Welcome to the 30th edition of the Rixton-with-Glazebrook’s ‘in the know’ newsletter produced by the Hamilton Davies Trust (HDT). The newsletter has been going for 10 years now and I would like to thank HDT for continuing to support this much valued form of communication to residents and facility users - keeping the Parish linked and informed. A big thank you also to the kind volunteers who willingly and cheerfully distribute a copy to your door 3 times a year - many having helped since the first edition in 2007. Your Community Shop is doing well but needs your support - to find out how see p.3. Also one of our key facilities - the Community Hall needs your input - see p.4. For community events taking place see pages 14-17 for dates and times. For further information about facilities, groups and their events visit: rixtonwithglazebrook.net

NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Despite Hollins Green Community Shop increasing in popularity and establishing itself as a hub in the heart of the community, it still needs to increase its sales! It is vital that we show our support in order for the shop to reach the level of sales it needs to help it be sustainable and to allow for its future development and for unforeseen repairs and replacements. So, why not pop in and see what it has to offer. In order to help the shop reach its fundraising target, a fundraising event has been organised at The Community Hall, Hollins Green on Friday 11th November at 7:30pm. Local award winning DJ and male vocalist Simon Roscoe will be performing tracks and hosting what guarantees to be a fantastic evening. Tickets are on sale at the shop at £10 per person (strictly over 18’s) which includes a hot supper, provided by The Black Swan. There are also some amazing prizes, to be auctioned on the night. So why not get together with friends, the community, and all the staff and volunteers at the village shop for a boogie, bite and beverage - the more the merrier! Your support as always is very much appreciated and all proceeds will go to the sustainability of your local shop. Stuck for ideas for Christmas presents? Then don’t be. Following the success of the shop’s Christmas Hampers last year, they will again be offering a bespoke service. Customers can choose from any of the gorgeous Christmas products on sale in the shop, which best suit their family member or friend. For a small charge, the chosen goods will be put together to create a beautifully decorated bespoke festive hamper. Spend as little or as much as you like - feel free to pop in to browse their fantastic selection.More volunteers needed - if interested, please call into the shop to leave your details or phone 0161 775 7022. See p.18 for address/opening times. After positive feedback from the last carnival, the aim is to hold the next Rixton-with-Glazebrook Carnival on Saturday 24th June in beautiful weather conditions! The first group meeting for Carnival 2017 will be held Tuesday 8th November 8pm at the Scout Centre, Hollinfare Village Green. Anyone wishing to get involved in helping to plan, organise and run the event should try and go along to the meeting. If interested, please contact Neil Fairfax on 0161 777 6957 or at [email protected]

NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

In the next couple of months there will be a survey dropping through your letter box asking for your opinion on our Parish Community Hall. The Hall was built in 1972 and has gone from being a hub of activity to, more recently, an under-used resource. Due to its current condition and high maintenance cost, there have been discussions about refurbishing, altering or rebuilding the Hall. The Community Hall Management Committee, as part of their considerations towards planning for the Hall’s future, wish to know your views. Please take time to complete and return the survey when it pops through your door.

Glazebrook Residents’ Action Group invite Parish residents of all ages to join them at their annual ‘Carols on the Green’- see p.16 for details. The Group wish to thank all who volunteer their time to this event and The Black Swan for donating a marquee - ensuring the carols can go ahead whatever the weather!

Following the backing of the Parish Council the ‘Shine the Light’ project has moved forward. Plans have been drawn up and submitted to Warrington Borough Council for planning permission to install 4 ground level lights in the road around the Cenotaph edging stones in order to gently uplight the war memorial.

Rixton Methodist Church extends a warm welcome to Stephen Froggatt who has taken over as Reverend from Jackie Bellfield. The Parish wishes Jackie all the best in her new appointment on the Wirral.

The local bus service Rural Rider has recently made changes to their timetable. To view the revised times and stops please visit our community website rixtonwithglazebrook.net If you wish to find out more about the service itself contact details are on p.19.Having added splashes of floral colour to Irlam and Cadishead as part of their ‘In Bloom’ project, The Rotary Club of Irlam have now turned their attention to the festive season and their Santa float tours of the district. See p.15 for dates and times and p.9 for Rotary contacts.

Glazebrook Post Office now has Christmas cards, bags and 2017 diaries and calenders on sale - with profits from all sales once again going to Clatterbridge Hospital Cancer Centre on the Wirral.

ACHIEVEMENTS, HIGHLIGHTS, SUCCESSES

Many congratulations to Hollins Green Cubs who have gained the highest award in Cubs - the Chief Scout’s Silver Award. A lot of hard work and commitment was put in to achieving all their challenge badges and many activity badges and this was rewarded by receiving their certificate from the County Commissioner for Cubs. The thirty boys and girls who make up the Cubs pack have enjoyed a hectic year celebrating 100 years of Scouting. Following a day at Blackpool Pleasure Beach with the North West Region, they enjoyed a memorable weekend’s camping and games at Capesthorne Hall with over a thousand Cubs from all over Cheshire. The climbing walls of the North West Face in Warrington and paddling on kayaks at Grappenhall provided further exciting challenges as did their weekend’s camp at Waddecar in June where they tried shooting, indoor bouldering, raft building and canoeing. Cubs have recently returned from Linnet Clough Camp near Stockport where they braved the Cavebus and The Cube, which wasn’t easy! Three teams took part in the District Survival competition in October where they engaged their fire-lighting, cooking and shelter building skills. The year continues with a Cub 100 campfire in November and finishes with a very special birthday celebration at LA Bowl, The Jungle and Jump Nation when Cubs will renew their promise. Our huge thanks go to all the volunteer leaders and young leaders and especially to Anja who has helped our Cubs pack grow from strength to strength. Anja steps down as Cub Leader and we wish her well in her new adventures. For contact details for Beavers, Cubs and Scouts see p.10.

The hundreds of Harvest Festival gifts, kindly given to St. Helen’s Church were donated to the Homeless Centre in Warrington run by the Salvation Army. The church’s new altar cloth, donated by Cliff and Doreen Herridge, was dedicated by Rev. John Macaulay along with new altar linen donated by the Friends of St. Helen’s Church. The Friends continue to host various talks and musical evenings and enjoy an annual trip together, this year to Llandudno. They are looking forward to their Christmas event on 8th December. St. Helen’s Sunday School attendences continue to rise and, due to demand, lessons continued throughout the Summer for the first time ever.

ACHIEVEMENTS, HIGHLIGHTS, SUCCESSES

Rixton-with-Glazebrook Pre-school children are enjoying gathering and chatting on their new outdoor decking, picnic bench and beanbags. In July there was not a dry eye in the house as children performed songs and dances followed by a leaver’s presentation that looked back at their time at Pre-school. The staff wish them all the best for the future. To find out more about Pre-school places - see p.10 for contact details.

St. Helen’s Primary School staff were very proud of their pupils at the end of term performances as Key Stage 2 children entertained audiences with their play ‘School Days - the best days of our life’, and Year 6 led a moving and meaningful church service in which they shared their memories and hopes and dreams for the future. The staff wish the school leavers every future happinesss and success. School continue to offer a range of after school activities including Choir on Mondays; Ethos Groups on Tuesday; Fusion Dance Classes (see p.10) and Contact Rugby for Years 3-6. Recently some Key Stage 2 children took part in Fencing classes before school on Tuesday mornings which were very popular, even though it meant an early 8am start! Children in Y5 received Bike Ability training recently to learn how to be safe on the road. Football and sports coaching sessions continue thanks to the generous funding from the Hamilton Davies Trust (HDT). In the autumn term HDT also helped school organise a litter pick and a Drugs Awareness talk - see p. 7. School have recently signed up to Twitter – you can follow them on St Helen’s C.E. PS @sthelensCEPS To find out more about the various school activities visit: www.hollins-green.eschools.co.ukMembers of Hollins Green Sequence Dancing classes spent an enjoyable weekend in Llandudno and are looking forward to their forthcoming dancing break in St. Annes in February 2017.

Over 40 Friends of Hollinfare Cemetery volunteers enjoyed an evening get together at Boysnope Golf Club in October. The Friends group has now been operating for six years, during which time many friendships have been formed. Due to ongoing improvements, the cemetery received the Green Flag Award for the fourth year running.

ACHIEVEMENTS, HIGHLIGHTS, SUCCESSES

Hamilton Davies Trust (HDT) aims to provide continued and enhanced charitable support to Irlam, Cadishead and Rixton-with-Glazebrook. Community groups are encouraged to apply to HDT for help - phone 0161 222 4003 or email [email protected] To download a grant application form visit hamiltondavies.org.ukGrant applications are considered bi-monthly - the next Trustees meeting will be held 30th November.

At the May 2016 Trustees meeting HDT awarded match funding of £15,000 to St. Helen’s School to enable them to extend the classroom used by Rixton-with-Glazebrook Pre-school, due to the popularity and demand for full-day sessions. Also, following the very positive feedback received last year, HDT funded Peter Dwan to provide drugs education again this year to class 5 pupils. Head Teacher Christine Smith said:“The drugs talk was very age appropriate and delivered such an important message.” Community groups have also benefitted from HDT’s support with printing and publicity for their Summer and Autumn fundraising events and activities and the continued promotion of their news and events via the ‘in the know’ and the community websiterixtonwithglazebrook.net

In October HDT hosted their third Volunteer Thank You event to show their appreciation for the generosity of local residents who take time to give something back, in support of HDT, to the community in which they live. A good night was had by all.

Residents and visitors to the district can once again enjoy the many Christmas lights that brighten the Parish during the festive season. HDT are busily maintaining, repairing and replacing connections and tree lights to hopefully ensure the Parish is well and truly lit up!

Throughout 2016 the iTea & Biscuits courses have benefitted many learners and will continue to do so into the New Year. These popular sessions support local residents in learning about the wonderful world of online, helping them to improve their IT and digital skills and understanding of social media. The next 8 week course commences Thursday 19th January 2017. To book a place contact David Taylor on 0161 222 4003 or [email protected]

Look of the Parish Action GroupPlanters around the Parish have added Summer colour thanks to the group’s volunteers who have been pruning, watering, planting and maintaining these. Litter is an ongoing problem, but is much improved thanks to the regular Parish Litter Picks. The next one is Saturday 11th February, meeting at the Black Swan at 10am - see p.17 for details. More hands are needed so please support this if you can. The group continues to help address dog fouling by providing doggy bags - see p.20 for how to report incidents of dog fouling.

Getting Around Action GroupFollowing a request by the Group, a recent traffic survey was carried out on Glazebrook Lane which highlighted a substantial number of vehicles travelling over and above the police enforcement speeds. The outcome is that 9 new 30mph camera signs will be erected from the A57 traffic lights all through the village to Woolden Road. As a result of the survey the Police are also looking at specific places and times to locate mobile radar cameras along the lane. On the cycling front, the Group continue to attend East Neighbourhood Meetings to push for proposed cycle routes along the A57.

Recreation & Leisure Action GroupA guided ‘Winter Walk’ within the Parish is being organised by the Group for Sunday 8th January - see p.16 or details. Everyone most welcome.

Social and Community Action GroupThe Parish Plan Group could use the IT skills of a young volunteer to assist with social media and group mail shots. If you are interested in lending a hand and want some volunteering experience to add to your CV, please get in touch - contacts below.

Next meeting - Wednesday 15th February 7.30pm, Glazebrook MethodistParish Plan Chair - Pete Higson - [email protected]

WARRINGTON BOROUGH COUNCILLORS (WBC) updates“With massive budget cuts from government it is proving more and more difficult to deliver the services to the Parish, though we are doing the best we can and endeavouring to keep on top of grass cutting. Enforcement officers are looking into the Gun Club on Prospect Lane, Rixton due to reports of shooting out of hours. Costs for the government’s proposed HS2 link continue to spiral and we continue to campaign vigorously to get government to rethink the Golborne Spur.
