SPECIFIC PROGRAM M E U NDERGROU ND G A S STORAGE

Why the UGS Course? The UGS course has been developed to help participants stay on top of the latest storage-related developments in gas industry and make the most of the UGS business. It offers a comprehensive overview of new technologies, developments, challenges and opportunities related to UGS. This course will take the participants on a virtual ‘tour’ from the gas reservoir or salt cavern, through surface facilities, via the trading place to customers in the market.

More specifically...The UGS course is distinctive combination of insightful lectures, interactive discussions, practical assignments and a case study. During this course participants are given the opportunity to expand their understanding of technical, commercial and legal aspects of natural gas storage, applying this knowledge in practice during exercises and the case study. A mong other issues, the course addresses how to develop and operate gas storage facilities in the best possible way and how to successfully incorporate such facilities as f lexibility mechanisms in existing and future gas markets.

Gas storage plays an indispensable role in the gas industry, balancing supply and demand of natural gas. Traditionally, gas was stored during the summer season and the entire volume was withdrawn in the winter for both peak demand and as a partial substitute for long-haul pipeline capacity. However, gas market liberalization has changed these practices, bringing additional commercial elements and new opportunities. Together with technological developments in subsurface and surface UGS facilities, these changes have considerably increased the value of gas storage in the gas industry.

Furthermore, the course provides an opportunity to visit one of the largest UGS schemes in northwestern Europe, giving participants the chance to be a part of daily UGS operations and to exchange experiences with the site managers and operators.

Your profile The UGS course is intended for professionals in energ y business who would like to enhance their knowledge on the performance of UGS facilities and the positioning of UGS in the gas value chain. This includes a wide range of professionals such as:• Commercialand/orfinancialmanagers• Projectdevelopers• Gasproducersandbuyers• Gastradingandpricinganalysts• Businessdevelopmentmanagers• Reservoir,processandproductionengineers• Consultants,R&D• Legaladvisors• Strategists,planners,analystsandmore.

“In the oil and gas world, underground gas storage shows the highest degree of interaction between technology and commerce. EDI set out to develop a course that reflects this. I believe that the best way of learning is doing things yourself, so we incorporated a good number of practical exercises in the schedule. The case study has proven to be very effective as well. When I meet participants later, on different occasions, I regularly hear: “Best course I ever attended” or “I should have attended it sooner because now I actually understand what my engineers are talking about”.

“…learning by doing - that’s what we practice in this course…”

The programme structureThe 5-day UGS course is consisting of a comprehensive e-learning module, lectures, discussions, dialogues, practical assignments (including a case study) and a site visit.

Practical assignments given during this course have two main focuses:• ThetechnicalandplanningaspectsofUGS;

and • Commercialmarket-relatedtopicsandissues,

i .e. regulatory regimes, tariffs, valuation.

The case study covers the main elements of the learning material presented during the course and is designed for practical implementation of the newly obtained knowledge. The case is concluded with a presentation for a forum of experts from the gas industry.

“We had a very mixed group in our class. What I appreciated best of all was the interaction between the participants, the open exchange of knowledge and information, particularly during the case study and outside classes. To me, the people I met at the course still are very valuable contacts. This exchanges really added to my professional knowledge.”
