay for tuition fees and in 1841 he was

ordained a priest. As a priest he enjoyed

good pastoral job offers. He renounced all

of them to devote his work to the boys who

came to the city of Turin looking for work.

Initially he started by bringing them

together into a courtyard where he

grabbed their attention through games

which the only purpose was "developing

good Christians and honest citizens". At the time of the industrial revolution many of

these boys were forced into work in despicable condition but Don Bosco, through

dialogue with employers, achieved that they would have labour contracts. He quickly

expanded his work and founded boarding schools and vocational schools.

EVENTSKIDNEY CONFERENCE 2015

15th to 18th of April | Centro de Congressos de Vilamoura

Organized by: Sociedade Portuguesa de Nefrologia

(Portuguese Nephrology Society)

In the courtyards he had catechism groups but also games and music as he said it was

necessary to like what young people like to welcome them and make them want to

communicate. He was a writer of sacred and profane books, all to help educate young

people. Ordered the

construction of churches,

particularly the Basilica of

Our Lady Help of

Christians in Turin. He

credited Her for all his

work and had unblemished

sign of Her protection.

Said Mary Help of

Christians did everything

in his life and work and

called for the constant

love of his Good Mother.

He found in his good employees and students, inspiration to create the first Silesian

Congregation in 1855. With other priests and collaborators working with youth, he

founded the Silesian Co-operators, the group he called "Silesian laity." With St. Maria

Mazzarello he founded the Silesian female branch: the Daughters of Mary Help of

Christians as a living monument of his gratitude to Our Lady. "
