GOOD GRAMMAR

TO YOU!

The EyesWhen it comes to healthy living, even little things count. Like eye health. Make sure you rest them well. They'll serve you a long time. The 20/20/20 Exercise for the eyes, for those who spend long hours looking at the computer screen:

1. After every 20 minutes of looking into the computer, turn your head and try to look at any object placed at least 20 feet away. This changes the focal length of your eyes, a 'must-do' for the tired eyes.

2. Try and blink your eyes 20 times in succession, to moisten them.3. Time permitting of course, walk 20 paces after every 20 minutes of sitting in one particular posture. This helps

blood circulation for the entire body.

When I wrote “Unilorin and the antics of enemies executives were “from other campuses around the South-of success” (Town & Gown, February 20, 2016 west, who wanted to impose on us, in a commando style, an Bulletin), some people thought that I was executive of an 11-member congress over and above the

But the abortive plot, penultimate c o n g r e g a t i o n o f 1 , 5 3 8 l e c t u re r s o f t h i s Wednesday (April 20, 2016), by some people, bent on University”(Emphasis mine, please!)plunging the University into chaos, was a practical Well, let me leave union matter to the unionists to manifestation of the extent to which the agents of resolve among themselves. The sole concern of Town & revisionism - those who are not happy at the well- Gown is the need for all members of the Unilorin acknowledged progress and giant strides being recorded community to continue to jealously guard the institution's daily by the University of Ilorin - could go. hard-earned better-by-far status. Like the Vice-Chancellor

In every material particular (apology to the legal said at a press briefing recently, “it is on record that the only minds), the mission of the invaders that day was clear: to university in Nigeria that has enjoyed a stable academic precipitate a crisis of unimaginable dimension in a campus calendar is the University of Ilorin and we will (must) not of undiluted harmony! And their tactics was unmistakably allow anything to threaten that stability”. In other words, we the commando style of invasion of a virgin land by a should resist all agents of revisionism whose game plan is to rampaging mercenary army of occupation! take Unilorin back to the proverbial Egypt!

But their plot fell flat on its face, as, contrary to their Good to know that parents and other stakeholders expectation, the University security personnel, ever so civil, are on the same page with the University management, staff allowed them to hold their so-called congress without any and students in this resolve to say NO to these enemies of harassment even though the invaders had earlier harassed a success. lecturer and his students out of the Amphitheatre venue of Dear readers, please permit me to reproduce some the sham congress. They did all they could to provoke the posts, on my facebook wall, by some concerned parents and University authorities with unguarded name-calling, yet the others who were alarmed at the incident of April 20, 2016:congress of 32, among whom were only about 11 Unilorin I have said it before and will lecturers, held without any ugly incident. And to complete repeat myself, the stakeholders will resist any attempt to the charade, the motley congress came up with a hurriedly disrupt the peaceful atmosphere at the University of Ilorin. assembled seven-man committee, unconscionably dubbed We stand by the authority of the University. Unilorin is a “the new authentic executive to run the Unilorin Branch of great brand in Nigeria. We are proud of the university.ASUU”. Not only is this laughable, it is also unheard of in I write as a concerned parent and urge democratic ethos for an 11-member faction of a trade union ASUU to allow the academic peace UNILORIN has enjoyed to claim superiority over the other group that is made up of over the years to endure. As The Guardian reporter in nearly 2000 members! Kwara State in the late 80s and early '90s, I am familiar with

I am not a politician, but I am well versed in the the UNILORIN 49 issues. But the leadership of the well-worn attribute of democratic politics, which is institution has succeeded in working together with all "government of the majority by the majority for the stakeholders to exorcise the ghost of academic instability. I majority" or simply, "government of the people by the will love that to continue for the sake of our children. Due to people for the people". Also, I am not a member of ASUU, the protracted academic disruption at Obafemi Awolowo but I know that it is an association of university lecturers by University, Ile-Ife, my son almost missed graduating and university lecturers and for university lecturers. And like all participating in National Youth Service Corps with his democratic associations, ASUU is guided by a set of sisters who gained admission into UNILORIN over a year democratic rules. And on this premise, it is safe to assume after he had been an undergraduate at OAU. It will be a sad that the Union thrives on the rule of the majority by the day if academic instability is allowed to return to majority for the majority. UNILORIN.

It is on the basis of this democratic grund norm that Unilorin must maintain the peaceful the charade of April 20, 2016 should confound even a rookie environment and shut its doors against external aggressors.in trade unionism. But like the democratically elected Need I say more? I will just add the illuminating words of Dr. Chairman of the Unilorin ASUU, Dr. Usman Raheem, said, Mahfouz Adedimeji, the workaholic Director of the Centre the plotters were not members of the University of Ilorin for Peace and Strategic Studies (CPSS) He wrote on my academic community. According to Dr. Raheem, who was facebook wall, “Unilorin will continue to celebrate while popularly elected in a properly conveyed congress of the they (the revisionists) will continue to agitate. We plan and 1,538 member-strong Unilorin ASUU on February 26, organise; they shout and agonise”. 2016, the people who claimed to have elected a new ASUU Ntoor!
