WHY FSSC 22000
WHY FSSC 22000 - BACKGROUND
• Until 2011 Unilever had no global requirement for external certification of its quality management systems or manufacturing sites.
• External certification was managed locally and driven by business needs
• Many Unilever sites held ISO 9001 certification and GFSI certification driven by customer needs • BRC, IFS, AIoB, YUM, AIB etc.
• Maintaining multiple certification standards is both costly and time
consuming
• There was an over riding need to simplify, standardise, manage certification in a co-ordinated way and ultimately improve quality and consumer safety performance
WHY FSSC 22000
• A feasibility study was carried out in 2010 comparing the Unilever Global Quality Standards to ISO9001, GFSI bench marked standards, ISO22000 and PAS220
• A pilot of FSSC 22000 at 4 pilot sites and was found to cover 76% of Unilever’s quality and consumer safety requirements
• Category Technology Good Manufacturing practice and quality management were not covered by FSSC22000
•FSSC 22000 was the certification scheme that was the best match with Unilever standards
Standard Requirements Number of Check points Unilever QMS & GMP 182
ISO 9001 47 BRCF/IFS 93
FSSC 22000 138
THE NEXT STEPS
• On the basis of the pilot it was agreed to adopt FSSC22000 as Unilever single global external certification standard for all of its 147 Foods manufacturing sites globally
• The project was driven by Group Quality – Unilever’s global Expertise Capability Team
• A certification body partner was selected by global tender
• The team developed a training program, rules of engagement, Gap Analysis Tool and time plan • Redesigned HACCP template & tool kit to cover all requirements of FSSC22000
IMPLEMENTATION
• Global communications packages were designed and delivered by live meeting
• Stake holders • Practitioners at site level • Regional Quality teams
• The project plan was co-ordinated by lead Group quality contacts in each region working with the CB
• The implementation time plan predicted a 2 year deployment program to certify all 147 Foods sites – 2012 to end 2014
IMPLEMENTATION
