In his lecture, entitled"Economic Recession in Nigeria:Causes, Effects and Solutions fromShari'ah Perspective", the don said,“The reason why Nigeria ispersistently wallowing in the oceanof challenges occasioned byeconomic recession in recent times isbecause the country is at the mercy ofoil price at the global market”.
Dr. Alaro pointed out that the“inability of Nigerian leaders todiversify the economy, their apparentwasteful spending, and failure to goby the teachings of the Holy Quran asregards leadership role contributedsignificantly to the ongoingeconomic crisis in the country”.
The Guest Lecturer identifiedheavy reliance on a single commodityas the source of revenue, the spend-it-all attitude, corruption and fiscalirresponsibility as some of the majorcauses of the recession the nation'seconomy is currently going through.
Dr. Alaro buttressed hispoints with various verses from theHoly Quran, saying that one majorsolution to recession, particularly inthe way it has affected the Nigerianeconomy has been revealed in thenoble Quran more than a thousandyears ago.
Quoting several verses fromQur'an 12 and Qur'an 17 as well as the
Hadith of Prophet Muhammed, theGuest Speaker pointed out that Allahencouraged human beings todiversify their economy and warnedHis creatures to be prudent in themanagement of the resources at theirdisposal.
Dr. Alaro noted that thecurrent economic recession in thecountry was man-made and wouldcontinue unabated until men andwomen in the corridor of power inNigeria decide to be objective, Godfearing and meticulous in thehandling of the country's social, political and economic affairs.
He said, "Nigeria willcontinue to wallow in the ocean ofthis current recession except theleaders discard mono-culturaleconomic structure and fiscalirresponsibility", pointing out that“Nigerian leaders need to learn howto spend on what we need as a nationand not what we want”.
The Guest Speaker furthersaid that the inability of the leaders toidentify and address the country'sneeds is responsible for wastefulspending, corruption and socialdislocation in the society. Hecommended the Federal Governmentfor the introduction of the localcontent bill and other trade policiesthat emphasise the consumption of
Made-in-Nigeria goods." P r o d u c i n g w h a t w e
consume, and consuming what weproduce is critical to self- sustenanceand self-reliance", he said, stressingthat this is necessary “so as tocompletely remove ourselves fromthe shackles of foreign countries, which take advantage of ourleadership weaknesses to perpetuallyenslave and subjugate us as a nation”.
The legal luminary expresseddispleasure over Nigerians' appetitefor foreign materials, whichaccording to him, is very high, saying, “Unless we have a change ofattitude as a nation, realising ourgoals for economic growth anddevelopment will be a mirage”.
He, therefore, called foreffective collaboration betweenNigeria and developed countries inthe area of knowledge andtechnology transfer from foreignersto Nigerian youths so as to createmore jobs and equip the teemingyouths in various vocational skills.
I n h i s c o m m e n t , t h eChairman of the occasion, AlhajiTunde Abdulkareem, called on alland sundry to let the positive changebegin from them and unanimouslyjoin hands to pull the country out ofthis lingering economic recession.

It was a battle of wits as thecontroversy surrounding theissue of whether tertiary
institutions in the country should beallowed to conduct aptitude test forcandidates seeking admission wasagain brought to the fore at the finalsof the 2016/2017 Inter-Faculty Quizand Debate Competition lastWednesday (June 7, 2017) at theUniversityAuditorium.
Organised by the UnilorinQuiz and Debate Committee, headedby Dr Rotimi O. Arise, the Debatecompetition, themed “EmirateCombat” and patterned after theBritish style of parliamentarydebate, saw the emergence of TeamAjiboye comprising Sanni Ahmedand Sulaiman AbdulQuadri of theFaculty of Engineering andTechnology clinching the firstp o s i t i o n w h i l e Te a m A . S .AbdusSalam, represented byOlusan jo Moromoluwa andIgbinosa John of the Faculty of Artsand Team K.I. Adam, comprisingAdeyemo Ifedolapo and KalejaiyeMusa of the Faculty of Law,claiming the second and thirdpositions respectively.
Arguing in support of themotion that tertiary institutions beallowed to conduct aptitude test forcandidates seeking admission, thecontestants who were given just 15minutes to prepare and articulatetheir submissions, stressed that itwas important for institutions tohave a say in the candidates theyadmit as this would promote meritby ensuring that only the bestcandidates get admission into theuniversities, simplify admissionprocedures, save costs incurred inorganising examinations as well ascurb examination malpractices.
Marshalling their argumentsagainst the motion, the opposingcontestants, on their part, identifiedc o r r u p t i o n w i t h i n t e r t i a r yinstitutions, noting that students,
therefore, gain admission based onwhom they know. They maintainedfurther that universities are unable toconduct hitch-free exercises forcandidates seeking admission, saying, with the computerisation andthe adoption of security cameras inthe recent UTME examinations, there have been limited cases ofexamination malpractices.
In addition to this, they notedthat many tertiary institutions in thecountry do not have in place thenecessary infrastructure such ascomputers, to cater for the largenumbers of applicants seekingadmission. This, they noted, wouldalso pose an additional strain on thef i n a n c i a l r e s o u r c e s o f t h einstitutions that are currentlygrappling with the challenge ofsalary payment, leading to dividedattention and distraction on the partof the institutions.
Under the Quiz category, theFaculty of Clinical Sciences won thefirst position with 410 pointsdefeating the Faculty of LifeSciences, which scored 160 points tosecure the second position. TheFaculty of Basic Medical Sciencesclinched the third position.
Olusanjo Moromoluwa ofthe Faculty of Arts took the lead inthe Public Speaking category withthe first position; Oso Olasunkanmiof the Faculty of Communicationand Information Sciences clinchedthe second position and Ojo Samuelof the Faculty of Pharmacy took thethird position. All the students wereawarded prizes ranging from N7,500 each for first position, N6, 000each for the second position and N5,000 each for the third place.
The Chairman, UnilorinSports Council, Prof. U.B. Eke, whorepresented the Vice-Chancellor ofthe University, Prof. AbdulGaniyuAmbali, at the event, commendedthe efforts of the students. In aninterview with ,
Prof. Eke noted that the young leader ofthe 21st century “should be a roundlydeveloped individual not justsomebody who is a champion only inhis or her area of training.”
He said, “I have enjoyed thisevening. I have seen my students comeout and their level of interaction, theirlevel of involvement in what ishappening around them is veryencouraging. I was there when the topicof the debate was given out and within15 minutes, I am amazed at the level ofthe depth of knowledge that they haveshown. They have shown their abilityto promptly react to emergencies and soI am very pleased that they are not onlylearning skills that are relevant to theirvarious disciplines, they are alsoengaging in general knowledge andcurrent ideas that are ongoing in thecountry and even in the world at large.”
Prof. Eke said from what thestudents have demonstrated, “theyhave shown here today that they arebrilliant enough to be able to engagetheir peers from all over the world. Idon't imagine that a student comingfrom anywhere - else - Europe orAmerica or Asia - will do much betterthan how these students have donetoday. I am happy and I want toencourage them to continue to find timefor extra-curricular activities of thisnature…”
On his part, the Chairman of theUnilorin Quiz and Debate Committee, who is also the Head of the Departmentof Biochemistry, Dr Arise said that theinvolvement of the University indebate competitions within and outsidethe country has brought laurels andadded feathers to the dignity of theUniversity.
Dr.Arise noted that “Unilorin isthe best among champions when itcomes to debate and quiz challenges”.According to him, the Committee hasbeen concerned with cultivating andharvesting fresh talents every year inprepara t ion for na t iona l andinternational competitions.Unilorin Bulletin

Unionism in Nigeria is gradually turning into nauseatinggangsterism and platforms of venting senselessgrievances. The Academic Staff Union of Universities
(ASUU) ordinarily ought to be peopled by intellectuals or menand women of extreme candor.
In the past, ASUU was the voice and conscience of thenation. Each time they sneezed, government would catch cold. But all the reverence has dissipated in today's ASUU onaccount of some characters that populate it, especially a fewwho mount leadership positions in the union.
Sadly,ASUU must accept the reality of its plummetingnegative image in the eyes of Nigerians. Quite often, ASUUprojects itself as an association with no focus, insensitive torealities and lacks coherence. It has truly lost its nobility. It isnow famed more as a union which is either battling governmentfor increased welfare or individuals, particularly, ViceChancellors, who are their own colleagues, but elevated tocertain higher positions of authority.
When they are fatigued by work, they plot strike; theyspend more time plotting evil against their hard workingacademics and varsity administrators when they are appointedVice Chancellors. They defame them, even where there is noapparent reason.
They dust up obscure and irrelevant issues. Theyembellish it with the balm of relevance and seek desperateattention. Unionism is uppermost on their cards and academicwork or striving to achieve academic excellence is least on theirminds. It takes the back seat.
The Vice Chancellor (VC), University of Ilorin(Unilorin), Professor AbdulGaniyu Ambali is caught up in theweb of the decay that defines ASUU at the moment. It is eitherthe factional local chapter is throwing up misguided missiles athim or theASUU University of Ibadan chapter is propagating acampaign of calumny against him, laced in frivolousallegations. It is a shame that ASUU, a supposedly veneratedassociation is polarized; they cannot even provide effectivel e a d e r s h i p e v e n i n t h e i r s m a l l h o u s e .ASUU—Ibadan Zone chaired by Dr. Ade Adejumo and theASUU Unibadan local chapter chairman, Dr Deji Omole, arethe lilies in the union. They have found accomplices for thisunholy alliance in Unilorin in a factional leadership in theminority.
Since the episode of the sacked Unilorin 49 lecturers, these segments of ASUU have nursed an incurable grudgeagainst Unilorin as a university. But its 49 members werereinstated years ago by the Supreme Court. But for Unilorin tohave had the effrontery to challenge the audacity of ASUU, theunion does not only hate the university, but has continued tobattle every successive Vice Chancellor. They fruitlesslybattled Professor Is-haq Oloyede when he was Vice Chancellorand others before him.
In same spirit, Professor Ambali is trapped by thismeaningless vendetta between ASUU and the varsity. Hisrefusal to the request byASUU, Ibadan Zone, to bend the rulesto enable the ASUU factions in Unilorin reunite with thenational body has deepened the passions of hate. The legacy ofindustrial harmony on campus Ambali inherited and hassustained offends these isolated ASUU greatly. They want
Unilorin returned to the path of lawless strikes, as doneelsewhere. ButAmbali resisted it.
So, at every given opportunity they throw punches athim, citing imaginary reasons. For want of anything tangibleto hold against Ambali, ASUU-Ibadan Zone sometimesdabbles into the internal running of Unilorin; commenting onissues of internal discipline or faulting him for enthroning aserene and breezy atmosphere on campus for academic workto thrive.
Operating from this mindset, they have blindedthemselves to anything positive the VC has accomplished inthe varsity. While his impactful leadership resonates, elsewhere in Nigeria, the minority factional ASUU-Unilorinchaired by Dr. Kayode Afolayan and their soul mates inASUU- Ibadan zone see nothing good in it.
Yet, this is the same Professor Ambali who earned anational honour with the award of the Officer of the Order ofthe Niger (OON) by former President Goodluck EbeleJonathan for his outstanding and laudable achievements in theeducation sector, barely two and a half years as VC.
But had these disgruntledASUU chapters decoded thescenario around them properly, they would have discerned thatUnilorin has a tradition of academic excellence, whichAmbali, like his predecessors, has blocked ASUU fromadulterating. Imagine the factional ASUU-Unilorin,comprising academics requesting Ambali to lower the criteriafor promotion and his resistance to it sprouted fresh grounds ofmudslinging against the VC. That's the height of insanity.
When he was appointed VC, Professor Ambali'spublicized vision was to leave Unilorin a better university atthe end of his tenure. He has fulfilled this vision by allramifications'. But in blind fury,ASUU does not want to knowthat Professor Ambali has commissioned 60 projects since hebecame VC four and a half years ago. Another 17 others are inthe offing, including a power generation plant, which he haspartnered with a company from the United States for thevarsity.
ASUU hates to know that under Ambali, there is acordial relationship between the university management andall categories of Unilorin staff. His legacies are multiple. Themodified and alluring architectural landscape of the campus;steeped in campus peace; built or renovated offices; re-equipped laboratories; a 24-hour power supply on campusdaily; beautified sit-out joints for relaxation and priority tostaff training are comforts denied ASUU-Ibadan zone. So,they hate to see it elsewhere.
ASUU of whatever chapter should know that withAmbali's 652 megabytes, there is amazing internetcapacity/facilities on campus that connect both staff andstudents to the outside world for online researches andlearning. Students savour the pleasure of e-learning, as eachis given PC tablet and through it lectures, assignments andcurriculum are accessed online, which is a rarity in mostuniversity campuses in Nigeria.
