WriteOn – State wide writing competition
Congratulations to Eva McKerrow in 5CB for achieving a Bronze Award.
Bronze, Silver and Gold Award winners will have their work published early next year. Can’t wait to buy a copy for our school. It’s a publication from the NSW Education Standards Authority.
P&C Agenda Items
Please send in any agenda items to the office for the next P&C Meeting to be held on Tuesday 18 September at 6.30pm. We will pass onto the P&C executive.
Parent Teacher Conferences
We will be hosting Parent Teacher Conferences in the first three weeks of Term 4. Bookings for parent teacher conferences can be made online via the Sentral Parent Portal and will open on Monday 10 September. Bookings will close on Sunday 14 October to allow teachers to prepare for conferences. Login to the portal via the link:
https://web1.lakecathie-p.schools.nsw.edu.au/portal/login
Please contact the school office if you require assistance with the interview booking process. As always if you would like to book an appointment to see your child’s teacher please call through the office. Before school “drop-ins” can be a bit hard as teachers are preparing for the days classes.
Bike Riding to School
Currently, we discourage riding to school as the only route available is along Ocean Drive. Hopefully over time and the development of the new estates, footpaths may be available for some children to ride to school. Please support us in this decision.
Bus and Bus Stop Safety
We are being made aware, more and more, about bus stops without any parent supervision. Whilst the development of independence is a good thing, we are receiving reports of students playing next to or even on Ocean Drive and other streets both in the mornings and afternoons. Student safety at bus stops is a responsibility of parents. Bus supervision is a responsibility of the bus company and the Department of Transport. The school will, of course, support in both these areas but please review the safety of your child at bus stops and whilst on the buses.
Mobile Phones at School
Our School policy regarding mobile phones at school requires phones to be signed in at the office before school and signed out at the end of the school day. We have had student phones ringing in class which causes huge disruptions and questions of fairness from students doing the right thing. Apart from significant safety concerns for students after school, it puzzles me why students really need a phone at all at this age. Parents should not feel pressured by their children to have a phone “because all of the other kids have one”. Feel free to discuss this matter with me if you disagree.
Relieving Principal – Johns River Public School
Mrs Robyn Bishop, one of our Assistant Principals, has been relieving as the Principal at Johns River Public School this term. This is a wonderful leadership position that she is experiencing and from several accounts including our Director of Schools, she is doing an amazing job. We should see her return at the beginning of Term 4.
Thank you
A huge thank you to my amazing staff for their continued professionalism running the school in my absence for three weeks. A successful spine operation sees me fighting fit and back on deck at school.
External Validation
Each school is required to be validated against the Schools Excellence Framework every five years. Lake Cathie Public School is having our turn very soon. All staff, especially our executive team are working on preparing this large scale presentation ready for when the validation team visits on November 6. Approximately 100 annotated pieces of evidence will be submitted as part of the Validation of our school. During some of this time, teachers are being replaced by our quality casual staff who follow the existing teaching program to ensure the best continuity of learning for our students. We certainly have a big staff at the moment and it’s nice to welcome new members to our team.

We look forward to this unique experience and the chance to explore our school grounds, problem solve and enhance our position/mapping skills.
Showcase rehearsals
There are many ways to keep fit and healthy and one of those ways is DANCING!!! All of our K-6 classes have been moving, singing and playing to the beat of their songs in preparation for their Glasshouse Performances next week. The excitement is building as the kids are polishing their items for the big day.

Non-Teaching Staff School Introduction Training Days
The Department of Education is seeking people who are interested in commencing work within public schools in your area.
The School Administrative and Support (SAS) Staff Reference Group welcome any people looking to start work in school administration to enrol in our Non- Teaching Staff School Introduction training programs.
The aim of this training is to provide participants with an overview of school administrative roles. Participation in these introduction days are not a guarantee of employment with the Department of Education. Participants are required to obtain a Working with Children Check (WWCC) clearance for paid work at their own cost. https://www.kidsguardian.nsw.gov.au/child-safe- organisations/working-with-children-check . Payment is then made through Service NSW prior to attending day one. To enable processing for potential employment partic-ipants are required to bring necessary completed forms, which appear on the MyPL registration page. Many schools have a policy of not employing current parents or associates within their own school.
It would be desirable if participants had a sound knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite. The training days will be held in the following locations:Goonellabah office – Wednesday 17 October & Friday 9 November 2018Tweed Heads South Public School – Wednesday 24 October & Tuesday 13 November 2018 Maclean Public School – Wednesday 24 October & Tuesday 13 November 2018William Bayldon Public School – Wednesday 24 October & Tuesday 13 November 2018 Frederickton Public School – Friday 26 October & Friday 9 November 2018Port Macquarie Library – Thursday 25 October & Wednesday 7 November 2018 Forster office – Monday 22 October 2018 & Tuesday 6 November 2018
To secure a place in this course, participants will need to register online as a community member on MyPL. Go to the following site https://mypl.education.nsw.gov.au/ and select Register. After completing the details, an email will be sent with instructions on how to get started and select the venue you wish to attend. The course codes are Day 1: NR22842, Day 2: NR22844.
There will be no cost to the participant other than them acquiring their WWCC prior to attending the training. Tea and coffee will be available throughout the day. Participants are to provide their own morning tea and lunch.
